Training

Falls from height are the main cause of workplace fatality, last year 45 people died due to a fall from height in the workplace. This figure is shrinking year on year (53 people lost their lives in the same period the previous year) due to the improvement of the awareness of safety whilst working at height. It is very important that this trend continues. Experience shows that falls from height usually occur as a result of poor management control rather than because of equipment failure (source HSE 2006/2007) As a user of Powered Access equipment you will no doubt be aware of the current regulations (LOLER, PUWER, HASWA and WAHR). Failure of an employer to provide adequate training can make them liable to prosecution. AJ Access Platforms have experienced IPAF (International Powered Access Federation) registered instructors and we are an IPAF Accredited CAP Assessment Centre, having extensive knowledge of the Powered Access Platforms industry; we have successfully trained over 10,000 operatives throughout the UK and Europe. Operators that undertake training with A J Access Platforms can receive their licences within 48 hours of successful completion of the course, the licence they receive are then valid for 5 years.

Regulations

Falls from height are the main cause of workplace fatality and the second most common cause of major injury to employees, accounting for around 12% of all such injuries. It's easy to see why the HSE has made reducing the number of falls from height a priority. In 2007/08 the total number of fatal injuries rose by 12% to 58 members of personnel. Personnel don't have to fall far to be hurt, 7 of these un-necessary deaths were from a fall from below head height. Ladders, roofs and scaffold were the most common agents associated with a fatal injury to workers during this period, and the Construction Industry accounted for 59% of all fatalities to workers as a result of falling from a height. (source HSE 2006)

The Management of Health & Safety at work regulation 1999

· Requires risk assessment to be carried out · Precautions must be taken in proportion to risk, to eliminate or control · Precautions taken must be reasonable in relation to risk · Safe systems of work must be devised where risk can not be eliminated, employees must follow and employers must ensure they do

Working at height regulations 2006

· Increased emphasis on safety at height · Increased frequency of site visits · Less acceptability of ladders · Lighting must be kept to acceptable levels to enable people to work safely

Statistics like this have meant...

· Increased emphasis from the HSE · Revisions / additions to Regulations and Guidelines · Increased promotion of responsibilities & guidelines · In some cases `Corporate Manslaughter' verdicts · Awareness in many sectors of industry

PM28- Guidance Notes

· Relates to use of non-integrated cages on Forklifts · Must be fitted with cage control (unless exceptional circumstances can be proven) · Forklift controls must be isolated

The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974

· Places an employer responsible for the health and welfare of their employees · Gives the employer an overall duty of care to provide systems, procedure, training, equipment and clothing · Advises employees on their responsibility for themselves, colleagues and members of the public whilst they are at work.

Provision and use of work equipment Regulations 1998

· Equipment must be suitable for the task · Equipment must be maintained at regular intervals · Operators must be suitably experienced and trained
