What Drug Companies Don't Want You to Know about Heart Disease, Cholesterol, and Obesity

What most people believe about their own nutrition and health is -- to put it bluntly -- wrong. The problem is, they put their trust in institutions, private and government-run, that mislead and even lie to them. Millions have suffered and died needlessly as a result of this misplaced trust. For instance, most people are convinced that heart disease and stroke result from a diet high in cholesterol and saturated fats. This notion is based on the flawed idea that cholesterol is the cause of atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. Despite convincing evidence to the contrary, this mistaken idea dominates in the medical profession and in the media. A recent book by Gary Taubes, called "Good Calories, Bad Calories," explores the link between diet and disease, especially obesity and atherosclerosis, in great depth and with considerable skill. People find it difficult to believe that everything they have been told about cholesterol could be wrong. They especially have difficulty believing that their own, personal doctors could be so wrong. After all, these doctors went to medical school . . . and they use a lot of fancy medical jargon -- proof that they must know what they are talking about. Well, I too went to medical school. I know all the jargon, and I practiced neurosurgery for 24 years. During most of my practice, I also believed in traditional medicine and prescribed a lot of pharmaceutical drugs. It wasn't until I began to examine many of these long-held beliefs in much greater detail that I began to discover that, like my colleagues today, I too was being misled. I discovered that, as a practicing doctor, I was parroting a line that was not true.

damage, as well as cardiovascular disease. Confirmation comes from a Framingham Heart Study reported in the prestigious journal The Lancet. The Framingham study found that men with cholesterol below 190 mg/dl tripled their risk of developing colon cancer when compared to those with levels greater than 220 mg/dl. Even lower rates of death following a first heart attack have been found to be unrelated to cholesterol levels. Researchers found no difference between men with levels at 180 mg/dl or lower and those with cholesterol levels greater than 250 mg/dl. Among the most telling findings: Even in the studies cited most often by the press, reductions in heart attack rates, and especially deaths, are quite small -- often only a fraction of a percentage point! For example, the Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial (MRFIT) study found a miniscule 0.4 percent reduction in risk in those who followed a strict, low-cholesterol diet. Such a small improvement would not seem worth the effort for many individuals. So, clever statisticians multiplied the percentage over the entire population to make the figure more impressive. The result was oft-quoted statements such as, "We could prevent 43,000 deaths if people followed a low cholesterol diet." So let's see what three specific studies say about you, as an individual who follows this advice: · A Harvard study found that people who have multiple risk factors for cardiovascular disease might gain three days to three months during their lifetime by avoiding saturated fats. · A University of California, San Francisco, study found an increased life expectancy of three to four months. · A McGill University study found that a low saturated-fat diet would increase your life expectancy anywhere from four days to two months. Not very impressive. The same can be said of statin drugs. In magazine and newspaper ads, the drug companies state in bold type that their statin drug lowers heart attack risk by 36 percent. Check the fine print. There it becomes clear that risk falls just 1 percent. If they proclaimed that their expensive, dangerous drug only lowered your risk by a single

percentage point, you would turn it down. In fact, taking vitamins C and E alone will reduce risk by a much greater percentage. Other supplements combined with a proper diet and exercise dramatically lower your risk -- no drugs needed. This information would be so devastating to drug sales, according to Taube, that the government tried to stop the publication of the studies: The surgeon general's office contacted the journal JAMA and tried to halt publication of the study. To their credit, JAMA refused. Most physicians, and the public, think that the discovery of the various subtypes of fats, particularly LDL-cholesterol, is new. In fact, it was discovered in 1950 by Dr. John Gofman, a professor of medical physics at the University of California. His discovery had the potential of blowing the lid off the cholesterol theory. Gofman found that, in general, it was the triglyceride level, not cholesterol level, that was most closely linked to heart disease and atherosclerosis. By 1960, studies had clearly shown this to be true, yet the cholesterol proponents had the ear of the government and the media, and they were successful in drowning out their challengers. The reason that the government and media resisted the idea that triglycerides were more important is simple: The major regulator of triglycerides in the diet is not cholesterol or fat, but sugar and refined carbohydrates. To admit to this would be to admit that the high carbohydrate diet they had proposed for the past 70 years was killing people. It also explains why diabetics, who often have normal or low levels of cholesterol, have such a high incidence of heart disease and stroke. Remember, the American Diabetes Association for decades has recommended a high carbohydrate diet for diabetics. A diet low in saturated fats and high in sugars and refined carbohydrates lowers HDL cholesterol and raises triglycerides and VLDL cholesterol -- the very pattern that is most associated with cardiovascular and stroke risk, especially among older people.

New Discoveries Not So New

I am always amazed, too, how often old discoveries are presented to the public as new findings. For example, we have been told that scientists recently discovered that there are subtypes of LDL, one called "small dense" LDL and a larger form called large "buoyant" LDL. Careful studies have shown the small dense form of LDL produces the most problems. Ironically the diet suggested by the government agencies -- by the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes Association, and the Institute of Medicine -- causes the liver to produce more of these potentially harmful small dense LDL particles. Sugars and refined carbohydrates are the worst culprits. Saturated fats are known to slightly increase LDL levels, but we now know that protective, larger buoyant LDL particles increase with saturated fats. So, when was this sub-typing of LDL discovered? Incredibly, it was over 40 years ago. Yet, many doctors refuse to order sub-typing because they still do not understand its importance. The small dense LDL is made of a protein called Apo B. Any doctor can order a test that measures the amount of Apo B, which gives a lot more risk information than a total LDL-cholesterol test. A high-sugar, high-refined carbohydrate diet increases triglycerides. It also increases the concentration of Apo B, which is strongly associated with high cardiovascular risk. In medical school, I was taught that there were two forms of diabetes: insulin dependent and insulin independent. In both cases, it was thought that insulin was deficient. The more severe form of deficiency was insulin-dependent, meaning the patient needed insulin shots. Then, in 1965, noted scientists Rosalyn Yalow and Solomon Aaron Berson discovered that some diabetics actually had too much insulin. Their problem, in fact, was insulin resistance due to faulty receptors within the tissues. The idea was slow to catch on, but within two decades it was accepted. Now we know that the greatest increase in the incidence of diabetes is among those with insulin resistance, now called Type 2 diabetes.

In fact, a large number of people have insulin resistance yet do not suffer diabetes, which makes them more difficult to diagnose. A number of studies have shown that, even in those cases, the incidence of cardiovascular disease and stroke goes up tremendously. What Gary Taube shows so well in his book is that there is an intimate connection between insulin resistance, hyperinsulinism, and atherosclerosis. Why? Because at sustained high levels, insulin promotes inflammation within many tissues, including blood vessels. The central process in hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) is chronic inflammation of blood vessels. Evidence for the connection between excess insulin and atherosclerosis comes from studies using rabbits, the animals used in the original studies on cholesterol. Researchers found that if you feed rabbits a high-cholesterol diet but keep insulin levels very low, they do not develop significant atherosclerosis. Add insulin, and they develop substantial atherosclerosis. Linked to this metabolic problem is a disorder called syndrome X, first discovered in 1987, but not mentioned in the popular reports on cardiovascular disease risk until much later. Now it has been renamed metabolic syndrome. It is estimated that more than 45 million Americans have this disorder, which is strongly associated with cardiovascular risk. It is also growing among children at a rapid rate. We know that the metabolic syndrome is associated with three things: · Eating a diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates · Having a magnesium deficiency · Being exposed to MSG (and other food excitotoxin additives) early in life In fact, all three are metabolically related. The link between dietary recommendations from the "experts" and the rise in atherosclerosis among diabetics has been traced. In 1931, John Peters and Evelyn Man measured cholesterol levels in 79 diabetics and found that only nine of the 79 had elevated cholesterol levels. They continued to follow these patients and, by 1962, they found a 40 percent increase in

What few people, including doctors, know is that one of the major sources of oxidized fats -- as well as cholesterol and AGEs -- is what we eat. Fats, especially polyunsaturated fats, become oxidized before they are eaten, usually during cooking. The brown we see on cooked foods is composed of AGEs (called the browning or Maillard reaction), especially in foods containing high sugar levels such as potatoes. French fries and potato chips are major culprits. The big question is, What can we do about them? Recent studies have shown that some supplements can significantly reduce AGE accumulation or reduce their harmful effect. For example, curcumin and quercetin both reduce AGE formation. In fact, many plant extracts -- such as ellagic acid, berberine, green and white tea extract, silymarin, and hesperidin -- reduce AGEs and improve blood sugar metabolism. Alpha-lipoic acid, as a powerful antioxidant and hypoglycemic, also improves insulin resistance and diabetes. A recent study found that a lipid soluble form of the vitamin thiamine (vitamin B-1) called benfotiamine was very efficient in clearing AGEs

from the body. In the study, researchers prepared a high AGE-containing meal by cooking a mix of chicken, potatoes, and carrots in vegetable oil and fed it to 13 adults with Type-2 diabetes. By measuring blood vessel function, the researchers determined the effect of the high AGE meal on cardiovascular function. They found that AGEs profoundly interfered with the function of both larger arteries and of microscopic blood vessels. Subjects in the study who were given benfotiamine were completely protected from the AGEs. Benfotiamine has been shown to reduce insulin resistance and act as an antioxidant. Because AGEs activate the release of C-reactive protein (CRP), they also promote inflammation. The common form of vitamin B-1, however, does not have the same effect. Another way to cut down on AGEs as well as oxidized fats is to avoid using polyunsaturated vegetable oils. Instead, use extra virgin olive oil or extra virgin coconut oil. To add another layer of protection sprinkle some tumeric, cumin, ginger, or other antioxidant spices in the oil and on foods. I use all of them.

Health and Nutrition Updates

Vaccine Police in Maryland

A storm of protest arose recently in Maryland when Prince George's County State's Attorney Glen F. Ivey led the charge to force 1,700 children to endure court-ordered chickenpox and hepatitis B vaccinations, two completely unnecessary vaccines for this age group. Parents were notified to appear in court with the recalcitrant children, during which time they would be forcibly vaccinated. The order was handed down by Circuit Judge William D. Missouri and Circuit Judge C. Philip Nicoles Jr. The forced vaccine order was accompanied by a threat of a $50 fine and/or 10 days in jail for those who refused. In my view, it is the state's attorney and the judges as well as the governor of Maryland who should be in jail. There is evidence that pharmaceutical vaccine manufacturers are lurking behind the scenes, passing out greenbacks. The state of New Jersey recently passed similar criminalization of vaccine refuseniks. Ironically, when asked about the vaccination of his own children, the governor of Maryland refused to disclose the information. He should be forced under oath to answer the question, as should every state official, including the judges involved. What makes forced vaccination so ominous, beside the constitutional issues, is the growing evidence that the vaccines used today are responsible for a growing number of deaths and chronic health problems. For example, Merck recently disclosed that people exposed to the new AIDS vaccine might have a higher vaccine-induced risk of contracting AIDS. The Gardasil vaccine has been responsible for several deaths and serious complications among vaccinated youth. And officials recently informed tens of thousands of people, mostly children, that the vaccines they took were useless because of storage problems, and they would have to be re-vaccinated. Particularly distressing are the new studies showing that vaccination activates the brain's immune system and leads to a number of chronic brain disorders, including autism, language difficulties, behavioral problems, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune disorders -- even death. What the authorities and the courts don't seem to understand is that giving a number of vaccines at one sitting, as ordered by the vaccine police, massively stimulates the immune system. This is what has been shown to produce brain injury, and it can even cause the brains of small children to be permanently malformed. Each vaccine contains a combination of powerful immune stimulants called adjuvants. When you give a child nine vaccines during one office visit, which frequently occurs, they are getting a dose of adjuvant nine times higher than considered safe. According to government statistics, anywhere from 700 to 900 infants died over a 10-year period (1997-2007) from vaccine complications. The head of the FDA admitted that only 1 percent of serious complications are actually reported. Most are blamed on other causes.

Abuse of Children Continues

While the popular press likes to air stories on the horror of child abuse, they shy away from similar stories of abuse by the federal government and elitist education unions. Take for example the aggressive polices used to force drugs on children who have the so-called attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Growing evidence indicates that these drugs do considerable harm to the child's developing brain, yet that never deters the elitist medical authorities. Two new studies have thrown a monkey wrench into the theory of ADHD as a permanent brain defect. In a study by Dr. Philip Shaw and co-workers, reported in the proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the brains of children with ADHD were found not to be abnormally malformed. Rather, they were delayed in development. The study concluded that, given a few more years, these children were as normal as

their classmates. The findings were confirmed by another study appearing in the journal Developmental Psychology, which found that, by the fifth grade, ADHD children attained reading, math and attention levels equal to classmates. Others have noted that over-diagnosis of ADHD among restless children and their treatment with pharmaceuticals is resulting in a "dumbing down" of kids who are normally the most creative and intelligent in society. Some nutrients have been shown to speed up the maturation of the developing brain. These include multivitamins and minerals, DHA and a diet low in refined sugars and carbohydrates and excitotoxin additives.

Protection Against a High-Calorie Diet

diet could be protected from its harmful effects by feeding the animals resveratrol. Studies going back over 30 years have shown that low-calorie diets can slow aging and protect against many chronic diseases including disorders of the brain. Researchers found that the animals under study lived significantly longer. Interestingly, their internal organs, examined under a microscope, looked like those of young animals. One effect of the resveratrol was to improve insulin sensitivity. It also modulated genes that control the body's energy balance. If this can be shown to apply to humans, taking resveratrol as a supplement would protect the organs and tissues in a way resembling a very low-calorie diet, but without the extreme sacrifice.

An extract from grape skins is turning out to be one of the most powerful ways to increase longevity and reduce the ravages of aging. A great number of studies have shown that the grape extract called resveratrol can have profound beneficial effects on protecting cells and organs from the damage caused by aging. A recent study appearing in the journal Nature Neuroscience found that mice on a high-calorie

Attention Blaylock Readers:

Q: I have inherited extremely elevated cholesterol. It has risen 100 points in the last year. I'm a 4-year-old female. Is there anything I can do? -- Sloane M., Atlanta, Ga. A: First, I suggest you read carefully my previous newsletters concerning heart attacks, strokes, and cholesterol. As you will see, an abundance of research indicates that elevated cholesterol is not the problem; rather what causes the elevation is the presence of an inflammatory disorder. Cholesterol poses a problem only if it is oxidized. Studies clearly show that it is only the smalldense LDL particle that becomes oxidized in most people, not all cholesterol. So your total cholesterol doesn't matter. I would first have your doctor order subtyping of your blood lipids. This will give information on your levels of LDLSD, triglycerides, VLDL and apo B levels, which are more closely related to your risk. Triglycerides, LDLSD and apo B -- the atherogenic triad, is a much better gauge. Unfortunately, most doctors know little about this. In addition, you need to have a Creactive protein done to measure your level of inflammation. I would also suggest an examination of homocysteine levels, fibrinogen levels, and lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] levels, which are independent risk factors that have more to do with risk than cholesterol levels. As for your diet, you need to avoid all sugars and refined carbohydrates and this includes potatoes. They all increase insulin levels and induce insulin resistance, which you may very well have. This would account for your elevated cholesterol.

Coincidently, a high HDL is much more important for your protection than the high total cholesterol is a risk. Because of the strong association between gum disease and heart attack risk, I would suggest a careful dental exam (but avoid fluoride treatments). Your diet should consist of no sugars (including fruits and especially fruit juices), and no yogurt or milk. There are a number of natural products that have shown to dramatically reduce atherosclerosis. These include curcumin, quercetin, ellagic acid, DHA (less so EPA), alphalipoic acid, magnesium, natural vitamin E, vitamin C (as ascorbate) and ginger extract. They, especially in combination, are far more powerful in protecting against heart attacks and strokes than the statin drugs. A low cholesterol diet is pure hokum and is not supported by any study. Q: I was just diagnosed with Lyme disease, and I am finding that doctors treat it with antibiotics, possibly for an extended length of time. Is this appropriate? -- Janet B., Chicago, Ill. A: Lyme disease is a growing epidemic in the United States, even in children. The treatment is somewhat controversial. My studies indicate that because this is a bacterium that lives within cells and is therefore very difficult to cure in chronic cases. Prolonged antibiotics are often necessary -- often as long as two or three years. The sooner antibiotics are begun, the better the outcome. Treatment is a very complex topic and beyond what I can say here. But the antibiotics doxocyclin and Zithromax (azithromycin) in combination seem to work best.

The antibiotics not only penetrate the cells, they suppress macrophages and microglial cells (major immune cells) and this is important. Chronic infections often cause much of their damage by making our bodies produce chronically high levels of inflammatory substances (such as cytokines). Cooling these down reduces the damage. Most helpful are curcumin, quercetin, berberine, DHA, vitamin C, natural E and silymarin. These plant flavonoids and vitamins reduce the excess inflammation (such as the iritis and joint pains), protect the liver (also improve detoxification) and calm down microglia and macrophages. Berberine is a natural compound that has been shown to be very effective against a number of intracellular infections, including viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic. Its advantage is that it can be taken for years along with the antibiotics. Damage to the nervous system and heart are of major concern and these supplements plus the antibiotics are very protective. I would also suggest that you be tested for babesia and ehrlichia organisms, which frequently occur in cases of Lyme as co-infections. They can be deadly. Q: What would you suggest to strengthen the immune system of a patient who has been treated for lymphoma and is in remission? Some experts have concerns with the use of beta-glucans and other substances that are known to boost immune cells, because they may also boost the malignant cells. -- Nancy V., Shreveport, La. A: Oncologists seem to worry about the wrong things and ignore the real breakthroughs in cancer research. There is compelling evidence that a number of nutrients (especially flavonoids) play a vital role in both preventing and suppressing the growth and spread of existing cancer. It is an axiom of oncology that the most important weapon within the body against cancer is the immune system, but not all of the immune system. Cellular immunity appears to be most important. This is what attracted researchers to products such as beta-1,3/1,6-glucan -- it primarily stimulates cellular immunity. It has also been shown to protect normal bone marrow cells from damage during chemotherapy

treatment. Because it can protect and replenish normal bone marrow cells, oncologists worry that it might also stimulate leukemia stem cells as well. Theory is fine, but a look at the studies that have been done is necessary to examine this question. While there are a few studies that have tested this, especially in humans, the research we have, indicates that beta-glucan increases the survival of animals with various types of leukemia. Cell culture studies using human leukemia cells provide a mechanism, in that it increases the attack of macrophage antileukemic cells against surviving leukemia cells. Other studies have shown an enhancement of the effectiveness of chemotherapy when beta-glucan is added. Q: I had surgery for diverticulitis with double bowel resection and iliostomy. The iliostomy was reversed but I still have very painful burning bowel movements and rashes which last for days at times. I have adjusted my diet to more alkaline, which has helped. Could this be a Ph imbalance? I take probiotics and digestive enzymes from GNC and have given up milk products. -- Robert J., Ormond Beach, Fla. A: One problem you might have your doctor look into is Candia infections of the bowel. Rashes of the buttocks are common with this and the fact that you probably had antibiotics during recovery would indicate this possibility. Overgrowth of other colon bacteria can also cause such a problem. I would suggest getting a stool culture for bacteria and yeast. (It will need to have subtyping of the yeast and sensitivity studies as well.) If yeast overgrowth is found, you will need treatment with antifungal compounds. I would also suggest N-butyrate, which is a short chain fatty acid that the cells of the intestine use for fuel. It also reduces the risk of colon cancer. DHA, high dose vitamin D-3 (2,000 IU a day) and magnesium (the newly formulated Jigsaw brand is best tolerated -- go to www.jigsawhealth.com) also provide colon health. Avoid acidic foods and drinks until you recover. If you have an overgrowth of yeast, I would also suggest using either beta-1,3/1,6-glucan or a product called Carivora (go to amazon.com).

The Myth of the Once-A-Day Multivitamin

It seems easy enough. Take a single vitamin pill once a day to get all the essential nutrients your body needs, but that are sadly missing from the typical diet. Surely the most popular multivitamins adequately cover your nutritional bases, right? Certainly these big once-a-day multivitamin companies have spent lots of money researching the perfect blends of high-quality ingredients to help you feel your best... haven't they? Sadly the answer isn't what you may hope. Big-business multivitamin companies have spent billions of dollars in advertising to convince us that a single once-a-day multivitamin can bridge the gap between our increasingly poor diets and optimal health. But the truth is, that's just a myth. What you actually get from one of those pills is small potencies of some (not all) vitamins and mineralsin low-quality, poorly absorbed forms. Unfortunately, decisions on what goes into that pill are usually based on two questions: 1. "What can we fit into one tablet?" and 2. "How cheaply can it be made?"

TM

Introducing the Real Thing.

The question is: Do you want to just "get by," which an ordinary one-a-day multivitamin might help you do? Or do you want to thrive? Do you want to feel a ridiculous amount of energy during the day, sleep like a baby at night, and feel on top of your game 24/7? We thought so. That's why we want to introduce you to the real thing: Jigsaw CompleteTM, available exclusively from Jigsaw Health. At Jigsaw Health, our formulating decisions are based on these three questions:

1

2 3

"Which nutrients, antioxidants and essential fatty acids are most beneficial to human health?" "How much of each of these ingredients is needed to create a real, noticeable impact?" "What is the highest quality, most active form of these ingredients?"

What Others Are Saying About Jigsaw Complete

I don't know much about vitamins but I do know that I feel better than I have felt in years. I sleep great. I wake up feeling great and I have energy all day long. I never really felt much difference with the one-a-day multivitamin I used to take. I took it because it seemed like the right thing to do, especially since I don't eat as healthy as I probably should. Plus, I don't want to be a vitamin expert, I have too many other things to think about, so I never really knew what else to take if not that multivitamin.

6 Pieces to Solve Your Daily Multi-Vitamin Puzzle

Each box of Jigsaw Complete contains a 30-day supply of the most essential and highly absorbable vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phyto-nutrients, and essential fatty acids in convenient morning and evening packets.

Each day contains the following powerful blend:

These packets mean I don't have to be an expert. I feel confident I'm getting everything I need but more importantly, I can feel the difference. I love these and can definitely tell if I miss a day. My energy level is much higher since I began this program and I have really been sleeping better each night. I recently ordered the AM and PM supplement packets. I find them incredibly convenient for my fast paced mornings - instead of grabbing supplements out of 5 different bottles I have then neatly pre-packed in little packets. Saves time and now I know I am getting the right vitamins and supplements at the right times. Thanks Jigsaw!
