Activation is a leading provider of bespoke interactive training

Founded in 2001, we work both nationally and internationally, in the private and the public sector offering clients innovative training and development solutions. Our services include roleplay, forum theatre, bespoke script writing and performance, and the design and delivery of training programmes.

Leadership with Professor Malcolm Higgs has been published as a Henley Working Paper. Michael is continuing his research into charismatic leadership whilst consulting on Leadership, Communication and CSR, coaching in presentation skills and writing comedy. He is a member of BAFTA and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

natalie dagnall

Natalie is a qualified lawyer and has worked in both the private and public sector including Banking, Mobile and Internet Technologies, Merchandising, Insurance, Professional Services, Transport and Mining. Her expertise ranges from strategic development, advice and project management to coaching, training and facilitation. Natalie focuses in the areas of performance management and coaching, diversity, conflict management and stress and energy initiatives. Natalie holds a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, a Diploma in Industrial Relations from Wits Business School, a Certificate in Life Coaching from Newcastle College and has been a guest lecturer and speaker at numerous universities and conferences.

paul gilmore

Paul formed Activation in 2001. He comes from both a business and dramatic background having first obtained a BA (Hons) in Accounting & Finance before going onto drama school to study acting. Having worked as a professional actor for 15 years in TV Theatre and Film, Paul has transferred his skills as an actor and director into the corporate world, and has designed and delivered numerous drama based training programmes for a wide range of clients and training needs. He strongly believes that training which utilises and incorporates skills practice is the most effective way to bring about sustainable change.

michael hobbs

Michael is an actor, writer, academic and television producer specialising in factual entertainment. As an actor he has appeared on television and stage and presented a children's series for the BBC. He has written and produced programming for the BBC, Channel 4 and Five. After completing an MBA at Henley Management College and winning The Evening Standard Scholarship, his research on Charismatic

james traeger

James Traeger is recognised as a leading specialist in facilitation and coaching with particular emphasis on workplace diversity and leadership. He ensures that people recognise the impact of their behaviour on colleagues, customers and the whole organisation. He has been developing his own consultancy practice since 1991. He is also known as the developer of `Navigator', a unique personal development-training programme for front-line employees. It is being delivered internationally in both private and public sectors. Chicago-based Business Week magazine described him as `teaching the right stuff'. He is a member of the School of Management at the University of Bath.

gregg harris

Gregg has worked as a consultant for over 10 years, designing and delivering training both in the public and private sectors. His client list covers a broad spectrum of professions and levels from blue to white collar and above. Two of his training courses have been nominated for an `Arts in Business' and the Government's `Lifelong' training awards. He has, and does work in every major Industry field - Finance, Pharmaceutical, Retail, Manufacturing, Utilities & Legal etc. He originally trained as an Actor; his performing career covered every medium (including a stint as a `stand-up'!). Bringing people together to share learning

Live theatre provides a uniquely powerful means of communication

We work with a major international drinks company on their graduate recruitment programme. Our brief was to provide competency based exercises as well as an element of the WOW factor! Activation devised and delivered a series of exercises incorporating actors: a group exercise in which candidates work in a team and explore various situations and outcomes, and a one on one role-play which focuses on a candidates verbal, reasoning and negotiation skills. Warm up exercises for candidates and assessors as well as fun energisers to keep spirits high were also thrown in! The centres have been running with our involvement now for four years and have proved to be highly successful and enjoyable for both candidates and assessors. Working with an experienced Diversity trainer we delivered a one-day interactive workshop to a major CPG company that explored diversity and cultural difference. Two scenarios were acted out, the first looking at cross cultural and cross border difficulties, and how working cross culturally has issues that need to be dealt with carefully and sensitively; and the second, addressing issues around gender, family responsibility, bullying & harassment. Both scenarios provided opportunities for hotseating and forum theatre.

coaching skills

A large professional services firm recognised underperformance as being an issue within the organisation and Activation provided role-players for a series of interactive skills practice sessions that enabled managers to receive interpersonal skills training and practise the delivery of constructive feedback. Role-play provided participants with the opportunity to practise their interpersonal skills in a risk free environment, and share learning. These skills practice/coaching sessions provided invaluable input and feedback and helped develop self-confidence for the delegates. Coaching has now become an integral part of the company culture.

conflict management

1. We were commissioned by a leading management consultancy to work with them on delivering workshops to a large city investment bank, which explored conflict management in the workplace. Working from scripted scenarios we enacted characters derived from Thomas-Kilman conflict styles to mirror those present in the organisation. We presented a number of scenarios covering a range of relevant issues and used forum theatre to enable the participants to explore different approaches and share learning. The participants left feeling confident in their abilities to deal with any future `encounters'... Life can have a rehearsal! 2. Working with a PR agency on behalf of one of their major clients, a large multi national pharmaceutical company, Activation took part in a Global Communication Planning Event to prepare some leading executives in dealing with `activists'. We presented a number of scripted scenarios covering a range of relevant issues and used forum theatre to enable the participants to explore different approaches and share learning. The participants left feeling confident in their abilities to deal with any future `encounters'... Life can have a rehearsal!

customer service training

Barclays bank held a team event day for leading members of IT. Activation were asked to deliver a session that explored customer service and the importance of `every customer counts'. As we were to kick start the day, the client wanted the session to be fun and interactive. We provided them with a 2-hour workshop led by one of our trainers, ably assisted by two actor/facilitators working from scripted role-plays and using forum theatre to engage the participants. The actors also mingled with guests beforehand providing them with a taste of `poor' customer service, much to the alarm, but ultimately, amusement of the participants. The session was very well received and was successful in raising the importance to the team of `every customer counts'. corporate show

We delivered a corporate show for a large international accountancy firm. It consisted of a trip to Paris, as a part of their annual conference, to present a 40-minute live digital theatre show. The show was mixed media, with live and pre-recorded actors telling the story of a vision for the future. The aim of which was to fire up conference delegates and get them to think about how they could make this vision of their organisation become reality. It was very successful and very well received.

diversity & equal opportunities training

We have worked with a consultancy delivering diversity training to Hackney Council. The training looks at diversity issues in the workplace and we have performed scripted scenarios around sexual discrimination, race relations and disability. Using actors and scenarios has proved to be a highly effective way of raising some of the sensitive issues and delegates have found them a stimulating platform for discussion and learning. We use forum theatre and hot seating of the actors to involve the audience. Activation can provide you with actors, role-plays and scenarios to enhance your diversity-training programme or we can offer a complete diversity-training programme working with our experienced associates. performance management

Lloyds TSB held a branch network conference for all its area and local directors, looking at the business and future growth. Activation took part in a number of workshops exploring performance management. Two teams of well-briefed actors played out various scenarios between relevant parties within the bank where performance management issues arise. Using forum theatre and facilitated discussion, the audience became very involved in the interactions and feedback was excellent. influencing skills

We were asked by a consultancy specialising in working with managers in the NHS to provide role-play support for an influencing and assertion skills workshop. Examining different behavioural styles, the morning session consisted of the two actors playing out a number of improvised situations relevant to the audience and taking feedback on how best to resolve the issues. The afternoon was made up of dividing the participants into two groups and each actor facilitating a session exploring issues `personal' to the participants.

At Activation we firmly believe that live theatre provides a uniquely powerful means of communication. The intensity of the live theatrical experience can have a profound influence on performers and audience alike. Throughout history, theatrical performances have provoked extreme reactions and been at the forefront of communicating radical ideas. The operas of Verdi inspired revolutionary crowds to take to the streets. More recently, Czech audiences made their way in secret to witness the plays of the dissident playwright Vaklav Havel. Listen to the conversations of an audience leaving a theatre and you will hear people inspired to debate and exchange ideas. Live theatre, when done well, is quite simply more involving than any other means of communication. What we are offerving you is the opportunity to harness the communicative power of live theatre. Of course, we are not suggesting that you will wish to turn your employees or customers into revolutionaries, ready to storm the barricades and overturn governments. You may however, wish to inspire their enthusiasm and energy. You may wish to stimulate debate around certain issues. You may wish to offer them a vision of a possible future.
