This new Board of Trustees will enhance and support the role and mission of the University as an academic leader and an educational force, anchored in the UAE community. It will also contribute to the future development of the university and assist with the endorsement and growth of its programs as new horizons and vistas of success unfold along the path of development. H.E. Ali Saeed Bin Harmal Al Dhaheri, said: "His Highness>s choice of these new elite members translates the University's mission and its goals, and its commitment to being an academic community of excellence, as well as a lantern for education reflecting on the business community, ensuring its demands and providing for its needs."

He also added that the new Board of Trustees will play a vital role in the University's growth by shaping its performance and benchmarking it internationally with leading universities and research organizations. It will also ensure that appropriate programs are developed in response to ever-changing business market needs.

Welcomes New Chancellor

Hailing from Purdue University, Calumet, USA with 33 years of academic experience, Dr. Nabil Ibrahim was appointed Chancellor of Abu Dhabi University (ADU) on December 2007. Occupying this pivotal and challenging position, Dr. Ibrahim is a very valuable asset to ADU as he is a senior academic professional with advanced qualifications and has made remarkable contributions to Higher Education and Academic Leadership. His 33 years of academic experience consists of assuming diverse roles and holding some important titles in various institutes such as San Jose State University, Bradley University, University of Manitoba, as well as Purdue, where he served as Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. In his five years as Purdue Chief Academic Officer, Dr. Ibrahim has demonstrated outstanding leadership in directing or otherwise playing a key contributing role to noteworthy Purdue advancements in areas of academic quality, student success, faculty development, curriculum innovation, as well as making significant contributions to community and regional economic development, according to Howard Cohen, a chancellor from Purdue University.

"Appointing Dr. Ibrahim will further enhance our academic excellence and push the university towards new unexplored terrains and projects," H.E. Ali Bin Harmal Al Dhaheri, Chairman of ADU, commented. "I am confident that the dynamic work environment at ADU will benefit greatly from his experience, which will attract even more bright minds to come work and study at ADU," he added.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ibrahim has attracted over $20 Million in research & development grants, served as principal investigator to some 35 technical projects, produced 57 publications & conference presentations, developed a number of laboratories and produced numerous student theses. In addition, he holds two US patents in Advanced Materials Engineering. Dr. Ibrahim received his BS Degree in Engineering from Cairo University and his PhD from McMaster University in Canada.

Abu Dhabi University Signs MoU With Bonn and Munich Universities

His Highness also added that Abu Dhabi University has made significant steps in its educational progress which has earned it a string reputation in terms of one of the most advanced academic institutions in the country. The university embraces in its campus students from over 44 nationalities which by itself instills in the value of tolerance and, and strengthens culture understanding between them.

Abu Dhabi University signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Munich Technical University and the University of Bonn from Germany to jointly establish a College for Medicine and Health Sciences to be based at ADU campus. Once launched the college will receive students from all around the world and will offer a multitude of medical and health sciences courses to all enrolled students. Attended by Angela Merkel, Germany's first female Chancellor and H.H Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Board of Trustees at ADU, the MoU took place at the residence of H.H Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Based on the agreement, the soon-to-be established college will offer several majors including: medical sciences, pharmacology, nursing, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Radiology, Medical Institutions Management, in addition to other medical majors which required by society.

After signing the agreement, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan praised the strong relationships between the 2 respective countries assuring that these relations were greatly supported by UAE President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed. Sheikh Khalifa are currently cooperating more in depth in other various domains and fields. The alliance between the 3 universities stands witness to the strong relations between the 2 countries and in the future will reap more academic and innovative projects that will benefit both parties. His Highness also added that Abu Dhabi University has made significant steps in its educational progress which has earned it a string reputation in terms of one of the most advanced academic institutions in the country. "Munich Technical University played vital role in developing the industry and changing the Bavaria district from agriculture to become one of the most important industrial cities in Europe," stated Professor Wolfgang Herman, Munich Technical University Chancellor. The University houses 12 colleges that offer Architectural and Civil Engineering studies and research, Medicine, Social Sciences, and Physics, in addition to all the programs offered at the main university campus in Munich. The main campus holds the University Administration offices,

Moreover, over the past 40 years, 3 of the University's professors received the Nobel Peace Prize and they are: Rudolf Mobabwaer in Physic year 1961 Ernest Otto Fetcher in Chemistry year1973 Robert Heber in Chemistry year 1988 Munich Technical University won the "Best Universities" title in a competition among German universities. It has over 20,000 students (13% foreigners), 450 faculty members, and 6500 of administrators working in its 12 colleges. It is considered one of the best technical universities that houses a medical college as well, and diligently applies the latest technological innovations in all its programs. Dean of the Health Sciences College at Bonn University stated that "our university is considered one of the leading universities in Germany and holds a prominent position locally in the fields of genetics. The health sciences center at the university offers advanced curricula in Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacology, Physiotherapy, and Medical Laboratory science. The university currently holds a student body exceeding 13,000 pupils, 520 faculty members, and 1,700 researchers."

His Highness Sheikh Haza'a Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, National Security Advisor, attended the celebrations held by ADU on the occasion of the 36th UAE National Day. The event was organized by the ADU Student Council in cooperation with ADACH, under the slogan: "Our union ... Our future" The attendees of the event included: · H.H. Praise and Pride

Afterwards, His Highness attended some activities and a night of poetry, which was organized by the ADU Student Council in cooperation with ADACH in ADU's new auditorium, in which H.E. Ali Bin Harmal gave a speech on behalf of ADU. In his speech, Bin Harmal expressed that on that great occasion of celebrating the 36th National Day we were proud to be gathered in praise of and showing gratitude to the late Sheik Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may he rest in peace. ADU stood gathered honoring the exemplary individuality of the late Sheikh, whose unifying efforts lead the nation to the heights of other developed countries and made it into a secure safe haven. The late Sheikh Zayed was very keen on education being the main driving source of development, which takes the children of this nation by the hand to a bright and better tomorrow. Accordingly, the late Sheikh, may he rest in peace, opened the doors to education and established the foundations which would allow for our nation's great schools and institutions of higher learning to grow forth from the desert sands holding within them the hopes of a nation.

Developing Education

H.E. Bin Harmal also congratulated H.H. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE on the occasion of the 36th National Day. ADU acknowledged the civil growth witnessed in the UAE under the leadership of H.H. and his brothers their highnesses members of the Higher Supreme Council ­ Governors of the Emirates. Under H.H.'s leadership, the education sector has undergone some of the most impressive developments in the nation. This is mainly due to H.H.'s determination to keep providing this dynamic sector with the necessary resources that will lift it to the international apex of innovation and dealing with challenges of the 21st century. Another undeniable element in this progress is the unlimited support of H.H. Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Head of the Abu Dhabi Education Council.

In accordance, ADU is determined on being a key player within this renaissance, thus translating the instructions of H.H. This also means positioning ADU as an intellectual lighthouse, a centre of scientific radiance and a modern bridge connected to different nations of the world.

H.E. Bin Harmal also praised the presence of Sheikh Haza'a Bin Zayed, which honoured ADU's campus and warmed the hearts of one and all at the university ­ management, faculty members and students alike. H.E. also praised the organisers from the Student Council, whose efforts will linger on as a strong motivation, prompting them to put in an effort to attain knowledge and academic excellence.

A Journey of Progress and Development

As part of the celebration, H.H. Sheikh Haza'a Bin Zayed Al Nahyan watched a visual presentation, prepared by the female students which included historical depictions of the national journey of progress and development that the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan fronted, may he rest in peace. His Highness also attended a night of poetry organised by ADACH in cooperation with the Students Council and hosted by the poet Arif Omar. Six outstanding poets participated in this night of poetry, all hailing from the popular "Million Dirham Poet" TV show: Abdel Al Rahman Al Shamri, Mohammad Bin Saqan Al Qahtani, Mubarak Al Mansoori, Fahd Al Harith, Jabir Bin Shanan Al Ahbabi, Hadi Al Mansoory. The poets performed a number of national poems, which recounted in a very powerful way the historical role of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may he rest in peace, in leading our young nation to the impressive heights of development that it is currently witnessing in all areas. For more than one hour, audience reacted positively in ADU's auditorium to the poet's epic poems, which reflected delightfully on the national occasion. Finally, H.H. Sheikh Haza'a Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, National Security Advisor, honoured H.E. Mohammad Khalaf Al Mazroui, Director General of ADACH, along with the poets and participants of the poetry night. H.E. Ali Bin Harmal Al Dhaheri presented H.H. Sheikh Haza'a Bin Zayed Al Nahyan a token from ADU's students to remember them by in the form of a silver thorough bred Arabic Horse statuette.

Scientific Programs

H.E. Bin Harmal also confirmed that ADU entertains the 36th National Day while stepping firmly into the future determined on facing its challenges and dealing with them appropriately. This will be achieved through launching 18 academic Bachelor and Master Programs and attracting 3000+ students hailing from 45 different countries from all around the world. ADU always aims at providing courses and curricula which are in accordance with the requirements of national growth and the job market.

Sheikha Fatima Bint Haza'a Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Head of the female students' council, had a speech on behalf of the female students of ADU, and it was given by her fellow student Haifa Al Haidri. In this speech, she welcomed the patron, H.H. Haza'a Bin Zayed, thanking him for his participation, describing it as a sweet and loving fatherly gesture.

The Abu Dhabi Educational Zone has held a Student Appreciation Ceremony in recognition of the hard work and efforts of high school students in the capital. The event took place under the auspices and patronage of Lt. General H.H Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and Deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Forces, and in the attendance of H.H. Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Abu Dhabi University was highlighted for its role as a leading education establishment and for its support of the education sector in Abu Dhabi primarily in conducting a wide array of projects and schemes that serve the local community. Present for ADU was H.E Ali Saeed Bin Harmal Al Dhaheri, ADU Chairman, who received an Appreciation Award from H.H. Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Abu Dhabi University Dedicates a Week to the Memory of Sheikh Zayed

Under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, and President of Abu Dhabi University Board of Trustees & Governors, and His Excellency Ali Saeed Bin Harmal Al Dhaheri, Chairman of the Executive Board of Governors, Abu Dhabi University (ADU) held a week of activities specially dedicated to the memory of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The event was organized by the students and was named "A Tribute to the Father." "We are proud to be commemorating the life and achievements of this great man," said H.E Ali Saeed Bin Harmal, ADU Chairman. "His lifework is used as inspiration and motivation at ADU and this was evident during The Tribute to the Father week of events," he added. The event was organized by the ADU Future Makers, in conjunction with the Red Crescent Society, with the support of the main sponsor, Al Awael Group. "To be a part of a venture committed to the memory of our late leader was an honor," commented H.E Dr. Hamdan Al Mazroui, UAE Red Crescent Society. "We are looking forward to participating in many more such events with Abu Dhabi University that demonstrate the institute's commitment to our society." he added. The activities that the students organized included the distribution of special "Tribute to the Father" Dua'a booklets and other mementos; praying at Sheikh Zayed's gravesite; handing out Dua'a booklets at selected high schools and malls; and holding a painting and poetry competition. One highlight of the week was an address given by H.E. Abdul Jalil Al Fahim, Honory Chairman of Al Fahim Group who attributed a speech on Sheikh Zayed's achievement-rich life, and reminiscing the close relationship he had with the nation's late leader. The main focus of the week, planned to be an everlasting memorial, was a mosque donated by Al Awael Group that will be built in Khalifa City near ADU's new campus. "To pay tribute to the lifework of Sheikh Zayed, we wanted to build something solid that reflects his personality and his achievements. This mosque gives to the community and also preserves our memory of Sheikh Zayed," said Afra Al Hamli, Chairperson, Future Makers Club. ADU Presents Best Performing UAE Students with H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Scholarships Allocating a Total of 10 AEDs Million in Grants and Financial Aid

Under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Abu Dhabi University (ADU) Board of Trustees and Governors, ADU has rewarded some of UAE's top performing high school students with H.H. Sheikh Hamdan scholarships. The scholarship will cover their four-year education program including tuition and administrative fees. The 10 AED million in grants and financial aid is the largest of its kind offered by governmental or private higher education institution. Education in the UAE has witnessed dramatic improvements, and has been endorsed by many prominent leaders and organizations who have all paved the way towards academic excellence. Higher standards of education nowadays would not have been possible were it not for the guidance of H.H. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and the unconditional support of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces. H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed's scholarship has become a prominent one in which top students compete by putting in the required effort to improve their academic standing to be awarded a prestigious scholarship of such magnitude. The scholarships will be awarded to 10 top students who will be exempted from tuition and administrative fees for the four years they attend ADU. ADU Offers Students 7 Different Scholarship and Financial Aid Programs: The President's Scholarship: Available to students who demonstrate outstanding academic records and excellent personal capabilities. It is for the duration of four years, or upon graduation, whichever is sooner, and is applicable post completion of the English Requirement, which must be completed within one year. It offers a 100% discount on tuition and includes university service fees. The University Scholarship: Available for first year students who graduate from secondary school with a high level of academic distinction. Secondary school graduates with an average of 95%-100% will receive up to 30% tuition scholarships, secondary school graduates with an average of 90%-94.99% will receive up to 20% tuition scholarships. The Athletic Scholarship: Athletes at ADU may receive up to 25% discount on their tuition fees. Family Tuition Discount: This discount is applicable on students of the same family. This implies family members with direct relation such as siblings, husband and wife, father and son, etc. Families with more than one student enrolled simultaneously at ADU will receive tuition discount for every additional member: (i) First student pays full tuition; (ii) Each of two students enrolled benefits from a 15% discount in tuition; (iii) Each of three students enrolled benefits from a 20% discount in tuition; (iv) Each of four or more students enrolled benefits from a 25% discount in tuition; The Academic Scholarship: Available to continuing students who maintain a high level of academic distinction. Eligible students must maintain, for two consecutive semesters, a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.7 with at least 12 credits per semester. The Diversity Scholarship: This scholarship, dedicated to the support of ethnic diversity, is available to first year, expatriate students from those communities that are under-represented among the expatriate groups. Students from the following countries are welcome to apply: i.e Pakistan, Iran, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, China, Korea and others of Asian or South Asian origin. Sanabil Program: The Sanabil program offers two options to students in need of financial assistance. In each case the financial circumstances of candidates will undergo comprehensive assessment. This program is available to both first year and continuing students. (a) Sanabil ­ Hasad Program: this program involves sponsorship either by an individual or a corporation. Corporate donors may opt to support a student of a particular discipline and in return the student will be expected to work for the corporation for a specified period of time either during his/her studies or upon graduation. (b) Sanabil ­ Qutoof Program: the level of sponsorship of this program is determined after a comprehensive assessment of the candidate's eligibility. Financial support may range anywhere from 10% to 50% of tuition.

AED 500 Million in Construction Costs & Four New Programs Launch

Abu Dhabi University (ADU) has officially finalised phase 1 of their campus building construction just in time for their 3000 plus students starting the new 2007-2008 academic year. In addition to the finalised developments, ADU is also welcoming students with the following new fully-accredited programs: Bachelor of Science in Interior Design, Bachelor of Science in Construction Management, Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture. According to H.E. Ali Saeed Bin Harmal Al Dhaheri, Chairman of Executive Board of Governors at ADU, with phase 1 complete and construction of phase 2 already begun, "I am proud to announce that our plans for the buildings, services and infrastructure have been perfected and are now becoming a reality. The new academic year will bring yet another stage of ADU's growth strategy into fruition, enhancing the overall performance of our university. Infrastructural development is imperative for ADU,

in order for us to prepare for the challenges of the 21st century and the tremendous increase in student and faculty numbers." Abu Dhabi campus will cost more than AED 500 million once all construction phases are completed. Mr. Qusay Al Sadiq, ADU Projects Manager, confirms that the completion of the current phase will provide ADU's students with a holistic site, facilitating all aspects of their total study experience. Phase 1 measures up to 43,000 m2, including 100 classrooms of which 38 can easily fit 40 students and 4 of which can fit up to 100 students. Furthermore, two main classrooms fit 181 students. ADU's new facilities also include 233 multipurpose rooms, 8 specialised science labs, 8 prayer rooms, 6 IT labs and one large, modern library fully equipped with comprehensive technological solutions. the capacity of seating 690 persons and a vast food court providing 6 different food outlets will all be accessible to ADU's new and current students. When preparing for the new academic year, infrastructure development is not the only aspect ADU is focusing on. Three new fully-accredited study programs will be

Department of Civil Services signs MoU with Abu Dhabi University

Under the guidance of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed, Crown prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, the Department of Civil Service announced the launch of a first-of-its-kind strategy to develop 1,500 Abu Dhabi government employees in partnership with Abu Dhabi University. The memorandum was signed by His Excellency Rashed Mubarak Al Hajeri, Chairman, DCS, and member of the Executive Council, and by His Excellency Ali Saeed Bin Harmal Al Dhaheri, Chairman of the Executive Board of Governors at Abu Dhabi University. The agreement defines the program components and structures, and the training strategy for the development of government employees. "We thank the support of HH The President and HH The Crown Prince for launching this program, in which we are investing more than AED52 million over 2 years. The delegation consisted of prominent government and academic leaders; and was led by the Bavarian State Minister of Sciences, Research and the Arts, Dr. Thomas Goppel, MdL. The Agreement Offers MBA Students at ADU the Opportunity to Earn a Second MBA Degree in International Business from (ENPC) Paris

To build on its success and to provide its students with a global management perspective and access to international institutions, ADU has signed a collaboration agreement with a prestigious "Grande Ecole" in Paris: Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (ENPC) Paris. The agreement offers the MBA students at ADU the opportunity to earn a second MBA degree in International Business from (ENPC). Students joining the MBA program at ADU will be able to earn two degrees: a general MBA degree from ADU and a specialized MBA degree from ENPC Paris. MoU Concludes Discussions of Collaboration between ADU & Monash University

Monash University visited Abu Dhabi University (ADU) to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on the 26th of March, thus concluding discussions between the two institutions. The meeting took place in the ADU Majlis room and was attended by Professor Stephanie Fahey, the Deputy Vice Chancellor International, Professor David Wilmoth, CEO of Monash College and Dr. Nizar Farjou, Advisor, Middle East & Arabian Gulf Countries Affairs. According to Dr. Farjou, Monash University is one of the best eight universities in Australia and is one of the best universities in `medical research' with an allocated budget of USD 150m to research. Furthermore, it has campuses in Malaysia and South Africa and is in cooperation with Purdue University and Arizona State University. The last meeting held with ADU was in 2007; however, discussions with respect to the collaboration originally started in 2006, with the hope that the New Year would achieve the collaboration they are keen for.

THE UNIvERSITY OF WESTMINSTER AND ADU SIGN MOU

The University of Abu Dhabi and The University of Westminster (London, UK) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding whereby the two institutions will work cooperatively through The Diplomatic Academy of London to offer a graduate degree in Abu Dhabi that meets the special needs of the international community in the UAE Capital. ADU will work with The University of Westminster's Diplomatic Academy with an eye towards initiating a master's degree in Diplomacy & International Relations. Strong interest has been expressed by the diplomatic community for such an offering, and Abu Dhabi University selected The Diplomatic Academy of London because of its international reputation both for preparing aspiring diplomats and educating mid-career professionals. A high ranking delegation from Purdue University was welcomed on Abu Dhabi University's (ADU) premises, as the two institutions officially met for the first time to discuss possibilities of future collaboration. This is the first ever meeting between Purdue and ADU; however, both parties have strongly expressed eagerness towards further strengthening the academic ties between the two institutions.

ADU & The University Of Berlin Sign MOU

The University of Abu Dhabi and The University of Berlin - Freie Universitat Berlin, recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding whereby the two institutions agreed to work cooperatively to facilitate the exchange of scholars and students between the two institutions, and to establish mutually beneficial relationships. ADU plans to design and deliver joint graduate degree programs with the Freie Universitat Berlin in the future. Strong interest has been expressed by current ADU students, as well as members of the Abu Dhabi community, for more access to international quality graduate degree programs offered in English. During the meeting, the two universities discussed potentials for joint academic programs, faculty/student exchange programs, applied research and other economic development activities. Abu Dhabi University Launches a New Institute for vocational Development

Since its set up four years ago the University has developed an international reputation for its academic programmes in Arts, Teaching, Computer Science and IT, Business Administration and will this year extend its degrees to cover applied sciences, engineering, law, medical and health sciences and construction management. The launch of IVD will complete the overall strategic plan of the University to provide comprehensive support to the community through IVD and two other institutes - the Institute of Continuing Studies to provide continuing education programs, the Institute for Enterprise Development to provide professional and executive development programs. Abu Dhabi University is unique in offering a comprehensive framework of qualifications and services that can allow organizations and individuals to develop their careers through a single, integrated source. The new Institute will specialise in delivering practical work related programmes and qualifications for students entering employment or in service training for those pursuing a vocational or professional career. It will have sites in Abu Dhabi at Khalifa City and in Al Ain in a custom built educational facility with over 60 classrooms, computer laboratories and conference facilities. Pursuant to its record of academic and community service initiatives, Abu Dhabi University launched the "Abu Dhabi Decision Makers Forum", a unique event to be organized by an academic institution on the regional level. The forum aims at exchanging views and expertise on executive issues which interest senior executive managers both in UAE and in the region.

Underlining the importance of the forum organized by the Institute for Enterprise Development of Abu Dhabi University, H.E. Mr. Ali Saeed Bin Harmal Al Dhaheri, ADU Chairman, said: the forum interprets the University's interest in fulfilling its mission mainly in community service, and enhancing the developmental advancement already taking place in different domains in society. The forum is an avenue to realize the aspired integration among academics, development institutions, and experts to exchange global experiences. The forum was launched in the Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi hosting the prominent speaker Prof. William Scott-Jackson, a fellow at Oxford University (Skope), who spoke about talent management in

International Conference on Managing Change in English Language Teaching

Dr. Hanif Hassan, Minster of Education, and H.E. Ali Saeed Bin Harmal Al Dhaheri, Chairman of Abu Dhabi University, recently inaugurated the International Conference on Managing Change in English Language Teaching. The event, which was held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and President of the Abu Dhabi University Board of Trustees and Governors, saw over 200 international delegates attending from over 16 countries, including Colombia, Singapore, UK, Belgium, Turkey, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Azerbaijan, USA, Pakistan, Qatar, Russia, India and UAE. Abu Dhabi University, IATEFL (International Association of Teachers of English as a Foreign Language) and Dome Exhibitions together helped bring this event to Abu Dhabi. The conference saw more than 40 papers presented and six workshops led by internationally recognized experts. Over the course of two days, the symposium dealt with the pace of change challenging managers, faculty and staff today; teaching English in global and local environments; the ways in which change affects both the working environment and the teachers themselves; in addition to several other topics. Four key issues stressed by participants were the need for higher English standards in the region in both education and industry, that UAE students need better English levels to be successful in college and university studies, the role of educational leaders to make this possible, and the need for follow up collaboration between IATEFL and ADU.

The English Language Institute (ELI) of Abu Dhabi University (ADU), in cooperation with PearsonLongman Publishers, organized the first ELI Community Outreach Workshop. The event took place over two consecutive days at the ADU Library on the Al Ain campus and the ADU Auditorium on the Khalifa City Campus. Over 150 participants at the workshop comprised of students and faculty from: Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT), University of Wollongong, Shahama Secondary School, Emirates College of Technology, Al-Worood Academy, Al Qadessiya Secondary School, Creative Scientific Private School, Al Falahia Secondary School, Seer Baniyas, Emirates Private School, ATI ADNOC, Al Khawarizmi International College, Etisalat Academy, Kings School, European International College, Institute for Enterprise Development (IED), Al Nahda, MOHE, and of course, ADU. Deborah Phillips, renowned author of the Pearson <TOEFL and iBT TOEFL Preparation Course> book series, presented TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and ELT (English Language Teaching) strategies, answered questions from the participants about TOEFL implementation in the UAE, and then held an open group discussion which highlighted TOEFL teaching strategies.

ADU to Introduce Accredited ib TOEFL Center

Abu Dhabi University is to be the first accredited university in the capital to open and administer an Internet Based (ib) TOEFL test centre. The university recently announced that it will begin offering the internet based test in October of this year. The TOEFL Internet-based test tests all four language skills that are important for effective communication: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. "We decided to upgrade our offerings, and switch to the ib TOEFL because it emphasizes integrated skills and can capture students' speech and score responses in a standardized manner. With the Online registration option and online score reporting, it makes it convenient and time effective for the test taker," said Sandra Zaher, English Language Institute (ELI) Director, ADU.

ELI Holds Debates for Students in ADU Campuses in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain

Debates Aim at Helping Students Sharpen their Language Skills

Abu Dhabi University's (ADU) English Language Institute (ELI) organized two major debates at their respective Abu Dhabi and Al Ain campuses. The main objective of this initiative- which was the first of its kind- was to enhance the students' language skills and put to practice their theoretical knowledge. The debate contributed to the students' holistic learning curve, and covered two major topics: schools uniforms and England versus India as a travel destination. At the end of the session, awards were given out to the Best Introduction, Best Debate Team, Best Speaker, and Best Conclusion.

Commenting on these events, Sandra Zaher, ELI Director said, «Holding debates is a true learning process for our students, since it teaches them on how to carry out proper research, hold discussions in class and present publicly. We received great feedback from all the participants, and we are already planning our next debate!"

ADU Students visited Zayed Agricultural Center for Handicapped Rehabilitation and Development

Along with the student counselor, 30 Abu Dhabi University (ADU) students from the College of Arts & Science (CAS) and the College of Business Administration (COBA) visited Zayed Agricultural Center for Handicapped Rehabilitation and Development in Bani Yas City, part of Zayed Higher Foundation for Humanitarian Welfare of Special Needy People & Minors institutions. The center houses a population aging 17+ with special needs such as Down syndrome, mild / moderate mental retardation, autism and other physical disabilities. Visit initiatives like this help students learn more about the special needs of this part of society in a direct, practical while encouraging their social responsibility towards them, which is all part of ADU's unique whole-person development approach. Bushra, one of the ADU students, who visited the center, commented:"It was a great experience. Although life is full of suffering, there are some moments that are so perfect and this was one of them. This inspired me to become a teacher to serve the special needs kids."

International Folklore Day at ADU

ADU held the first International Folklore Day, which turned out to be a major success. The theme of the day was "Different Cultures... One World). Students, academics and administrative staff participated in the event.
