Leading the transformation towards knowledge- based economy

During the past years the United Arab Emirates has paid considerable attention to provide the requirements necessary for the transformation of the national economy to a knowledge based economy. This due attention has manifested in the large number of initiatives by the Government to translate this ambitious economic project to reality. The requirements, which the Government is striving to meet, include among other things the development of the educational system, establishmeat of an advanced information technology infrastructures, promotion of the knowledge based society and updating of the legal frameworks conducive to the development of the business sector. Through out the history of UAE, education has always been a subject that is very dear to the hearts of our rulers and the goal for which they have always exerted utmost efforts to achieve. It is enough in this regard to recall the words of the Late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who said: "The real wealth of an advanced nation lies in its people, especially the educated ones, and the prosperity and success of the people are measured by the standard of their education". Within this context, Abu Dhabi Emirate launched through the Emirate Economic Vision 2030; a developmental process to upgrade and improve the standards of the educational system in the Emirate. The developmental project aims at laying down the pillars of the knowledge based society, self actualization and intellectual development within a comprehensive vision of our wise leadership which looks to the education as the most important foundation for realization of the society and economic development in the Emirate. Realizing the transformation, development and high quality of the educational sector requires close cooperation and fruitful partnerships with colleges and universities of the highest standing throughout the world. This cooperation and partnership with the highest standing international educational institutions constitute a fundamental goal of the Emirate Economic vision 2030 for the improving and upgrading of the educational system and the skills of the students. Achieving a knowledge-based and competitive economy needs concentration on three main axes at the top of which comes the increasing of the percentage of the UAE workforce. This goal could not be achieved without the upgrading the skills and capabilities of the UAE manpower in the economic sector through development of the educational sector for producing outstanding graduates that fill the needs of the labor market particularly the high value sector. It also requires promotion of the scientific research policy in both sides; research-forknowledge at the universities and higher colleges and research-for-action at the production facilities in line with the economic priorities to contribute in finding the building blocks of a comprehensive teamwork of researchers in the main scientific fields. ADNOC as a pioneering and a leading company for the transformation in the UAE community strongly believes in the UAE potentialities to achieve the strategic vision for a diversified knowledge-based economy. It also believes that the desired transformation will be led by qualified UAE cadres capable of confronting the current and future challenges and secures a lasting prosperity for our national economy. Building upon its strong belief in securing UAE potentials and resources and its role as a pioneering company in bringing about the desired transformation, ADNOC continues efforts and initiatives to develop the national educational system. For that end, ADNOC keeps on opening more research, academic and educational institutions adding more value to its educational system which comprises a number of successful educational institutions. The establishment of new educational institutions and the expansion of the services of the existing entities to provide educational services in different parts of the Emirate depending on advanced academic and learning models. In doing, ADNOC takes into account the models which satisfy the individual needs in one hand and on the other meets the economic and social needs of the society to constitute the foundation upon which knowledge based economy is not only in UAE, but also for the world. The role of ADNOC is no longer confined to the exploration and production operations in the oil and gas sector as it has expanded and promoted its role for the effective involvement in all social activities within the context of its corporate social responsibility. Within this context ADNOC continues to provide comprehensive educational, health, environmental and social services because ADNOC has strong belief that it constitutes an integral part of the UAE society fully interacting and communicating with all its constituents because the development of ADNOC is in turn a development for the UAE society.

H.H.. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler`s Representative in the Gharbia Region, inaugurated in September the new campus of Glenleg School- Abu Dhabi (GSAD) in Maidnat Zayed in the Gharbia which comprises the elementary stage up to grade 5. While inaugurating the new campus which accommodates 681 students. Sheikh Hamdan hailed the educational march in the UAE and the President>s keenness to put education among the top priorities of the national development. to create an environment conducive to educational excellence in the Emirate as part of achieving Abu Dhabi Vision 2030

He alluded the great support extended by the UAE wise leadership to all educational institutions both in the public and private sectors citing the wise vision of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan, the founder of UAE, who opened the doors of education before UAE citizens and who spared no efforts for the development and progress of UAE. He further lauded efforts and contributions of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) in the comprehensive development of the Western Region in general and the academic and technical education

praising the distinguished quality of education offered by Glenleg Schools. Sheikh Hamadan was accompanied by H.E. Abdullah Muhair Al Kutabi, the Undersecretary of the Ruler's Representative Diwan in the Western Region, and H.E. Sultan Bin Khalfan Al Rumaithi, Director of the Office of the Ruler's Representative in Gharbia. His Highness was received by Mr. Mohammed S. Al Qubaisi Chairman of Glenleg School Board of Trustees ADNOC's Human Resources and Admin. Director, Mr. Awaidha Murshed Al Murar, Director of Shared Services Directorate at ADNOC, Mrs. Rashida Al Nashif, Headmaster of Glenleg SchoolAbu Dhabi, a number of the teaching and administrative staff, officials of the educational sector and the parents. Sheikh Hamdan was briefed by the officials of ADNOC's Shared Services Directorate on the facilities, equipment and educational aids available to the

students and the teaching staff. He also toured the classrooms, laboratories, library and the sport facilities at the new campus and got acquainted with the state-of-the-art equipment provided for the students. While touring the facilities of the new campus, Sheikh Hamdan met with the teaching staff and the students and exchanged with them cordial remarks which reflected the good educational background and distinguished skills of the students. He also listened to a poem read by on of the students celebrating sheikh Hamdan visit and the inauguration of the new campus. Sheikh Hamdan hailed the modern facilities and educational aids available at the school expressing thanks to the school management and calling upon them to exert their utmost to serve the educational sector. He further applauded the curriculum and the program of instruction

offered by the school based on the latest educational systems in the world and the conductive educational environment provided for students which have positively reflected on their personality and their love for learning. He underscored the need to provide education of the highest quality to the UAE students to achieve a brighter future the UAE. On his part Mr. Mohammed S. Al Qubaisi Chairman of GSAD Board of Trustees and ADNOC's Human Resources and Admin. Director, expressed and appreciation for H.H.. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan kindness in inaugurating the new campus praising His Highness concern with the development of education in the Gharbia. In the press remarks he gave following the inauguration of the GSAD new campus, Mr. Al Qubaisi reviewed ADNOC's efforts and initiatives in the educational sector. He pointed out

that the Glenleg School of Abu Dhabi which was founded in 2008 by Abu Dhabi National Oil Company is one of the educational entities and is part of ADNOC educational family of learning institutions including the Petroleum Institute, ADNOC Technical Institute and ADNOC Achievers Oasis Program. "The inauguration of the new campus of GSAD in the Gharbia comes with the keenness and continuous follow up of H.E. Abdulla Nasser Al Suwaidi ADNOC'S Director General to open more campuses in different parts of Abu Dhabi Emirate" he said adding that "a new campus of Glenleg School ­ Abu Dhabi was inaugurated in Ruwais and will soon be followed a new campus in Gyathi in 2012". The GSAD is a new educational intuition and a great scientific entity to be added to the pioneering educational institutions established by ADNOC, he said pointing out that this contribution reflects the far sighted vision of our wise leadership and the great support they offer to the educational sector.

The GSAD in Madinat Zayed has stateof-the-art facilities which consists of biology, chemistry and physics laboratories equipped to university level. In addition to Computer labs, wireless communications networks, art and music facilities with video production technology, auditorium and well resources libraries

He pointed out that the GSAD was formed to create and conduct a challenging and rigorous secondary academic curriculum and program for Emirati and other highly qualified pupils. "Our aim is to foster independent learners, skilled communicators and inquiring students who are willing to challenge the accepted and move into unknown." He said adding the GSAD provides its students all the education and counseling tools and seeks to achieve quality in all fields of education and learning. Reviewing the educational entities and programs sponsored by ADNOC he hailed success of the Achievers

Oasis Program established in 2002, in motivating young nationals to join ADNOC's Petroleum Institute where they could join ADNOC and its Group of Companies' scholarship program in the fields of engineering, exploration, production and management. He said that the total number of the students under the program has reached 1500 students. On her part Mrs. Rashida Al Nashef the GSAD Headmaster said that the number of the total number of the students in all campuses reached 3831 of which 2420 are studying in Abu Dhabi, 730 in Ruawis and 681 in Madinat Zayed.

ADNOC reorganizes some directorates and divisions

The new decisions are cited hereunder: Within the context of the continuous efforts being exerted by Abu Dhabi National oil Company (ADNOC) to upgrade performance through reorganization of Directorates and Divisions H.E. Abdulla Nasser Al Suwaidi Director General of ADNOC issued a number of decisions. The new decisions provide for reorganization, renaming and restructuring of the organizational hierarchy of some Directorates and Divisions. H.E. Abdulla Nasser Al Suwaidi ADNOC's Director General has issued a decision appointing Mohammed Butti Al Qubaisi as Director of Exploration and Production Directorate with effect as from July 19, 2011. Meanwhile, H.E. also passed a decision establishing a new Directorate for the Corporate Planning and Coordination. According to the circular, the new Directorate will be reporting to the Director General. The Decision named Mr. Ali Khalifa Al Shamsi as Director of the Corporate Planning and Coordination Directorate CP&C with effect as from August 1, 2011 The roles and responsibilities of the CP&C at this stage will include corporate planning, health, safety and environment as well as following up and coordination between ADNOC and Supreme Petroleum Council Authorities, external relations and Director General Office. Further roles and responsibilities as per the decisions will be specified at a later date. The decision comes as part of ADNOC's keenness to upgrade administrative organization and to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of performance in line with the best international practices in this regard Meanwhile as part of the reorganization program H.E. Abdulla Nasser Al Suwaidi ADNOC Director General issued a decision introducing some changes to the organization and functions of the Shared Services Directorate. The new decision renamed the Group Risk Management Division to Group Risks Management Department reporting directly to the Procurement Division Manager. The decision appointed Ms. Sameera Al Suwaidi as Manager of the Procurement Division. As part of the on going efforts to establish and maintain a climate favorable to the development of harmonious and effective relationship between the company and its employees and amongst the employees themselves. ADNOC Management decided to constitute an Employee Grievance Committee. According the circular the new Committee will comprise: Mr. Mohammed S. The Employee Grievance Committee will be responsible for taking action on the employee grievances as per approved Human Resources Policy and raise recommendations to the Director General for critical cases. Director General visits PI

H.E. Abdulla Nasser Al Suwaidi Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) Director General and Chairman of the Petroleum Institute (PI) Board of Trustees stressed the company and its group's commitment toward the development, training and qualifying of national human capital. His excellency emphasized this would be achievable through supporting

academic institutions and offering related programs to national students highlighting the importance of keeping pace with academia's latest schemes in meeting the requirements of the oil, gas and renewable innovations in all sectors. H.E. Al Suwaidi's remarks came amid his visit to the PI where he was received by Mr. Abdul Munim Al Kindy, CEO

of Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Operations (ADCO) & board vice chairman, Mr. Rashid A. H. Al Zaabi, Manager of Public Relations Division in ADNOC, Mrs. Hamda Al Muhairbi, Manager of Human Resources at the PI and a number of managers, administrators and PI faculty members. H.E. Al Suwaidi made visits to various PI premises such as the Habshaan

Building, the institute library and laboratories. His excellency toured the female students' Arzanah Building where he hailed the rising number of UAE women in the total workforce and confirmed the keenness of ADNOC & its Group of Companies to continuously qualify UAE women by supporting and providing them with the academic training programs since women take part in development and progress. During his exellency's tour, he received briefs and summaries about the PI various activities and specialties and the institute future ambitious plans. His excellency reaffirmed ADNOC & its Group of Companies' readiness for providing all possible support the PI need. ADNOC & its Group of Companies are always ready to provide vocational training for PI students, males and females alike. H.E. Al Suwaidi underlined the necessity in keeping up with academic curriculums and the needs of the job market. He highlighted the continuous rising need for engineering graduates, from all disciplines; to meet today's contemporary economical, social and cultural fast-pace of life that the UAE has been witnessing. H.E. Al Suwaidi's visit comes in reflection to ADNOC's vision toward the importance of education and in line with its continuous support to Academia in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the rest of the UAE. His visit was to consolidate communication bridges and channels between ADNOC & its Group of Companies and its academic institutions. The PI was inaugurated in 2000, as a university equivalent institution, offering Bachelor degrees in various engineering curriculums such as petroleum, chemical, electrical, mechanical and oil fields engineering. In addition, the PI offers Master degree as well. The PI launched its postgraduate studies program in 2007.

Calling upon ADNOC Group to achieve the Goal of Incident Free - Operations

ADNOC reaffirms the group commitment to HSE principles

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) reaffirmed its commitment to protect health and safety of its employees and all contractors working with the Group and to safeguard the environment in which it carries out its business operations. The remarks were made by His Excellency Abdulla Nasser Al Suwaidi, ADNOC's Director General to ADNOC to the Group's partners. H.E. further stressed that ADNOC's firm commitment to HSE will remain stronger than ever. ADNOC expects its Group Companies to keep abreast of safety of the personnel and protection of environment in all their decisions to ensure overall sustainability in their business he said. He further added that "it is vital that the risks in our operations are proactively identified, evaluated and addressed in a manner that protects the health and safety of all personnel at our work sites including those of our communities in which we operate, striving to minimize pollution and preserving biodiversity." He strongly stressed that ADNOC will always adhere to the code of practice, procedures, standards, guidelines governing HSE issues affirming that ADNOC will never comprise HSE issues while conducing its business activities. He pointed out that commitment to safety will achieve the highest standards of performance and will ensure continued improvement. He expressed hopes that all ADNOC Group will rededicate themselves to the strict implementation of HSE policies and procedures in order to achieve the goal of incident free operations. ADNOC is committed to minimizing the adverse environmental impact of its operations. ADNOC Group companies report environmental performance against established ADNOC Strategic HSE Objectives, which are based on international aspirations for environmental management and aimed to bring ADNOC HSE performance on par with international best practices Environmental protection is also one of the values ADNOC promotes within the company and in local communities through activities that become part of our daily lives. It includes activities such as recycling, planting mangroves and cleaning beaches and public parks. One of the key corporate strategies is the pursuit of innovative research and technologies to minimize environmental impact of petroleum operations. This is done through monitoring of atmospheric emissions, desulfurizing crude oils, switching to cleaner fuels, making smokeless flares, treating wastewater and other such technologies that have broader applications in petroleum industry. ADNOC's commitment to its HSE policy is well demonstrated by its firm approach to HSE Impact Assessment (HSEIA) study for all new projects including the existing facilities.

ADNOC wins an Award & earns Five Honoree Medals in the Stevie International Business Awards

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has won an international Stevie Award and earned five honoree medals in the 2010 International Business Awards in six respective business activities. Nicknamed the Stevie for the Greek word "crowned," the eighth edition of the awards ceremony, where trophies and medals will be distributed, is due to be presented to honorees at a gala event on October 11 in the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi. Winners were selected from more than 3000 entries received from organizations and individuals in more than 50 nations. The competition took place under 40 business categories. ADNOC has received a Stevie Award in the category `Environmental Responsibility Program of the year in the Middle East & Africa' for ADNOC Distribution's Green Fuel Initiative. Meanwhile and in the same category, ADNOC has earned two Distinguished Honoree medals for Ruwais Fertilizer Industries (FERTIL)'s Carbon Dioxide Recovery Project and TAKREER Research Center. In the category `Company of the Year ­ Energy', ADNOC earned an Honoree medal for Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO)'s commitment for best practices and standards. In the category `Turnaround Executive of the Year', which was represented by Abu Dhabi Gas Industries Ltd. (GASCO), ADNOC has earned an Honoree medal as well. And representing ADNOC as well, Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations (ADCO) has earned a medal in the category `Best New Product or Service of the Year: Computer Software-Software as Service'. Mohammed S. Al Qubaisi, Director of Human Resources and Administration at ADNOC, said: "The receiving of ADNOC and its Group of Companies for such Awards and medals is considered a new additional achievement." Receiving and earning awards on environment responsibility program came as an outcome of continuous dedication and commitment toward the environment & its sustainability. "Awarding and honoring ADNOC in various categories reflect the company and its group's vision and mission toward achieving excellence in work and performance," added Al Qubaisi. Honorees were determined through two rounds of judging by close to 200 professionals and experts world wide. "Entries to the International Business Awards grew by more than 88%, and that illustrates the increasing importance of the IBAs world," said Michael Gallagher, President of the Stevie Awards, presenters of the IBAs. "We congratulate all of the honorees, and we look forward to recognizing them for their achievements at our gala event in Abu Dhabi on October 11."

Relating The Educational System Output With The Industrial Sector Needs

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Western Region Development Council WRDC and High College of Technology ­ Ruwias and Madinat Zayed Colleges - concluded on October a cooperation agreement. The agreement provides for close cooperation and coordination between the parties to link the industrial sector needs of manpower with the educational programs offered by the institutions of higher education to fill the gap between the job vacancies and the need for fresh students. The agreement was signed by Mr. Mohamed Ibrahim Al Hosani, Director of Regional Development for the WRDC, Mr. Mohammed S. Al Qubaisi Human Resources and Admin., Director for ADNOC and Dr. Phil Quirke Director of HCT Madinat Zayed and Ruwais Colleges in the presence of Mr. Fahed Salem Al Kayoumi, Director of Strategy

& Finance Division at the WRDC and Mr. Obaid Khalfan Al Mazrouei WRDC Investment Promotion and Public Relations Division Director and a number of senior executives. The agreement provides for cooperation and close coordination between the WRDC and the higher education institutions in the Western Region to relate the outputs of the higher educational system in the Western region with the needs of the industrial sector from the manpower in light of our Wise Leadership guidance to provide all opportunities to enhance the national economy to accelerate the sustainable economic and social development in the Western Region. It also comes as translation of our wise leadership vision to ensure welfare of Al Gharbia citizens and offering them promising educational opportunities to continue their higher education

and fulfill their aspirations in academic disciplines needed by the labor market. On his part Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al Hosni Director of Regional Development for the WRDC said that this agreement translates the constructive cooperation between the WRDC and its strategic partners. It also strengthen the joint cooperation between the concerned departments on one hand and the educational and recruitment institutions on the other hand to bridge the gap between the educational programs and labor market needs he said adding that this agreement will help in providing more employment for the fresh graduates which consequently contributes to the development, rehabilitation and preservation of skills in Al Gharbia. The human resources occupy a prominent importance in all the WRDC programs and initiatives due to its

essential role in bringing about the economic and social development in the area he said. He pointed out that the WRDC is eagerly endeavoring to develop and rehabilitate the local manpower through our support and development initiative to empower the coming generations for the effective involvement and contribution in building our homeland pursuant to the guidelines of our wise leadership. Al Hosni further hailed ADNOC efforts and contribution in the development of the western region praising the support of ADNOC to all the developmental and educational programs launched in the area stressing that ADNOC is an important strategic partner of the WRDC in its endeavors to achieve its main goals. On his part Mr. Mohammed S. Al Qubaisi ADNOC Human Resources and Admin., Director welcomed the signing of the agreement with the WRDC stressing the important role of ADNOC Group in promoting the culture of corporate social responsibility and ADNOC sincere efforts to translate this responsibility into reality in Abu Dhabi in general and Al Gharbia in particular due to its rising importance

as the lifeline of the UAE economic development and the future investment destination. The signing of this agreement reflects ADNOC's commitment to support all social, educational, cultural and sport activities organized by the UAE society he said. He affirmed that ADNOC and its Group of Companies are looking forward to the development and rehabilitation of the UAE youth through the educational and training programs and the employment opportunities offered by ADNOC. ADNOC is working according to a comprehensive scientific strategy which addresses all the challenges of the Emirtization program he said adding that there are number of factors which affect the Emirtization of jobs which include among others the inconsistency between the outputs of the education systems and the needs of ADNOC Group of manpower. He went on to say that based on this fact ADNOC maintains good relation with the higher educational institutions to introduces them with the needs of ADNOC Group of manpower adding that ADNOC also established a number of educational institutions and training

programs which address the challenges of the labor market through the development and rehabilitation of UAE youth to meet the rising needs for the qualified manpower of ADNOC Group to ensure an effective contribution of the UAE manpower He pointed out that ADNOC and its group of Companies are actively involved in the development of the Western Region at all stages while applying the highest HSE international standards in their operations. Additionally, resources, vacancies and training opportunities are generously made available to citizens of the regions. Meanwhile Dr. Phil Quirke Director of HCT Madinat Zayed and Ruwais Colleges said that "I am very proud because today we have concluded an agreement with ADNOC and the WRDC to relate the output of the educational system with the labor market needs in the Western Region I hope this move will encourage other parties to enter into similar partnerships with the higher education institutions to accomplish the desired goals of development and rehabilitation of the manpower in the western region"

The students of ADNOC Technical Institute resume their studies at the start of new academic year in September 2011 which comes with a number of aspirations and challenges for both students and academic staff. ATI was established in 1978 as one of the main sources of manpower for the ADNOC Group of companies (OPCOs). Most ATI graduates are currently working in various plants and industrial sites of the ADNOC Group of Companies as Maintenance

Technicians, Operators, Supervisors and Managers. Thus, ATI plays an important role in achieving ADNOC goal of maximizing Emiratization in OPCOs. The current student population at ATI is about 700 in the Basic, Foundation and Technical Programs. However, due to rising demand for Technicians and Operators, ADNOC Management has recently decided to increase the new intake to 400 instead of 150 students annually.

Mr. Mohammed S. Al Qubaisi, Chairman of ATI Board of Trustees and ADNOC Director of Human Resourses & Administration, stated that ATI new campus in Al Shawamekh is now fully operational and development of the facility is continuing. He added that new buildings and new block of classrooms would be shortly constructed, allowing ATI to increase student intake, along with an indoor sports centre which will be of great benefit for student's physical, social and academic wellbeing.

He further added that ATI students will fully enjoy a modern training facility equipped with the latest technological innovations as well as a new library, student accommodation and sports facilities. Mr. Al Qubaisi reaffirmed that ATI would remain committed to the development of its programs in line with the educational standards drawn up in consultation with the end-user Operating Companies. He said this is particularly important this year as ATI accreditation with the Scottish Qualification Authority will be extended to include the Electrical Technician and Instrument Technician specializations, as well as the existing Mechanical Technician program. He noted that the ATI's first batch of graduates from the ATI/SQA joint award scheme have already completed their studies last July and will be receiving their international diplomas shortly. In this respect, Mr. Al Qubaisi congratulated ATI for being selected by the Scottish Qualification Authority as the best vocational training centre for the year 2010 and praised the efforts by ATI management to raise HSE awareness among ATI students and staff. Mr. Al Qubaisi confirmed that the ATI will continue to develop its cooperation with Cambridge University this year, and a Memorandum of Understanding has been drawn up for signature in the near future. He explained that this MOU could extend ATI's language testing remit to include the provision of testing services for other companies within ADNOC Group. He also pointed out that, in line with its policy to diversify and broaden its training programs to meet OPCO's requirements, the ATI signed a MOU with Schlumberger Middle East & Asia Learning Centre, Abu Dhabi. The memorandum has established a scheme of cooperation between the two institutes and Schlumberger will provide training courses to ATI students and technical instructors in areas of upstream

operations. Under this scheme, the ATI successfully organized- in collaboration with Schlumberger- a training course for 12 weeks for a group of engineers and technicians from the Crisis Management Team of the Supreme Petroleum Council, beside two other training courses at Schlumberger; one for semester 4 students and another for some of ATI technical instructors.

Technical College Program- which will offer technical instruction at ATI to secondary school graduates in line with ATI's commitment to graduating more operators and maintenance technicians to meet the increasing demands from OPCOs for such workforce. He also referred to the existing cooperation between ATI and Abu Dhabi Tawteen Council which sends candidates to ATI to attend the normal study programs before joining OPCOs. Mr. Al Qubaisi hailed the close partnership between ATI and eight local customers, who are all members of ADNOC Group of Companies as ATI is their primary source of operator and technician manpower. He added that the National Drilling Company (NDC) and Al Hosn Gas will soon join the list of ATI customers as new stakeholders. He concluded that the efforts to provide quality training at ATI and other petroleum centers in the country will pave the road for a greater number of UAE national youth to have prosperous careers in the oil and gas industry.

After treating 20,300 Tons of Waste Last Year BeAAT to establish Two New Natural Occurring Radioactive Material Units

The Central Environment Protection Facility (BeAAT) in Ruwais treated around 20,300 metric tons (MT) of waste it had received from various ADNOC Group Companies in 2010. BeAAT is planning to establish a Natural Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) Plant in parallel with the existing hazardous waste treatment plant, according to Mr. Rudiger B. Richter. The BeAAT facility is considered the first of its kind in the region with a waste treatment capacity of up to 24,000 MT per year and a recycling capability that reaches up to 1500 MT per year of crude oil waste. Amid a ceremony, which was held on

May 22 by Ruwais Refinery Division (RRD), that commemorated BeAAT first anniversary at the Ruwais Recreation Center, Richter said the facility is currently working to establish a new NORM waste plant to treat hazardous radioactive materials. "At present we are treating only chemo toxic wastes in BeAAT. The NORM plant is expected to be established in the coming few years," said Richter. He said BeAAT is also planning to set up a catalyst recycling plant to recycle catalysts in BeAAT. "This plant will facilitate the recycling of catalysts internally instead of sending them abroad for recycling."

BeAAT is considered to be an integrated waste management scheme, which was created for the safe treatment and disposal of hazardous wastes generated by ADNOC operating companies and subsidiaries, which aims at protecting human health and the environment. The objective of the establishment and operation of BeAAT is to enhance HSE best practices for achieving exemplary HSE performance in the region. BeAAT is designed to treat certain types of hazardous wastes. BeAAT operations amongst other things are governed by BeAAT Waste Transfer Protocol. Richter said the BeAAT facility successfully had treated about 20,300

MT of waste received from various ADNOC OPCO's in the first year of operation. Mr. Ali Mohamed Al Jaberi, RRD Manager, thanked all the staff for making such achievement possible and stressed on the importance of BeAAT for ADNOC & its Group of Companies in handling hazardous waste and consequently safeguarding the environment. This handling of industrial wastes takes place in line with human health and environment preservation and ADNOC HSE codes, local and federal laws in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the UAE, respectively, and rules of the United States Environmental Protection Agency that plays a strategic role in allocating safe scheme for the treatment of hazardous wastes. Since its inauguration in March 2010, BeAAT works in favor of the health and protection of the human being and so the environment. Wastes treatment and recycling operations comprise different units depending on the performed process. There are the Solidification unit that melts non-organic toxic wastes, the Centrifugation Unit that is to separate oil, water and solid layers from each

other in one process, the Thermal Desorption that thermally treats refineries' organic wastes, Combustion gets rid of highly-toxic materials and the Physical-Chemical treatment. There is the Mercury Distillation Unit that collects recovered Mercury from lamps and thin fluorescent pipes. ADNOC commissions more CNG filling stations

ADNOC Distribution is busy working on the completing of the fist phase of the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations and conversion project which has been launched last May through the opening of 6 CNG stations, raising the number of the this environmentally friendly fuel to 10 stations, 8 in Abu Dhabi and in 2 in Alin.

ADNOC Distribution is planning to open a number of CNG stations in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Sharjah to complete the project>s first phase which entails construction of 16 CNG filling stations in the first quarter of next year as part of a comprehensive plan for the current year to construct all services CNG stations in the state.

He added that ADNOC Distribution will open during the first quarter of next year the First CNG in the Emirate of Sharjah followed by additional two stations in different areas brining the number of the CNG stations in the Emirate to four stations. Preparations are underway to complete the second phase of the natural gas marketing project through construction and commissioning of 5 additional CNG stations in Abu Dhabi and Al Alin, he added. He further stated that ADNOC Distribution has commissioned a number of CNG station allover the Country pointing out to Al Sara CNG station in Um Alquain. "Around 1687 vehicles from the government fleet, ADNOC Group vehicles and taxi have been converted to run on CNG on the ADNOC Distribution conversion centers in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain" he added. He attributed the rising number of vehicles using CNG to the cheaper rates to customers and efforts being exerted by the company to encourage efforts of environment conservation and sustainable development pointing out that ADNOC Distribution has recently opened 5 conversion centers from the total number 9 centers planed to be opened. "In line with the plan and in implementation of the decision of Abu Dhabi Executive council which provides for conversion of 25% of the government vehicles to be run by CNG, ADNOC Distribution is working out a time table to covert the targeted number in full coordination with the concerned departments" he said. He further elaborated that the Company is in close coordination

with the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology has finalized the drafting and preparation of all regulations organizing the use of the CNG vehicles fuel. These regulations will be the reference to all vehicles which use CNG whether converted inside the state or those which are readily manufactured to run on CNG he added pointing out that the regulations will also define the components of the CNG fuel system. Speaking about the transportation network of the CNG product, he said that ADNOC Distribution has prepared a fleet to transport the CNG from the main station in Khalifa city (A) to the refilling stations all around the Emirates using six gas tanks specially designed and manufactured from the top quality stainless steel free of any welding works. The CNG transportation tanks are equipped with automatic systems for the loading and unloading operations he said adding that no loading or unloading operations are allowed until the vehicles reach a complete standstill. He went on to say that the CNG transportation tanks will be connected with the earthling wiring system at the stations during the

unloading operation to prevent any high voltage loads. Commenting on the safety of the CNG transportation tanks, he said that ADNOC Distribution is committed to implement the best international quality and safety procedures in all its operations and products in addition all our operations and products fulfill the regulations and requirements of the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology. Speaking about the the training and rehabilitation programs, he said that the training of employees to work on the CNG project is among the priorities of the company. "We have recently finished the training of 70 employees to work as supervisor and refilling workers in cooperation with the German Company BAUER the supplier of the natural gas compressor and stations," he added The training program covered a number of important axis including safety measures at the CNG filling stations, and methods and producers, which should be followed for supplying vehicles with CNG inside the filing stations in addition to problem solving and safe operation he added.

The disclosure of a piece of information or news story, when they are truly confirmed, depends on the privacy and public exposure for any organization or working environment," said Ali Rashid Al Jarwan, CEO of Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO). "Things do need time to change individuals' way of thinking in today's world. But we are cruising in the right path where we work shoulderto-shoulder with all our colleagues at ADMA-OPCO, ADNOC & its Group of Companies and sister academic institutions to further activate the mutual communication between with the media." opening of a Media Forum, which was organized by ADMA-OPCO, at a Ramadan night gathering on August 16. The objective of the forum was to rejuvenate communication channels between media and journalism outlets and oil, gas and energy sector companies in general, and ADNOC & its Group of Companies in specific. "We believe in the important role the media plays via its print, audio and visual channels in serving any society's components and colors," said Al Jarwan. But he stressed the big responsibility taken by media outlets that want to break any exclusive news story putting them in a lot of trouble and stripping them from any credibility when publicizing news related to a volatile sector as oil and gas. "During the past few years and before what to be perceived later on as the international economic crisis, we used to see many companies issuing daily press releases

to fill up the empty media landscape with news and distract people with issues that were exaggerated beyond normal senses. Many of these sectors suffered dramatically from that," added Al Jarwan. Seven national employees have completed their training successfully at Borealis Innovation Headquarters in Linz, Austria. The training week was an interesting learning experience for the trainees through which they acquired new skills, business ethics and knowledge and other significant approaches which helped them realize the importance of innovation and scientific analysis. The decision on UAE membership of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Company (OPEC) was one of the first major decisions taken by The Late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding father of the UAE when he decided that Abu Dhabi should join OPEC in 1967, barely a year after becoming the ruler. When the UAE was created in 1971, the new nation automatically joined the organization. This major decision reaffirmed the country>s sovereign rights addition to the UAE sovereign rights over its hydrocarbon resources, which has at a time when almost all oil production was in the hands of a small group of international oil companies controlling the quantity of oil extracted, managed how much was sold and to whom, and determined the price. The decision on the UAE Membership of OPEC paved the way for the creation of the Abu Dhabi National

Company (ADNOC) in 1971. It has effectively contributed to make ADNOC and its Group of Companies a leading oil and gas company playing a major role on the international level through the assistance it provides to the poor countries to overcome to the problems of underdevelopment. It has also reaffirmed the UAE commitment to secure steady supply of oil and maintaining the stability of the international oil market. The UAE membership in OPEC has achieved a number of goals on the long run at the top of which comes the strengthening of the role of ADNOC as a leading national oil company. It has also contributed to the expansion of the ADNOC's business activities during the last decades which led ADNOC to assume a remarkable position in the international oil industry. Since then, history has shown that the UAE has not been a passive member of OPEC. Out of the 156 OPEC ministerial

conferences held to date, 25 have been held under the presidency of the UAE and two have been hosted in Abu Dhabi. Furthermore, the UAE has provided two secretaries-general over the past half century. Following the elapse of the 1960s the period during which OPEC members have reaffirmed their sovereign rights over their hydrocarbon resources, OPEC underwent a number of important transformational stages. OPEC developed a collective vision working not only for the benefits of its members, but for the wider good of consumers and the planet. OPEC became a mature organization working for realization of its own goals according to an oil policy of the member states which affirms the legitimate rights of the member states to exert their sovereign right over their natural resources according to their own national interest. for the development and stability of the international economy. This sincere call has led to the foundation of OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) in 1976. Under this fund, OPEC member states started to launch ambitious developmental projects fort the benefit of the international community. During the last years, OFID has developed from modest beginnings as a temporary financial account, the institution has evolved into a mature and respected international development organization with a solid record of achievement in confronting problems of developmental backwardness and assistance to the developing states. In recognition of OFID's accomplishments on assisting states to achieve development and promotion of social development allover the world OFID has gained international appreciation. Over the past half century, the UAE role through OFID has proved itself to be effective reflecting the UAE commitment to exert utmost efforts to address the problems of development and prosperity allover the world. It also stands as evidence to UAE strong commitment to promote sustainable development, promote international cooperation to eradicate poverty and empower people to lead a better life. As OFID resources depend on the voluntary contribution made by OPEC member states in addition to the incomes from the Fund investments and loans the UAE support has always been generous and unlimited. The UAE continued to support OFID with fresh resources covering all the project and assistance programs run by the Fund taking into consideration that all developing countries, except OPEC's member countries, are eligible for assistance through OFID. OFID is granted Observer Status to the UN General Assembly and becomes entitled to involve on the international activities particularly those devoted to assist the developing states, poverty alleviate, epidemics control and relief efforts. The numbers of the Beneficiaries and Recipients of OFID assistance reached: 51 states in Africa 40 in Asia 27 in Latin America 4 in Europe By the end of November 2010 the number of grants provided by OFID reached 1015 grants worth of more than US$ one billion

After more than year since its inauguration, TRC a conducts various research, simulation tests and related experiments such as the production of Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel, dubbed `Green Diesel' at existing local refineries without the need for expensive equipment overhaul. TRC is also contributing to the development of the world's largest catalytic cracking unit (a type of refinery technology used to break down heavy crude oil components) through the design of pilot units, as well as equipment

and procedures for testing catalyst compounds. Since its launch, TRC has been actively collaborating with other research bodies, mainly the PI, on projects to develop new catalyst technology and process intensification or Modeling hydrodynamics and heat transfer in fluidized catalytic cracking reactors. This collaboration has been further strengthened by allocating laboratories to the PI at the center. TRC is equally committed to Ruwais refinery expansion. For the Residue Fluid catalytic Cracking (RFCC) Unit, the largest in the world, the center has worked on the design of new pilot plant units and on analytical equipment required for testing commercial as well

TRC was inaugurated in 2010 in the Petroleum Institute campus, which was considered the first phase of a three phase plan, that is due to be completed in 2018. The inauguration took place at the PI since it is considered one of the pioneering academic institutions that eye activities in the oil, gas and petroleum related sciences on the UAE

as in-house catalysts. Phase I, which is the current preparatory phase, includes the following two domains with corresponding tasks: First: Oil and Gas Process Study through process troubleshooting, process analysis conduction, process/ operational bottlenecks and dissolving them, operational/thermal efficiency check ups, energy conservation study and the conduction of technoeconomic studies. Second: Research that includes three areas; Catalyst Research, Pilot Plant and Analysis. Catalyst Research includes finding out problems of process catalysts, management of process catalyst performance,

catalyst screening, conduction of comparison evaluation studies and study replacement terms. Pilot Plant comprises the generation of scientific data for catalysts and catalyst testing. Analysis includes petroleum testing lab and gas & water lab. Phase II, which TRC is currently working on to complete by end of 2013 to early 2014, and Phase III, which is intended to be complete in 2018, combined will include two domains; process study that will comprise engineering, modeling & simulation, refinery performance enhancement, study of operation & process improvement, environment engineering, coordination & planning and investment study and research that will cover catalyst

research & management, pilot plant, analysis, products development and engine bench operation. TRC is also committed to the Emirati manpower development through internship programs that are offered to students from the PI and UAE University. "The center also focuses on training UAE national developees on basic requirements of research exposing them to an environment where they can learn more about research studies," said Dr. Abdelhakim Koudil, TRC Manager. Such training programs provide young Emiratis, males and females, an opportunity to participate and engage themselves in R & D to improve their creativity and innovation talents.

Plantation of 5 Million Mangrove Seedlings is due to complete by End of the Year 2011

The Supreme Petroleum Council (SPC) and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) jointly plan to complete the plantation of up to five million Mangrove seedlings in various locations across the offshore areas of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi by the end of the year. The plan comes in line with the vision of SPC and ADNOC in preserving the environment in the emirate and across the UAE.

SPC and ADNOC's plan is an emphasis to the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan' commitment toward the environment. The late Sheikh Zayed was recalled saying: "We cherish our environment because it is an integral part of our country, our history and our heritage. On land and in the sea, our forefathers lived and survived in this

environment. They were able to do so only because they recognized the need to conserve it, to take from it only what they needed to live and preserve it for succeeding generations.Six Mangrove nurseries have already been established. Accordingly, the project, which was planned and started few years ago, comes after the completion

of planting roughly more than 200,000 Mangrove seedlings across various offshore areas in the emirate. The offshore areas of the emirate are considered a birthplace of a uniquely distinct eco system, both regionally and internationally. Such areas accommodate and preserve various types and layers of coral reef

and sea grass. Such marine plants jointly contribute in the creation and preservation of a healthy balanced and attractive areas for endangered marine species from extinction such as Dugongs, Turtles and Fish, in addition to wide range of birds, whether those settled or migrating.

The SPC and ADNOC and its Group of Companies continue to jointly combine efforts that aim at preserving the environment against pollution and developing ecosystem of the emirate through enhancing the diversification of animals and plants.

In 2010, many initiatives and so projects were executed in that regard. Several coral reef restoration and rehabilitation projects were achieved. A construction center was established to build artificial reef structures in various shapes and sized, and accordingly, were deployed in 10 sites. An artificial reef site was also established by using modified concrete pipelines. In line with the objective of marine life and sea grass protection, two transplantation projects were initiated to intensify the presence and growth of sea grass and protect already settled Dugongs, turtles and fish. Abu Dhabi marine areas are the home of seven unique emergent salt plugs of outstanding global value that is expected to attract visitors worldwide. They represent major stages of Earth plant history including the record of early life and significant on-going salt diapirism affecting the development of present day landforms. Such areas are eligible for nomination in the World Heritage List.

More than 200 islands from various sizes, shapes and geological structure spread across the shores of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi coastline. These islands are considered of high value in terms of scientific research. They provide research experts and marine archaeologists with good background on the history of Planet Earth especially the era from the planet creation to the emergence and existence of animal life. The SPC and ADNOC & its Group of Companies and academic institutions continuously work together to come up and launch various initiatives and research projects on the preservation, development and expansion of such environment. The SPC and ADNOC's vision and mission come in line with the long term Abu Dhabi Vision 2030, where ecological consideration contribute strongly in the overall economy, urban development, education, health and so prosperity of the UAE.

The Petroleum Engineering Program plays a significant role in the Petroleum Institute's Academic vision and mission in specific and ADNOC & its Group of Companies in general. Despite changes that the oil and gas sector has been facing over the past few years, challenges related to the environment and demands to look into alternative sources for energy such as solar, winds and nuclear, oil and gas will remain important sources for energy for decades to come. Oil and gas will compose significant components in the production of wide range of fast manufactured consumer goods (FMCG) for humanity. However, visions and plans related to oil and gas have been taking new turns over the past few years to adapt to world wide changes in all sectors. To talk about it all, ADNOC News magazine met with Dr. Hemanta Sarma, Chairman & Professor of Petroleum Engineering Program (PEP) at the PI.

How do you evaluate the PEP at the PI today? I have worked at a wide range of university programs on oil and gas around the world. I have to say, honestly and transparently, that PEP at the PI has a high competitive ranking compared to similar programs at other universities world wide. The unlimited support from ADNOC & its Group of Companies play a strong role in asserting the PI status, whether locally, regionally and internationally, as a favored destination for students who want to pursue their studies in engineering and related sciences, especially in oil and gas disciplines.

How do you perceive the PE faculty at the PI?

The PI is located in the hub of all oil, gas and petrochemicals operations, activities, challenges and so solutions. Proximity is very important for students and faculty alike. Everything is close.

What sorts of factors contributed in distancing the PI from other similar academic institutions in the field of petroleum engineering (PE)? Location... Location... I have underline the issue of location. to

What are the main challenges that oil and gas studies face in today's world? The main challenges in oil and gas studies, everywhere, are the shortage in academic faculty. There are not enough PE instructors due to world markets' conditions. Though, when it comes to the PI, the institute currently has a program for undergraduate (Bachelor) and graduate (Master) degrees. We are currently studying prospects to proceed to having a PhD program as well, but this takes time. ADNOC has wide sponsorship opportunities for students who want to study abroad. However, we have to keep a balance between rising graduate applications and undergraduate studies. We are in regular communications with the PI Board, ADNOC & its Group of Companies and shareholders. We balance between expanding graduate studies, attracting and retaining excellent faculty and keeping student drop out rates to a minimum. What sorts of mechanisms do you conduct to motivate students?

I worked at other universities that had required a lot of time and procedures to go out with students on field trips. Though, the situation is totally different and unique. This enables students to have a real hands-on experience whether during the academic year or during the summer internship programs that students spend in working with ADNOC, one of its operating companies or shareholding companies. This is in addition to ADNOC unlimited support. Laboratories of the PEP or other engineering studies at the PI are a true reflection of the latest in terms of what technology can offer in this field. How involved PEP students at the PI in international activities? The PI is considered one of three university-oriented institutions in the world that grant certifications under the International Drilling Control Forum. PEP students at the PI enter into international competitions by submitting papers through the training programs and sessions they undergo at the institute. But evaluations of such papers take place abroad.

We have an excellent faculty team with outstanding professional, industrial and academic experiences in the oil and gas fields. PEP faculty composes a total of 14 professors. Through their backgrounds, they mix and adapt theories and practice. Two Emirati faculty members have joined recently that has contributed significantly to the program as well.

What about PE students' activities? The Society of Petroleum Engineers student association at the PI is considered among the best students groups at the PI. This is in terms of their participation, involvement and engagement in various social activities. How ready is the PI to be certified by the American Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET)? We are ready! We look forward to receive the visiting American delegation on this by end of October. We are very confident to receive their accreditation that will raise the PI status and reputation the different regional and international academic forums. This will inspire and boost PI faculty members and students alike. We deserve this and time has come to earn it!

Some universities around the world have separate programs for Gas from Petroleum, the PI does not, how do you explain that? True. However, when we say Petroleum Engineering, we implicitly mean and include Gas as well where most universities do world wide. In addition in the PI case, we provide extra studies

The PI Alumni plays a strong role in rejuvenating and activating communication channels among students after their finishing their studies at the PI. This is been done through a range of sports, social and annual gala dinners. However, there are no doubt, the PI needs stronger and more communication channels with the various media outlets. It is a need that any division, department or section that can be devoted to higher scale public relations, media and mass communications.

and courses on Gas engineering. Those universities that have separate programs probably do so due to some circumstances surrounding a certain university. Some universities share the same concept, but just have different names to their programs. We see it called the Oil and Gas Program and Petroleum and Metals in another university and so on. In that regard, we continuously have communications with leading universities in this field such as the Colorado School of Mines, Rice University in Houston and the University of Texas at Austin.

While studying, the PI continuously encourage students to get involved in social life in order to develop students' communications and interactions spirits with the community surrounding them. We encourage students to take part in volunteer work, activities, exhibitions and students forums to assert PI presence.

The PI will witness the expansion or inauguration of three research centers during the next two years, how much of a turning point this will have an impact on PI progress? With no doubt, this is very true. If all goes well as planned and anticipated, this will be like a magnet for all parties involved in terms of infrastructure, research and academic faculty, students, ADNOC & its Group of Companies and the oil, gas and

petrochemicals sectors. Research is like gambling. There are time where results are reached and sometimes nothing. The establishment for a fully integrated working environment that believes in such philosophy is very important in the success of such centers. We have to define what we are looking for; reach and achieve it whether in five, 10 or 15 years. There is a short, mid and long term visions to know what we are doing and why we are doing it for generations to come. There are have been calls to shift to pursue studies on the environment and alternative energies recently, so how do you see the future of studying PE? Studying Petroleum Engineering will continue to stay alive. With no doubt, the way PE has been perceived today is different from 20 or 50 years ago. Technology has changed and developed. Technology is contributing

side-by-side other available alternative energies to preserving the environment. Many oil reservoirs were discovered and so fields developed world wide, but the thing that many people do not know this roughly represents 20% of what has not been developed yet. Can someone imagine life without oil? Look at all FMCPs and what they are made of. They are all made a way or another from basic oil components. Final word... I hope the PI continues to be an excellent destination for oil and gas and related sciences prospect students. After graduation, I wish them a good personal and professional life. I hope they will be idols for others in terms of creativity and innovation in their society. As PI, we are good in what we do as PE and in what we try to present to the industry and so to the society as well.

Naser Ali Al Hajri:

Whether Offshore or Onshore.. Quality comes First

Mr. Naser Ali Al Hajri joined Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) in 2007. Since then, he has been an integrity specialist in the Onshore Division at the company's Exploration & Production (E & P) Directorate. Prior to ADNOC, Al Hajri had been working for eight years with Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA OPCO) where four of those years he spent them working at the Zakum Offshore field then later on at Um Sheif field. Al Hajri says: "Working at the offshore fields and also in Das Island have enriched the build up of my experience that I consider of high significance despite all challenges, especially those pertaining to tough weather and work demands." He joined the ADNOC Group following his graduation in 1999 where he received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines in Denver, Colorado in the USA. Amid his transfer to ADNOC after ADMA OPCO, Al Hajri started assuming his job tasks that are specially related to the activities of Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations (ADCO). Whether offshore or onshore, Al Hajri believes that a united concept for work is what relies on all sorts of evaluation, regular inspection for oil pipes and facilities, quality check ups and enforced implementation of all Health, Safety and Environment standards. The Onshore Division at E & P Directorate follows and studies all quality standards and measurements at the onshore fields, especially what is related to ADCO'S various activities and operations. Regular follow ups and check ups take place for the quality and validity of all used pipelines. Al Hajri's strongly expresses his belief saying: "We need to guarantee the availability and flow of crude oil in the pipelines." He adds: "If the flow of oil was erupted, this means a defect has taken place. This affects any company's reputation. In principle, we are keen to guarantee the flow of oil." Al Hajri stressed the importance of dual experience in the work of quality in the offshore and onshore fields in the oil, gas and energy sector.

"Safety First" is not merely a Slogan!

In the ancient time, there were only natural disasters. Now, we also have man-made crises. Natural disasters still happen, but their frequency and intensity lag far behind man-made catastrophes. Are we paying price of progress? Where did we go wrong? The human mind is said to have no boundaries. Using this power, we have made astounding progress in the fields of science and technology. From `making fire by rubbing stones' to `generating electricity through nuclear fission', we have come a long way. We have harnessed natural powers to make our lives more comfortable and productive. However, this has not come free. Every technological advancement has come with its own inherent risks, which we claim to manage effectively.

Modern cars are equipped with a load of safety features. Industrial plants are said to be built on fail-safe standards. We invest considerable amount of money in researching for the safest design. We study all the worst possible scenarios and claim to manage the risks as low as reasonably practicable through sophisticated safety systems. We develop stringent safety laws and standards. We set up inquiry commissions after every catastrophic incident and produce large volumes of investigation reports, which record pages after pages on the lessons learnt. But, are these lessons really learnt by human minds? Have we really stopped recurrence of similar failures? It was scary to read the following statistics in a recent report published

by Khaleej Times: · 3 people got killed on the road every minute, · $ 3 trillion is the cost of road crashes every year, and · 90% of road accidents happen due to human error. Broad analysis of major industrial incidents also reveals that 90% of them can be attributed to the underlying safety culture at a facility making it acceptable for someone to ignore or bypass some critical step. Increased automation and loads of safety features seem to create a false sense of safety. Statistics have shown that more people die at pedestrian crossings than the `jay-walkers', simply because people at

pedestrian crossings often assume that vehicles would stop and hence become less alert. In a 1996 essay about the Challenger disaster, Malcolm Gladwell observed that "We have constructed a world in which the potential for hightech catastrophe is embedded in the fabric of everyday life." Having built systems with thousands of interacting components, we cannot possibly foresee all the ways they will behave under all circumstances, some of the circumstances themselves being unforeseeable. Although we try to reduce inherent risks of any operation through safer design and/or operating procedure, human tendency is to consume this riskreduction either by being aggressive in its usage or by being complacent with its false sense of safety. Higher the automation and sophistication, lower seems to be the human alertness. A machine can always be expected to perform as per its specifications. But, a human being cannot be expected to perform at its peak all the time. Emotions tend to greatly influence our actions. Even a competent person may fail under adverse emotions. While

continuous training, knowledgeupgrade and competency assessments are important, taking care of emotional health is perhaps the most important factor in any safe operation. The human mind must remain motivated on the job. This, perhaps, is the single most critical responsibility of every team leader. A happy employee will always keep your clients happy. We retain those lessons the longest, which we learnt through our own personal experiences. All other lessons we tend to forget after a short while, as our information-memory is short. This problem is further compounded by the lack of corporate memory due to which new employees often lack the benefits of lessons learnt by their predecessors. It is, therefore, necessary to convert such lessons in some form of personal experiences such as real-life simulations, rather than mere documented information. And, they should be repeated at regular intervals so as to become part of our spontaneous behaviours. How we harness nature's power is perhaps a more fundamental question.

In ancient China, they say, when a master carpenter wanted to make a chair; he would go out to the forest asking which tree was willing to be cut for this purpose. The chair made out of such a tree lived for several decades without any degradation. Guiding a wild river from the mountains through barren lands spreads greenery and prosperity for generations. Consuming only those resources that we need for our day-to-day living would always leave enough resources for everybody on the earth. Nature likes to nurture harmony in everything. Any attempt to disturb this harmony will sooner or later result in serious backlash. Nature has strange ways of striking a balance. Human intervention, however optimised, will always remain vital for any safe operation. Let "Safety First" not be a mere slogan. Next time, you step out to drive a car or operate a machine, check your emotion-meter for stability, expect the unexpected and pull out your attention-antenna all the way up.

The UAE's Oil the Bounty and the dreams of Sheikh Zayed

The history of crude oil in the UAE has just been an exciting story to tell and to share. Oil has always been the nations' development driving force which the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, May Almighty Allah rest his soul in peace, had laid its foundation with a sharply long term vision. In the old days when natural resources were scarce, the late Sheikh Zayed was working and devoting his time and efforts searching into resources that would construct a nation and build its people. The late Sheikh Zayed had a big dream ­ as big as the space between the Earth and the sky. He was aware that resources were barely there. Though, he had not been giving up looking. He remained committed and faithful to Allah. When primal excavation and exploration operations had started, the late Sheikh Zayed was himself following up the operations and accompanying the experts and specialists in their exploration tours at an age of 26 years old. It was the he realized that Allah was hiding this fortune in the core of this Earth. He was waiting for that right moment to dig and extract it to break people's thirst from hunger, poverty, misery and so agony. He acknowledged that significance of oil at an early state of his life during his tours with the experts. It was out there and with them that he had projected and so outlined the framework for the future of his nation. It was that his big dreams were due to materialize into reality. For him, it was just putting it all into execution and that when the job had started... During an astonishing short period of time, the UAE has emerged as a major player in the global energy scene. Today, the UAE is considered one of the biggest oil and gas producers and exporters in the world. The UAE's current accessible crude oil reserves are estimated to be 100 billion barrels. At today's current production rates, the UAE has enough reserves that would sustain production for another 100 years. Oil is an amenity from Allah. The late Sheikh Zayed knew how to exploit and so utilize it for the welfare of the country and its people. Oil has been the core role of the overall development progress in the nation. In just four decades, the UAE has transformed into an economically prosperous nation on the world map. Today, the UAE is been recognized as one of the most diversely development countries in variety of sectors in the world. Development changes witnessed in the UAE were like fiction. The region's inhabitants, especially the Arabian Gulf, know about the existence of oil thousands years ago. However, they did not anticipate that such organic substance, which originates from the bottom of Earth, would gain such value one day. Despite the fact that the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and Persia had exploited, a way or another, the Asphalt residues, which were infiltrated from big depths were crude oil residing in close reservoirs to the surface of Earth. But such residues' value was of a secondary importance at the time. According to archaeologists, the Sumerians and Babylonians had allocated such reservoirs, but their exploitation was limited for the usage of basic daily life needs. However, for offshore oil residues, the situation was different. Residues, which were infiltrating from the bottom of the sea, would appear as small balls of Asphalt that sea waves throw toward the shorts where people use them to paint their pottery products. They were doing so to prevent the leakage of liquids. Archaeological excavations in the UAE revealed and proved that inhabitants living on the coastlines used to use Asphalt to paint their pottery products. Archaeological analysis revealed that amounts of Asphalt were found in the area of "Tal Ibrak" in the northern emirates that go back to the Iron Age. This shows that source of Asphalt was a crude oil spill that was laid there for sometime around the offshore areas adjacent to Southern Iran 2500 years ago. And time passes by. Yet, the human being has not realized the importance of oil and its value as a source of fuel until the emergence of the first industrial economies in the world. Prior to World War I (WWI), the world had been witnessing many search and exploration missions of crude oil in Iraq, Iran and northern areas of the Arabian Gulf. Such operations were taking place with oil-oriented technologies at the time. However, this had activated oil companies' appetite to come to the region alerting the world on the importance of the region for what it contains of fortunes under the ground. Along the years, mega multi-national oil companies emerged in the global oil scene such as Royal Dutch Shell, British Petroleum, Standard Oil Group and others. Such oil companies' interest in the region has been raising in the 20's of last century. Post WWI had brought the world's focus to the importance of oil as a fuel. At the time, a consortium of western oil companies was established to look for this important commodity in Iraq. The consortium was known as the Turkish Oil Company. After the war, the company became known as the Iraq Oil Company. The newly named company included shareholders from the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, which had become later on British Petroleum, and the Anglo Saxon Oil Company, which belongs to Dutch British Shell with French links that later on became the French Oil Company Total. Today, Total includes the merge of the original

company with elf of France and Fina of Belgium. There was Partex ­ a company owned by an Armenian businessman, named Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian who played a major role in winning a concession agreement and received a 5% commission. Since then, he has been known as Mr. 5 Percent.

Today, Partex is a Portugal-based Oil and Gas Holding corporation. Later on, American companies, Exxon and Mobil joined other players amid a joint American British agreement that was signed in 1925. This consortium remains in Abu Dhabi until today as shareholders in the oil concessions of

the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. Thus, the story continues since that was just part of it. Oil comprises the life nerve for various important sectors in the UAE as well as many other countries around the globe. Many countries have been relying on oil to the point they have started looking into alternatives amid rising fears from oil depletion. Despite scientific confirmations that the UAE oil reserves are enough to last for up to 100 years, the UAE has taken significant steps in investing in other non-oil-related sectors several years ago. Since then, the UAE has been taking a leading role in the look, exploitation and development of clean alternative kinds of energy. The UAE strongly believes that it lives the future as if it is the present. The UAE always looks forward with an enlightened long term vision. Scientist and experts see that the current global oil consumption, which stands at 3.5 billion tons per year, contributes in the depletion of most oil wells world wide. However, they believe Arab oil wells will continue their production as it was predicted in the case of Kuwait until the year 2100. The depletion of oil in many countries such as the USA, Scotland and Norway during the coming 30 years is expected to raise tensions among industrial nations in an attempt to keep a bigger share of the Middle East oil reserves. In response, this will put further pressure on oil prices forcing them to jump and accordingly benefit oil producing countries. In addition, this is expected to raise the scenarios of foreign interventions in these countries that may spark and cause political, economical and social instabilities. Analysts believe big powers in the world will be keen toward protecting their interests in such countries, so they will try to maintain these countries' stability and sustainability.

Oasis Program for Excellence reports 10% Rise in Students' Enrollment for 2011

Abu National Oil Company (ADNOC) Oasis Program for Excellence witnessed more than 10% rise in enrolled students for the year 2011. The program reported a total of 1938 students from Grade 4 to Grade 12 with 1196 males and 742 females representing 38.2%. The rise is reported to be 10.6% from last year that was 1752 students. Students are divided into the Emirate of Abu Dhabi three regions; Abu Dhabi with 547 male students and 400 females, Al Ain with 526 and 232 and Gharbia (Western) Region with 123 and 110, respectively. reflection of the efforts' mechanisms that ADNOC exerts in this field. This is been provided through a range of testing and training programs for students during their study that would guarantee their excellence and readiness to pursue university studies." The toll number of admitted students is reported to be 390 for the year 2011, while the number of graduates for the academic year 2010-2011 was reported as 204. "Fast Food Nation"

Few those films are that do more than just entertaining. Such films are few that go beyond to thinking, analyzing and applying once a movie is viewed in a room, house or a movie theater in a street or neighborhood. But this does not seem to be the case with `Fastfood Nation', directed by Richard Linklater who focuses on emerging new eating habits that have swept many segments of the American and other societies over the past two decades. The movie uses a combination of information with entertainment to hold views' attention to many trends including eating and drinking. What do people eat and how? What are the seduction, consequences and results, how a family member and family in a particular community and a company in business sector play to establish a better environment and awareness for its members away from individual thinking and selfish character, where the director questions such issues? Based on best selling book in 2001, `Fast food Nation' awakens viewers' curiosity in two hours of visual scenes and dialogues that highlight the different dimensions of fast food meals that include many disturbing facts and truths about such food. This is such as the Hamburger and fries that are known French Fries. Highlighting one of those meals, the movie journey takes views to the U.S./Mexico borders where many Mexicans risk their lives to reach out the American Dream and accept a low pay salary working at a cattle ranch. The movie takes its viewer to the residence of the head of one of these marketing companies for such products and their kitchen where it shoes the way food is been prepared by very young teenagers who fry potatoes and shake milk with fruits. The movie exposes the complications and hidden

powers' conflicts that take part in the processing and manufacturing of fast food products in specific and eating and drinking schemes in general. `Fast food Nation' is not a documentary, but it is a film that follows a certain narrative that illustrates shocked characters such as Greg Kinnear, Bruce Willis and Patricia Arquette. During the movie, many dialogues take place that depend on facts and realities away from narratives that are boring as long and repetitive lectures and lessons lectures and lessons The movie follows a very blunt in what it addresses and presents with a multi-color idea on the Fast food manufacturing industry. The movie reveals various scenes that reveal a lot about meat production. There is a scene for a cattle being slaughters and there is the amputation of a factory worker's leg by a meat grinder. The movie has a power to create that awareness for viewers to be capable in comprehending and thinking about all what they eat, how, when and where it came from before thinking of eating it. The movie offers a comprehensive view of the food manufacturing scheme in today's world. Due to graphic, but realistically factual scenes, the film is not recommended for children to watch. The movie is one of the outcomes of the so-called Sustainable Table (ST). ST is civil society organization that addresses issues of food, drinks, agriculture and the healthy way in manufacturing and eating food items. The movie calls upon adults, weather Americans and non-Americans, to spare two hours from their time to watch the movie. The movie producer and director believe viewers will never regret watching such movie, surprisingly getting to know what they will get to know after watching it.

Corniche Club organizes a number of sport and recreational activities

Marking the special occasion of Ramadan and Eid Al Fitr, the Corniche Club organized at El Etihad School a number of sport, social and recreational activities for the employees of ADNOC Group and their families. The event which comes as a gesture of joy sharing on this blessed occasion witnessed a number of festive and recreational events and activities which engaged ADNOC Group senior executives, employees and their family members. As the joyful events coincided with the school summer vocation the beloved sons of the employees had the lion share in the interesting sport and recreational activities.

The festival covered a variety of sport games; football, volleyball and basketball besides other sport and recreational events. Kiram, the wide spread game, managed to have a foot for the first time in this year celebration attracting 20 players and a large number of audience. Following a tough competition, Mr. Abdelrahman Al Bujhari of the Exploration and Production Directorate managed to win the title of the individual events whereas the title of double went to Abdelrahman Al Bujhari and I.P Fyejit of the Shared Services Directorate. also organized during Ramadan a Football Tournament for the employees. Four teams (HabshanRuwais- Zarku- Umm Alnnar) bringing together a number of ADNOC Group employees participated in this two-week competition. Following a serious of interesting and tough games which attracted a large number of supporters Ruwais football team led by Mr. Ibrahim Al Hosni won the championship title. A volley ball tournament was also organized for ADNOC Group employees during Ramadan in which three teams of ADNOC employees took part. After interesting

games, Um Alshaif team led by Mr. Mohammed Al Qubaisi secured the title of the tournament. Ramdan sport activities had also seen organization of a table tennis tournament in which 12 experienced players from ADNOC employees took part. The title of the competition went to Mr. Salaheddien and second title was secured by Mr. Hader Kirwan. The children of the employees also had a big share from the activities, as the Corniche Club Activities Committee organized a number of sport and recreational activities for the beloved sons. A foot ball tournament was organized for the juniors attracting a large participation of 90 children as the tournament coincided with the school summer vocation. The skillful juniors who had been divided to five age groups played interesting games and gave splendid performance. The sport program also included a table tennis tornament for the juniors in which a large number of employees sons participated. The title of the tournament was won by Anas Jamal Aiad while Bashar Kanafai ranked second. The organization of these activities comes within ADNOC keenness to promote the spirit of devotion and solidarity with a number of religious, cultural and social activities. It also intended to promote the spirit of team working and one family among ADNOC Group employees and engage the beloved sons in a number activities so they can invest their free time in doing what is best and useful to their development and learn how to organize their time between study and leisure.
