CT SCAN - ORAL CONTRAST INSTRUCTIONS

PLEASE NOTE: Patients taking Metformin (Glucophage or Glucovance) must not take that medication for 48 hours after any procedure using IV contrast and should contact their physician before resuming it. Please refer any questions to your ordering physician. Oral Contrast Non-opacified bowel (bowel without contrast) may resemble some disease processes and/or pathology and may result in a nondiagnostic examination. You will be given either Gastroview (requires mixing) or Readi-Cat to opacify your bowel. It is very important to drink ALL the oral contrast that is given. ORAL CONTRAST MAY CAUSE DIARRHEA. A. Gastroview: Mix one pre-measured dose with 16 ounces of water or clear liquid (powdered drink mix or sports drink). Gastroview (Gastrografin) must be mixed prior to drinking. B. Readi-Cat: Do not mix. Shake before drinking. Contrast may be refrigerated if desired. Oral Contrast is taken 3 times prior to your examination: 1. Drink the first dose at bedtime the night before your study (for an early AM appt. only) or 3 hours prior to your study 2. Drink the second dose 1½ hours prior to the scan at 3. Drink the third dose ½ hour prior to the scan at The Day of the Examination 1. Medications: All medications may be taken except Insulin or oral hypoglycemics for diabetes 2. Fasting: Do not eat any solid food for 6 hours prior to the examination. Liquids such as water, clear broth, apple juice, cranberry juice, coffee or tea may be taken during the fast. Jell-O or any plain gelatin can also be taken during the fasting period. DO NOT DRINK MILK OR LIQUIDS THAT INCLUDE MILK PRODUCTS, ORANGE JUICE OR CARBONATED DRINKS DURING THE FAST. As Circled B. You will be asked to arrive at the center ½ hour prior to your exam time to complete your registration. Please bring your insurance card to the facility. Intravenous contrast may also be administered during the procedure. Please call us prior to this exam if you have any allergies to x-ray contrast or iodine or have a history of kidney disease.
