Gloucester: The Birthplace of the American Fishing Industry

For over 375 years, the fishing industry has been the lifeblood of Gloucester, and the City has earned the reputation as a leading supplier of fresh and frozen seafood. Gloucester has consistently ranked in the top ten ports in the country in terms of fish landings, and a diverse network of onshore facilities is in place to process and transport the product from the boat to the consumer. Gloucester is also home port for a number of frozen fish processors, including Gorton's, the nation's number one producer of frozen packaged seafood. Gloucester's pre-eminence in the fishing industry derives not just from the port's unique geography and natural resources but is also due to such factors as trucking and shipping lines which offer frozen and refrigerated transportation to domestic and foreign markets; ample freezer and cold storage facilities; an experienced work force; the well-developed infrastructure that provides support services for the industry; the entrepreneurial drive reflected in the hundreds of companies involved in the fisheries; and the strength of the local organizations which work on behalf of different segments of the industry. In recent years, there has been considerable investment in new processing and handling facilities along the waterfront. The most notable development has been the creation of the Gloucester Seafood Display Auction, a 40,000 square foot facility servicing over 100 vessels and a full complement of seafood buyers. Constructed at a cost of $2.5 million, the Auction has had a major impact on the quantity and quality of landings in the port. There is also a sense of excitement on the Fish Pier. Expanded dockage for the fleet was completed in the past decade, and Cape Seafoods has emerged as a major processor of herring and mackerel. Considerable resources and energy are also being invested in diversifying the catch, taking greater advantage of aquaculture opportunities, and establishing Gloucester as a center for marine research and technology. These developments auger well for the future of the port. We hope this Resource Directory will be helpful to you, and encourage your inquiries about Gloucester and its fishing industry.
