MISSION STATEMENT

The mission statement of Ascension Catholic School is "To Educate, Celebrate, and Serve in the Spirit of Christ." We will provide a curriculum that fosters Catholic values and faith development. This innovative curriculum will respect the students' individual differences, nurture the whole child, and prepare the students to meet the challenges of the 21st century. ENROLLMENT

The mission of Ascension School focuses on providing a quality Catholic education and formation for as many children of our parish community as possible. The primary prerequisite for families wishing to enroll and maintain enrollment is the family's commitment to be responsible stewards by being active and supportive members of Ascension Parish. To be active and supportive members includes the following: a) commitment to weekly participation in the weekend Mass including regular attendance at Ascension Parish, b) involvement in the parish through active service to the parish and/or school community, and c) financial support for the parish and its ministries through an annual financial stewardship commitment and regular financial contributions in proportion to income received. School families are requested to direct their entire 10% to the church (9% to the parish and 1% to the Archbishop's Annual Appeal.) The tithe is based on gross income. Changes in tithe should be noted in writing to the Director of Stewardship. With an understanding that every family is required to be active stewards of the parish as outlined above, the following guidelines are followed by the School Admissions Committee in approving school enrollment:

1. Part of the registration process is for the family to affirm that they are committed to be parish stewards by being active and supportive

parishioners as outlined above. A current annual stewardship appeal card and a current time and talent commitment form are to be on file with the parish office. New families need to give evidence of their past and current commitment to stewardship of time, talent, and treasure. Those failing to do so will not be considered steward families. 2. The order of priority for students is as follows: a. Current students from steward families* b. Current students who are not parish members c. Siblings of current students from steward families** d. Siblings of current students who are not parish members e. New students ranked according to the following: i. Length of membership in the parish and long-time evidence of parish stewardship ii. Newer families in the parish with evidence from previous parish of active support and financial support iii. Longer term parishioners with little evidence of parish stewardship but who are committed to becoming parish stewards iv. Non-parish Catholic families who commit to pay tuition v. Families who are not Catholic who commit to pay tuition 3. Ascension School is committed to provide a Catholic education to as many families as possible who exhibit a sincere desire for enrollment in the school. This requires a good faith commitment and effort on the part of all families. Sometimes families may find themselves in difficult financial situations due to job, health, obligations, etc. Parishioners who have special need because of such challenges but have exhibited a commitment to parish stewardship previously may request other arrangements regarding the financial commitment to the parish. This is to be done in writing and submitted to the Admissions Committee in care of the parish office. If desirable, this information may be directed to the pastor who will share it with the School Admissions Committee as deemed appropriate. 4. These guidelines may be adjusted in light of particular circumstances at the discretion of the School Admissions Committee with the approval of the pastor in consultation with the appropriate parish leadership.

5. Questions regarding the stewardship expectations for parishioners may be addressed to the parish Director of Stewardship at the parish office

(681-3348). *Financial stewardship is an essential part of our parish life, and all parishioners are called to contribute proportionate to their income to meet parish financial needs and obligations. A good faith commitment and effort on the part of all are essential to the viability of our parish and its ministries. Once enrolled, families must maintain their status as steward families in order to retain priority for the future year's enrollment. **Students are considered siblings if their brother or sister was enrolled and performed sufficient academic work so as to receive a report card from Ascension Catholic School for the fourth quarter of the school year prior to the school year for which registration is requested. Non-Catholic students are granted continuous enrollment based on pledging their time and talent and payment of their Out-of-Parish tuition. If there are more applicants in a category than there is space available in a class, the Admissions Committee will make the determination of those students placed in a class and students' positions on the waiting list. All students remaining on the waiting list at the end of a school year, because space has not been available, will roll over to the waiting list according to priority for the next school year if they register for that next school year. New applicants will be added to the waiting list in an order determined by historical stewardship. The decisions of the Ascension School Admissions Committee are to be held as final. Appeal may be made to the Parish Council only in cases questioning consistency and fairness in application of policies.

NEW STUDENTS

Schools in the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas admit students of any ability, race, and national or ethnic origin to all the rights, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at all schools. To be considered for admission, students must register each school year, and a non-refundable $100 registration fee paid. For all students entering school for the first time, physical and dental examinations are required. Families must also submit the following for each child entering school: baptismal certificate (unless baptized at Church of the Ascension), birth certificate, up-to-date certificate of immunization, and verification of guardianship (if other than parent). Children who apply for admission into first through eighth grades must submit transcripts and standardized tests from prior schools. They will be considered for admission if they have a "C" grade point average or above and no history of discipline or behavior problems in the school from which they have come. They will be placed initially in the grade level they would have reached in the previous school. After the teachers and principal have had sufficient time to complete an evaluation of the child's skills, the principal will determine the final grade placement for the child. For those who have been home-schooled, the principal will make the final decision based upon an interview, student portfolio, achievement tests, or any other curriculum assessments administered by the school. The principal may deny admission to anyone for good and sufficient reason. All transfer students will be on probation for at least one semester with monthly reviews. If the transferring student maintains passing ("C" average) grades and avoids repeated or serious violations of school/class rules, the student will continue under regular status.

ACADEMICS

ACCREDITATION

Ascension Catholic School is accredited by the state of Kansas through Quality Performance Accreditation and Kansas North Central Association accreditation. All regulations of these accrediting agencies are met.

CURRICULUM

The program of studies at Ascension Catholic School includes religion, reading and language arts, spelling/vocabulary, mathematics, science, social studies, music, art, physical education, computer, and Spanish. Our curriculum goals and outcomes are designed by the subject area committees of the Archdiocesan Curriculum Team and also meet Kansas state guidelines. The curriculum guidelines for each class are available in the school office.

GRADES

For students in third through eighth grades, achievement will be evaluated on the following scale: A = 94-100 B = 87-93 C = 75-86 D = 68-74 F = 67 and below Progress for those in kindergarten through second grade is evaluated on a scale that is more appropriate for very young children. To be eligible for graduation/promotion from Ascension Catholic School, a student must have a minimum grade point percentage above 68% (D-) in all core content areas, including religion.

HOMEWORK

Homework is assigned to all Ascension students. It provides independent practice that is needed for mastery. All assignments should be completed neatly, correctly, and on time. The work assigned for home may be a written exercise, a set amount of pages to be read, material to study, or a project to be completed. It is an extension of the school day and/or a review of the work of the day. It may also be in an area where a student needs some extra help/practice. It is the responsibility of each student to complete all homework assignments. As a staff we appreciate parent support in helping us to instill this sense of responsibility in child(ren). We are grateful to parents for guiding students to develop a realistic and workable approach to completing their assigned lessons. We ask that parents help establish a homework routine which communicates a serious attitude about school work/homework. Parents can assist in developing good study habits in their children by doing the following: providing a definite time and place for study, providing a quiet atmosphere (no TV), and showing a real interest in the child's work, but letting the child take responsibility for the assignment.

INCOMPLETE WORK

Parents will be notified when students fail to complete work in the designated manner and time. Students must complete the work; however, there will be a reduction of points for all late assignments. Students may be required to complete assigned work before school, after school, and/or through an extended school year program in order to maintain a satisfactory status in the classroom and to be eligible for promotion the following school year.

For fifth through eighth graders, the following policies apply:

1. If a student does not turn in an assignment on its given due date in any class, that student is required to stay after school (3:15 until 4:15) that

day and complete the work for a 10% reduction in score. Parents will be called to relay this information.

2. If a student does not stay after school to complete the work, he/she must turn in the assignment the following morning by 7:45 for a 25% 3. 4. 5. 6.

reduction in score. If a student fails to complete an assignment even after these opportunities, his/her score will be 0%. If a student reaches five missing/late assignments in a four-week period, that student must stay after school every day for one full week and complete all of his/her homework. When a student is absent for an unforeseen reason (illness, family emergency, etc,), he/she will have two school days for each day absent to complete work. If a test, quiz, or project was announced prior to the student's absence, that student should be prepared to take the test/quiz or turn in the project the day he returns. When a student is aware that he/she will be absent prior to the absence (family vacation, high school shadowing, athletic tournaments, etc.), that student must make prior arrangements with teachers to take tests or quizzes, or turn in projects, before departure. If a student does not make such arrangements, the test/quiz/project is taken or due on the day of return.

ATTENDANCE

School Hours 7:45 A.M. until 3:15 P.M. Office Hours 7:15 A.M. until 3:30 P.M. Children are welcome to arrive at school as early as 7:15 A.M. but may not arrive before that time. After 7:43 A.M., parents must park and escort their child(ren) into school through the front entrance and bring them into the office to obtain a tardy slip. School begins promptly at 7:45 A.M.; students should be seated and ready for instruction at this time. Students walking into homeroom after 7:45 A.M. will be considered tardy and must report to the office to receive a tardy slip. Repeated tardiness will result in a parent conference, and time will be made up before or after school. After six tardies per quarter, fifth through eighth graders will serve a detention. Regular attendance is vital to a student's success. Doctor and dentist appointment and family vacations should be scheduled outside of school times or during breaks. A yearly calendar is provided so that plans can be made in advance. If a family chooses to take a vacation during school days, the teachers will provide missed homework when the student returns to school. On the other hand, a child with a temperature, severe cold, persistent cough, diarrhea, or vomiting should stay home--for quicker recovery and for classmates' protection from infection. Parents should call or e-mail the school nurse ([email protected]) by 8:30 A.M. to report an absence. Students are to report to the nurse's office upon returning to school after an extended illness. Homework requests must be made during the parent's early morning call in order to give the teachers sufficient time to gather the information. Homework will be ready to be picked up in the front hall at 2:45 P.M. Students absent from school due to illness/sickness cannot participate in any school related extracurricular event or practice during the day or evening of the reported illness/sickness. If a student has an appointment during the school day, parents should e-mail or send a note to the school office and the homeroom teacher that morning. The office will issue the student a pass that will allow him/her to leave the classroom at the appropriate time. At the time indicated, the teacher will send the child to the office, where parents may sign him/her out of school. To comply with state attendance laws, students cannot leave school early on a regular basis. Students will be released only to persons named on the Emergency Contact Form on file in the office. If another person will be picking up a child (e.g. a teenage brother or sister, a grandparent, an aunt, or neighbor), the parents' note should provide that information. We will not release a child to someone other than a parent without this permission slip and appropriate identification.

More than five unexcused absences per quarter will result in a conference with the student, parents, and administrator. Ascension reserves the right to dismiss a child from school or deny readmission the following year for excessive absences from school. A doctor's note will be necessary when your child has been absent for 5 or more consecutive days, when your child has been absent for any type of communicable disease, and/or when your child is not able to participate in P.E. class for a week or more. The note should state when the child can return to full or restricted activities. Please send the note to the office when your child returns to school. Kansas state law requires all schools to report excessive and chronic tardies and absences to the Johnson County District Attorney's Office for corrective action. If Ascension Catholic School feels that your child's academic success is being hindered by excessive or chronic unexcused tardies or absences, the action listed above will be pursued. As of November 1, 2000, the state of Kansas deems unexcused tardies and absences significant when one of these conditions occurs: (3) three consecutive days; (5) five days in a semester; or (7) seven days in a school year. Kansas statutes allow for each school to deem whether a particular absence is excused or unexcused. Ascension School deems excused absences as those that relate only to an illness, doctor's excuse, or death in the family. Ascension School also states that a significant portion of a school day is missed when a student misses two (2) or more class sessions or hours in a single school day. Students coming to school after 9:30 A.M. will be counted 1/2 day absent. Also, a student leaving for the day before 1:30 P.M. will be counted 1/2 day absent.

STUDENT SERVICES

AFTER SCHOOL CARE

Ascension offers After School Care on full days of school from 3:15 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. There is a $35 per child registration fee. The monthly cost is $160, with discounts available for the third child in the family. The program includes recreational and creative activities, as well as homework supervision. Registration forms are available in the school office. Any student not picked up from school by 3:30 P.M. will be taken to After School Care, and the family will be billed for this service.

COUNSELING

Ascension contracts with Catholic Community Services to provide counseling services for the school. Our counselor is available for all students and serves as a consultant and resource person for parents and teachers. The counselor is here four days a week, Monday through Wednesday, from 9:00 A.M. until 3:30 P.M, and Thursday from 9:00 until 1:30 P.M. If you would like to speak with the counselor, send a note or leave a telephone message.

HEALTH

While the nurse's primary role is to oversee the basic healthcare needs of students, in addition she maintains health records for each student, dispenses medication, provides first aid, and oversees health screenings. Vision and hearing screenings are conducted at school in the fall. A parent who does not want a child screened in vision or hearing is requested to send a note to this effect to the principal soon after school begins in August. All medications must be kept in the nurse's office and dispensed by the nurse or designee. Students are not allowed to keep any medication, prescription or non-prescription, in their classrooms, lockers or backpacks. Any student carrying medication will be subject to disciplinary action. Non-prescription medications must be accompanied by a written request from the parent to administer when needed. The medication must be in the original container with the label clearly identifiable. Prescription medication must be in the original pharmacy container which clearly states the child's name, dosage, prescription number, and physician's name. It must be accompanied by a written request from parents asking the school to dispense the medication. In order for us to assist in monitoring the effectiveness of prescription medication, parents are required to disclose any medications that their child is taking.

In the event your child is ill, he/she will not be allowed to attend school until free from fever, diarrhea and vomiting for 24 hours. Please be compliant with this rule to respect the health of other students. If your child contracts any communicable illness, please contact the nurse so a contagion notice may be sent to the other classmates. A contagion notice does not contain the name of students. It is strictly to alert parents of a classmate with a contagious illness. Communicable illnesses include Strep throat, Conjunctivitis (pink eye), Influenza, Chicken Pox, Impetigo, Fifth Disease, Mononucleosis, Viral Meningitis, Head Lice, and Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease.

LIBRARY

Students are welcome to visit the library to check books in and out. They are responsible for returning the books they have checked out on time and in excellent condition; students must replace any lost or damaged book.

SPECIAL SERVICES

The Blue Valley School District administers the special education programs at Ascension Catholic School. Programs are offered to students who are talented and gifted, learning disabled, speech and hearing impaired, and physically handicapped. The teacher, the parent, or the principal may make referrals for these programs. Specialists from the public schools will determine the level of talent or the severity of need in each child referred and propose an appropriate plan/recommendation. With guidance from the Blue Valley specialists and Ascension's resource teachers, the Ascension staff will do its best to nurture and respond to the individual needs and learning styles of each child. Learning Center assistance is available for those students in need of remediation in math and reading. Please contact the child's homeroom teacher or one of the resource teachers to initiate an academic evaluation.

COMMUNICATIONS

Communication between school and home is of utmost importance, and we want you to feel free to contact us at any time. Your child's teacher should be the first person you contact in any classroom or curriculum matter--either by phone or email. Please allow 24 hours for a response. If you'd like to have a conference with a teacher, we ask you to make an appointment and NOT simply drop in. Teachers are busy professionals and want to give you the time you need for a profitable conversation. Twice each month, we will post newsletters on the ACS website. Please refer to the school calendar for specific dates. If you wish to put something in the newsletter, the following guidelines must be followed: Items must be consistent with the ACS Mission Statement: To Educate, Celebrate, and Serve in the Spirit of Christ. ONLY items related to approved ACS or parish events may be included. This shall include CYO, PTO, Scouting, teacher/parent communication related to school or parish events. Items related to a for-profit entity are not allowed for distribution. Items must meet the parish fundraising guidelines which are available in the parish office. All fundraising ideas must then be approved by an Ascension Catholic School administrator. Specific questions should be directed to the ACS principal. To avoid claims of nepotism and/or favoritism and to align with stewardship guidelines, individuals and families cannot solicit or advertise the selling of wares and services through any media at Ascension Catholic School.

POWERSCHOOL

Through PowerSchool, parents may review their children's academic grades, attendance, and lunch balances. Please understand that grades for assignments or tests might not be available for several days to allow time for the teacher to grade the work and post it. Families will be given separate usernames and passwords for each child to access PowerSchool. The website location is http://ascension.powerschool.com/public.

SCHOOLREACH

SchoolReach is a parent notification system to announce school closings or other important events. Parents' mobile phone numbers and the telephone numbers at home and work will all be accessed simultaneously unless we receive a request to limit this notification. SchoolReach will leave a voicemail message if the phone is not answered immediately.

RENAISSANCE PLACE

Ascension uses Renaissance Place at school for "Accelerated Reader" (quizzes over books read), "Accelerated Math" (practices and tests over grade-level mathematics objectives), "MathFacts in a Flash" (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts), and two diagnostic tests--"Star Reading" and "Star Math." At home, a student should log on to https://hosted138.renlearn.com/738121/HomeConnect/Login.aspx and enter his/her username and password for the following purposes: to access "AR Book Finder," which supplies basic information on books (availability of an AR quiz, reading level, interest level, etc.); to practice mathematics objectives or math facts; or to review progress made on reading and mathematics goals.

STUDY ISLAND

Study Island is a research-based, online support program for reading, mathematics, science, and social studies which students may access at home or school through this location: www.studyisland.com. Students have usernames and passwords which allow them to complete tutorials and quizzes over grade-level standards in the subjects listed. Results of their study sessions are recorded and made available to teachers, including sessions completed at home. Parents may also log on with the same username and password to access reports on their children's work.

DISCIPLINE

At Ascension Catholic School, we believe that our students grow and develop by learning how to make good decisions ­ academically, morally, and behaviorally ­ and following Christ's example. Each classroom teacher is committed to nurturing this growth by creating a Christian classroom climate based on fair and firm expectations and consequences. The following discipline guide is designed to be used in tandem with each teacher's rules, and will be implemented in the event that actions contrary to these expectations occur. These logical disciplinary consequences for infractions against our school and classroom rules are designed to ensure a safe, healthy, learning environment ­ one that promotes our Catholic values. The sequence on this guide does not align with frequency of instances; instead, it indicates possible consequences based on the seriousness of each incident. Ascension Catholic School reserves the right to deviate, if necessary, from the order of action described in this plan. We also reserve the right to act upon any disciplinary disturbance which may not be included in this document. Accumulated occurrences of any disciplinary instance will warrant heightened disciplinary action; that action will be determined by Ascension administrators. Students of Ascension Catholic School are expected to comply with school rules whenever they are on school or church property, or are attending an off-site school activity. Anti-Bullying Policy

State and Archdiocesan policies require every Kansas school to include an anti-bullying statement in school handbooks. Below is the policy from the Archdiocesan School Office: I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. John 13:34 Ascension Catholic School is committed to providing a Catholic, faith-filled environment for all students, employees, volunteers and patrons in which Christ-like behaviors are ever present. This Catholic environment will be free from harassment, intimidation or bullying. If any such behaviors do occur, all community members will be able to tell and know that the incident is unacceptable and will be dealt with effectively in a Christ-like way. Definition: "Harassment, intimidation or bullying" means any intentional written, verbal, or physical act that harms a student or damages the student's property; has the effect of substantially interfering with a student's education; is so severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates an intimidating or threatening educational environment; or has the effect of substantially disrupting the orderly operation of the school. Harassment, intimidation or bullying can take many forms including slurs, rumors, jokes, innuendos, demeaning comments, cartoons, pranks, gestures, physical attacks, threats, or other written, oral or physical actions. "Intentional acts" refers to the individual's choice to engage in the act rather than the ultimate impact of the action(s). Counseling, corrective discipline, and/or referral to law enforcement will be used to change the behavior of the perpetrator and remediate the impact on the victim. This includes appropriate intervention(s), restoration of a positive, Christ-like environment, and support for victims and others impacted by the violation. False reports of or retaliation for reporting harassment, intimidation or bullying also constitutes violations of this policy.

DRESS CODE/STUDENT APPEARANCE

Uniform items are purchased from Dennis Uniform, 6322 College Blvd., 913/381-6500 (www.dennisuniform.com code I0M) or Educational Outfitters (all items except jumpers and skirts) at 8635 Hauser, Lenexa, KS 66215, phone number 913-495-9488. Skirts (girls in 5th through 8th grades) and jumpers (Kindergarten through 4th grade) must be purchased from Dennis Uniform. They must be no shorter than 4 inches above the knee. Skirts must be worn at the waist. Pants/Shorts: Navy blue Dennis Uniform/Educational Outfitters-style pants and shorts with waistband, flat or pleated front, and front zipper shall be worn; no corduroys; no Capri pants; no cargo pants; no flared bottom pants or oversized pants/shorts. Shorts should be no shorter than four inches above the knee. No faded, ripped, torn, or baggy pants may be worn. Pants and shorts must be worn at the waist. Belts are required for students in second through eighth grades. They must be plain black or brown--no ornamentation of any kind. Shirts: Long sleeved or short sleeved polos with buttons or turtlenecks in white, yellow or hunter green; must be collared without any type of ornamentation, emblem, or logo; Oxford cloth shirts in white or girls white broadcloth blouses in white with plain Peter Pan collars. Yellow and green polos or turtleneck shirts MUST match Dennis Uniform/Educational Outfitters colors. Spirit wear shirts may be worn only on Spirit Days. T-shirts that are worn underneath uniform shirts must coordinate with the shirt--white under white or yellow, dark under green. Logos or print cannot show through the uniform shirt. All shirts must be long enough to remain tucked in and not rolled. Sweatshirts: Navy blue or hunter green sweatshirts with the school monogram may be worn. These are available through PTO. Only school uniform sweatshirts may be worn. Sweatshirts may not be tied around the waist or neck. Sweaters: Cardigan or v-neck with monogram ­ available through Dennis Uniform and Educational Outfitters. Children may wear any sweater outside during recess or PE, but must have the monogram sweater if worn inside as part of the uniform. Socks are required. They should be plain white, navy blue, yellow, and hunter green with no emblems, colored band, bows, lace, bells, beads, or ornamentation. Girls may wear navy blue, white, black, or hunter green tights or leggings. Leggings must be purchased from Dennis Uniform or follow that style, i.e., straight and close to the leg. They may not stop just under the knee, have wide legs, or flare at the ankle. No stockings/hose are allowed. Shoes must be closed toe and closed heel. Clogs, Crocs, Heelys, sandals, platform shoes, boots, beads, sequins, lights, etc. are not permitted. Tennis shoes with laces (no slip-ons) are required on PE days and strongly recommended on all other school days as well. Shoes with ties must be tied or Velcro fastened. Junior High Options--Khaki shorts/slacks (Dennis Uniform/Educational Outfitters), uniform hooded sweatshirts (boys) and fleece pullovers (girls) may be worn by seventh and eighth grade students only. The sweatshirts and pullovers must be ordered through the PTO Spiritwear Committee. P.E. --Seventh and eighth graders are expected to wear special clothes for P.E. classes. The uniforms must be purchased through Dennis Uniform or Educational Outfitters.

SPIRIT DAYS

Fridays are typically designated as "Spirit Days," which means that students may wear approved ACS spiritwear shirts with their uniforms. Shirts must be tucked into uniform jumpers/skirts/pants. These items are available only through the PTO Committee. On "Spirit Jeans Days," students may wear jeans (not faded, ripped, or torn) with their ACS spiritwear.

STUDENT APPEARANCE

Scouts may wear approved Scout uniforms to school on meeting days. For Dress Down/Spirit Days, thin or spaghetti straps, sleeveless shirts, and tank tops are not allowed. For Dress Down/Spirit Days, no athletic shorts and no faded, ripped, torn, or baggy pants or shorts may be worn. Boys' hair must be above the ears, eyebrows, and collar. Sideburns must be no longer than mid-ear length. Faces must be clean shaven.

Hair must be well groomed with no bizarre or outlandish hairstyles that cause excessive attention. Hair cannot be dyed or bleached. There can be no unnatural highlights. No make-up, glitter, or tattoos, permanent or temporary, will be allowed on any student with the following exception: Girls in seventh and eighth grades may wear lightly applied make-up. Eye shadow and dark lipsticks are not allowed. No fingernail polish will be allowed, except for seventh and eighth grade girls, who may wear clear nail polish kept in good condition. Girls may wear small stud earrings only, not hoop or dangling earrings. No earrings will be allowed on boys. Necklaces may not be worn with the exception of one religious medal. Students are limited to one bracelet. If the appearance is immediately correctable, the student will be asked to do so (e.g., wash the make-up off). Students will be given a note explaining the violation which must be corrected. If appropriate clothing is available at school, the student will be expected to change; otherwise, the parent will be called. In case of severe or repeated violations, the parent will be called to bring appropriate clothing.

SAFETY

Keeping children safe is a priority at Ascension. Please adhere to the safety precautions listed below. Drop-off of students begins at 7:15 A.M. Please drive slowly and pull up as far along the curb as possible to allow the maximum number of cars to drop off at one time. Let children out of your vehicle on the right hand side only, and wait (no passing others) for the cars ahead of you to move before pulling forward. Students can enter the building through the gymnasium door and go into the gym for supervision. All cars need to drive through the drop-off line. If you need to walk your child in, please park in the church lot and escort your child using the crosswalks. A crossing guard employed by the city of Overland Park is at the crosswalk by the main entrance of the school at the following times: 7:25-7:55 A.M. and 3:00-3:30 P.M. For afternoon pick up, there are three possibilities: 1) Families picking up only kindergarten, first, or second graders should form a line of cars by the Adoration Chapel. 2) Families picking up their own children only, including students older than second graders, should form a line of cars at the front entrance. 3) Carpool drivers should park in the lot by the church. Please do not drive across the crosswalk area or park in the fire lanes at any time. There will be barriers to the driveway by the school entrance and to the teacher parking lot in the afternoon. The barrier will be removed at 3:25. Please respect the Safety Patrol's presence. Be respectful of handicap parking spaces. Police will be notified and fines will be given to violators. Students will be dismissed only to a parent/guardian or an individual listed on the emergency form. Please send a note to school if another adult will pick up your child from school. Bicycles and scooters are prohibited unless helmets are worn. Bicycles, scooters, etc., should not be ridden in the parking lot. Running is prohibited inside the school building and in the parking lot. Rocks, dirt, snow, or any other projectile may not be thrown or kicked. Regardless of the situation, no student should ever leave the school premises during school hours without permission from the office. A student must be signed out/in by a parent or designee in the office before leaving and upon returning. All school doors will be locked to visitors during school hours for the protection of our students. This is simply a safety measure. Parents and other visitors should use the buzzer at the main school entrance to enter the building. Children should be accompanied into the building. All parents and visitors are required to sign-in at the office and wear a visitor's badge. This simple step makes Ascension students, staff, and faculty aware that everyone has checked in through the office. The school will notify parents of anything that might have an impact on the safety and well-being of students.

A nurse is on the premises during school hours. When a child is injured or becomes ill at school, parents will be notified. If we cannot reach parents in a serious emergency, the child will be transported to the hospital accompanied by a school staff member. A school accident policy is carried on each child; the premium is included with a family's stewardship. Forms are available in the nurse's office. ACS has formal procedures in place to secure the safety of the students when unexpected threatening situations arise that require schoolwide action. Fire and tornado drills are held at regular intervals throughout the school year. Visitors should leave the building along with the students when the fire alarm rings. When a tornado warning is indicated, please go to the Lower Level of the school until the "all clear" is announced. If it becomes necessary to evacuate the building and the school grounds, we will walk to Grace Fellowship Church at the corner of 127th and Switzer. If it becomes necessary to evacuate internally, all students and staff will proceed to the Lower Level. In both cases, students will be released to parents when it is safe to do so.

PROCEDURES

BIRTHDAYS

On a child's birthday he/she may bring nutritious treats for the class. Please make sure that the treats are able to be distributed easily to everyone in the class. Please do not send drinks. The student should inform the teacher at the beginning of the day about the treat. The teacher will then include the birthday celebration in that day's schedule. Party invitations or any other invitations are not to be delivered at school unless every child (or every girl/every boy) in the class receives one; in addition, gifts and/or locker decorations are not permitted at school. Students are encouraged to be conscious of the feelings of all children and to include everyone whenever possible. You may also celebrate your child's birthday (or half-birthday) by bringing and sharing lunch with him/her in the cafeteria. Please consult your child's teacher to arrange a date on or around the birthday and confirm the lunch time. Please call the office with that date after confirmation. This is a special event for you and your child. We ask that your son's/daughter's friends remain with their class.

EMERGENCY FORMS

It is absolutely imperative that all emergency forms be turned in before the first day of school. It would be a tragedy if a child becomes involved in an emergency in some way and we could not reach the parents. Update this form through the office as phone numbers or other pertinent information changes.

FIELD TRIPS

Field trips are encouraged when they have an educational purpose. Parents will receive written notification of any field trips and will need to sign and return a permission slip. Bus transportation will be hired when there are enough students involved to warrant the expense. Otherwise, we will ask parents to help provide transportation. On an annual basis, field trip drivers need to provide the school office with a copy of their insurance card and driver's license.

LOCKERS

Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students use lockers to store their books and belongings. These lockers must remain locked! Students may add only shelving and a copy of their schedule to the interiors of lockers.

LOST AND FOUND

There are two Lost and Found sites in the building. Lost items can be claimed in the concession stand area or in the Lower Level hallway between the Parish Hall and the second grade classrooms. Unclaimed items will be collected at the end of each month and donated to Catholic Charities. Unclaimed school uniforms and sweatshirts will be used in the nurse's office.

LUNCH

Nutritious hot lunches are provided by the Olathe School District and prepared in Ascension's kitchen. Milk is included with hot lunch or may be purchased separately. Lunch and milk prices will be announced at the beginning of the school year and are based entirely on Ascension's cost. There is a $5.00 charge for each lunch card that needs to be replaced. This will occur when the card is lost or so damaged that it cannot be scanned. Each student has a lunch/milk account from which funds are deducted each time he/she eats hot lunch or buys milk. Parents should provide money for such accounts prior to the first day of school. Please check your child(ren)'s lunch balance regularly, and replenish funds before they are depleted. Balances are easily viewed on PowerSchool. If a lunch account drops to negative $10.00, someone from the school will call you with a courtesy reminder. You will need to provide sack lunches for your child(ren) until the balance covers lunch costs. If your child is coming in late and wants to order hot lunch, please make sure you call the school office before 8:30 A.M. to let us know. All orders must be placed by that time. Failure to call will require that you bring a lunch for your child. Children are welcome to bring their own lunches. Sack lunches should be nutritious and include a drink if not purchasing milk. Fast food or pop is not allowed. Please include napkins and plastic silverware as needed.

MONEY

When sending money with a child, please place the money in an envelope marked clearly with the student's name, grade, amount enclosed, and purpose. Please do not send extra / loose money with your child to school for any reason.

SCHOOL CLOSINGS

If it becomes necessary to close school because of snow, ice, flooding, etc., an announcement will be made on major television and radio stations indicating that the Catholic Schools of Johnson and Wyandotte Counties have been closed. As a general rule, Ascension will not dismiss school early. We will also contact parents through a School Reach telephone call.

TELEPHONE

Students are not allowed to use the phone in the office unless a teacher has given permission. They may not call home for forgotten assignments. Students are not allowed to use cell phones or pagers anywhere on the school premises, during field trips, or after hours during school-sponsored activities.

WEATHER & RECESS

Students go outside for recess unless the actual temperature is at or below 15° F or the wind-chill is at or below 0° F.

SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL

The School Advisory Council is composed of nine appointed voting members from the parish and the following non-voting members: the pastor, the principal, the assistant principal, a teacher representative, a PTO representative, and the past advisory council chairperson. The Council shall advise the principal and pastor on all matters concerning the internal operation of the school and its policies and procedures in order to ensure the best possible religious and academic education. The Council facilitates communication among the school, parents, and the parish and participates in long range planning for the school. The Council is advisory only and may not reverse a decision based on correct procedure as stated in the bylaws. As in all things the pastor remains the final authority in matters of policy in consultation with the principal.
