VGC Repairs

Unlocking a Macronix (Vendor ID: C2)

The following tutorial will take you through the process of unlocking a Macronix chipset for Liteoon DG 16D4S. Remember it is important to stay update to date on all Lizard software, especially the Gecko Firmware. With most Gecko releases there is almost always a new Lizard Toolbox as well. Stay up to date on all releases including C4Eva's LT Firmware by visiting www.360Lizard.com or joining us in IRC #MaximusLizard on EFNet. The 360Lizard website has a built in IRC client on the Help/Forum tab for convenience. Requirements: Maximus Lizard Maximus Trident Phillips Screwdrivers USB Cable (Supplied with Maximus Lizard) SATA Cable (Supplied with Maximus Lizard) CURRENT Lizard Firmware Update (Gecko 1.16) CURRENT Maximus Toolbox v1.0.31 MAXIMUS LIZARD USB Windows Drivers Windows XP / Vista / 7 32bit or 64bit MAC OSX (Using Parallels, Bootcamp or VMWare)

Setting Up

Before you connect everything you first need to install the Maximus Lizard Drivers. These are signed and work in Windows XP / Vista / 7 both 32bit and 64bit. The drivers should autoinstall in Windows 7 and Windows Vista. 1. Plug you Lizard into the PC by the provided USB cable

2. Check what Gecko release your Lizard has by either the welcome screen on the Lizard or "Get Device Details" in the Toolbox(Toolbox 1.0.30 and up will inform you when there is an update to your Lizard)

WARNING !!

GECKO FIRMWARE 1.16 IS REQUIRED, IF YOU DO NOT HAVE 1.16 STOP AND UPDATE YOUR LIZARD BEFORE YOU PROCEED!!

3. Make sure your Drive is a Macronix, to find this info MTK your drive using the SLiteon MTK on Lizard.

Vendor ID : EF BAD

Vendor ID: C2 Good

4. Once you have confirmed you have a C2 (Macronix) Drive go ahead and do a "Read Key from Slim Drive". Either to PC or Lizard (refer to Slim manual if you're not familiar with this step)

5. Eject the Tray and go ahead and disconnect the Lizard and your drive power, Lets disassemble the drive. (Leave tray ejected) a. Remove the 4 screws from the bottom of the Drive

4 Screws

b. Gently peel back the Foam behind Disc Tray (or slice the foam where drive seperates)

c. Lift the bottom cover off.

d. Remove the one screw

e. Disconnect all 3 ribbons

Pull Outward

GENTLY Lift

f. Lift the Board out and fold over (you DO NOT need to remove the 5 wires)

Push back and GENTLY lift board

g. Ensure to isolate the Board from any metal drive parts, such as a piece of foam (if you own a Vampire use that foam), antistatic pad or folded up paper/cardboard.

h. Clean the area that has to be cut

i. Scrap the 3.3v and GND via holes

Scrape GENTLY to expose copper, the via's can be very fragile, use a hobby knife and do not press hard.

6. Connect the Lizard and Drive Power Source back up (ex.. Maximus Xtractor 3)

7. On Lizard go to the UNLOCK/LOCK in the SLiteon Section.

12. Press Downward on the Trident and the Pulse LED (RED) will light up for a second and then the GREEN LED will light up once again.

13. Lizard screen should display a CHECK Mark with the word SPI UNLOCK SUCCESS !

IMPORTANT !!

If you probe the trident and it still keeps flashing STAGE 1... you will need to adjust the OHM value on the Trident. The installed trimmer is 0 to 100 Ohms; the default setting is approx. 15 to 25 ohms and should work for majority of drives. The best results have been in the 10 to 20 ohm area.

Turn Clockwise to lower

Using an OHM Meter measure for resistance between the Center Needle and the front of R4

14. Now you have successfully "UNLOCKED" your drive!!

The Drive will remain UNLOCKED. If you want to LOCK the Drive you can but it's really not required.

FROM HERE YOU CAN CREATE YOUR FIRMWARE AND WRITE TO THE DRIVE, OR FOLLOW THE BELOW INSTRUCTIONS AND PERFORM A 100% FULL DUMP OF THE DRIVE WHICH WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

15. From here we suggest (But you don't need to do this) Perform a full read of the firmware (100% Full Dump). Go to the "Full Read Firmware" Icon.

IMPORTANT Full reads require the file be sent to your PC. This feature is not yet enabled for STANDALONE MODE!

16. Go ahead the press the OK button and the process will begin.
