The Science

of Safety

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Standards*

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133 Eye and Face Protection

1910.133(a)(1)

"The employer shall ensure that each affected employee uses appropriate eye or face protection when exposed to eye or face hazards from flying particles, molten metal, liquid chemicals, acids or caustic liquids, chemical gases or vapors, or potentially injurious light radiation."

ANSI

A private organization that oversees the development of voluntary consensus standards for products in the United States. ANSI accredits standards that are developed by representatives of standards developing organizations, government agencies, consumer groups, companies, and others.

ANSI Z87.1-2003

"The spectacle product test is designed to test the capability of the complete product, both the removable and non-removable lens products, to meet the requirements of this standard. For purposes of product testing, spectacles shall be tested as a complete device."

1910.133(a)(2)

"The employer shall ensure that each affected employee uses eye protection that provides side protection when there is a hazard from flying objects. Detachable side protectors (e.g. clip-on or slide-on side shields) meeting the pertinent requirements of this section are acceptable."

High Impact Spectacles

"High Impact spectacles shall be capable of resisting an impact from a pointed projectile weighing 17.6 oz. dropped from a height of 50 inches." "High impact spectacles shall be capable of resisting impact from a ¼ inch steel diameter ball traveling at a velocity of 150 feet per second." All of our eye and face protectors listed in this catalog meet the High Impact requirements of ANSI Z87.1-2003.

1910.133(a)(3)

"The employer shall ensure that each affected employee who wears prescription lenses while engaged in operations that involve eye hazards wears eye protection that incorporates the prescription in its design, or wears eye protection that can be worn over the prescription lenses without disturbing the proper position of the prescription lenses or the protective lenses."

1910.133(a)(5)

"The employer shall ensure that each affected employee uses equipment with filter lenses that have a shade number appropriate for the work being performed for protection from injurious light radiation." For complete OSHA standards, go to www.OSHA.gov.

ANSI Z87.1-2003 Section 9 Faceshields 9.1 Introduction

Faceshields are protective devices designed to shield the wearer's face, or portions thereof, in addition to the eyes, from certain hazards. Faceshields shall be worn only in conjunction with spectacles or goggles.

3M Safety Eyewear and DXTM Coating

Our safety eyewear may be new to you, but there is 175 years of experience, research, and technology behind our safety eyewear solutions. Take our proprietary DXTM Coating for example: this coating is built into the eyewear manufacturing process and, with proper care and maintenance, can help extend the life and functionality of the eyewear. It has the added benefits of providing consistently clear vision through anti-fogging technology, abrasion resistance through a unique hard coat feature, resistance to many solvents and chemicals, and an anti-static feature to help keep the lens free from dust and small particles. Look for it in all of our premium offerings including the durable PeltorTM E.V.P.TMCombat Eyewear System and the customizable LexaTM Safety Eyewear System.

3M Special Purpose Lens Tints

Yellow/Contrast Amber

The Yellow/Contrast Amber Lens absorbs blue and ultraviolet light. It filters out hazy blue light that is hard on the eyes (everything seems brighter).

Indoor/Outdoor Lens

The Indoor/Outdoor Lens reduces glare and bright light and provides excellent vision in both indoor and outdoor lighting.

MinimIzeRTM Lens

Developed specifically for people working in low light welding environments. Helps protect against "flash burn", a common and damaging eye hazard that occurs when workers unprotected eyes are exposed to welding arcs. It also helps protect against some infrared radiation. Note: Does not provide protection for welding applications.

OptimeTM Earmuffs

Choosing the right earmuff for workers is a critical decision. A muff with too little attenuation leaves workers vulnerable to noise induced hearing damage. One with too high of a protection level can "overprotect" and make it difficult to hear voices, signals, and make a worker feel isolated. Now there's an easy solution. Just match the numbers to the noise levels.

*The OptimeTM number is a guideline for the maximum time-weighted average (TWA) A-weighted exposures in which these earmuffs, when properly worn and in good condition, can provide adequate protection to meet OSHA hearing conservation guidelines. However, the user must make sure that the specific muff and style selected provides appropriate protection. To be effective, the hearing protector should be used within a hearing conservation program that also includes noise level assessments by qualified personnel, training, audiometric testing and engineering controls. OptimeTM recommendations are based upon testing per method B of ANSI standard S12.6-1997(R2002). Method B provides data that approximate the upper limits to attenuation that can be expected for groups of occupational users. Properly trained and motivated individuals can potentially obtain greater protection. For additional information on Method B, visit www.e-a-r.com/hearingconservation and select the E-A-Rlog series of articles. **Research suggests that many users will receive less noise reduction than indicated by the NRR due to variation in earplug fit and wearing time. Step 4

Training and Fit Testing

Health and Safety Software Library

3M has various health and safety software and on-line (3M.com/OccSafety) tools to help you not only select the right type of respirator, but also estimate the service life of 3MTM Respiratory Chemical Cartridges.

Fitting Instruction Videos, Training Programs and Materials

3M offers many programs, materials and services that enable you to administer a respiratory protection program that helps you meet OSHA requirements. We can assist you and your employees by emphasizing the importance of respirator selection, use, proper fitting procedures, and maintenance. 3M offers several videos (some available in Spanish) that cover the selection and use of our respirators. Additionally, 3M provides posters with easy-to-follow instructions so that important information is readily available to all employees.

Fit Test Apparatuses and Accessories

3M equipment (FT-10, FT-20 and replacement supplies) and procedures provide a simple, direct way to help meet OSHA qualitative fit testing requirements. These products can be used with any particulate or gas/vapor respirator with a particulate prefilter to test face-to-respirator seal. The equipment helps satisfy respiratory program requirements, and is easy to use during respiratory training. The fit test works by spraying a sweet solution into the hood environment. If the wearer does not detect the test agent's taste, an acceptable fit has been demonstrated.
