1. Preface 1.1 Copyright Notice ©2008 CalAmp. All Rights Reserved. This manual covers the operation of the CalAmp Aercept Vehicle Tracker. CalAmp reserves the right to modify the equipment, its specification or this manual without prior notice, in the interest of improving performance, reliability or servicing. At the time of publication all data is correct for the installation and operation of the equipment. 1.2 Unit Use The Aercept Vehicle Tracker is designed and intended for use in mobile applications. Please keep the cellular antenna of the Aercept Vehicle Tracker at a safe distance from your head and body while the modem is in use (see below). The LMU-1450 Tracker does not have external antennas. Correct placement and mounting of the LMU-1400 or LMU-1450 Tracker in accordance with the supplied installation instructions is critical to the proper operation of the Tracker. Improper mounting location or procedure may result in complete or partial loss of functionality of the Tracker. It is solely your responsibility to ensure proper installation. CalAmp shall not be liable to you (or to any person) for any loss or damage caused by improper installation of the Tracker, and all warranties provided for herein shall be void in the event the Tracker is improperly installed. IMPORTANT: Maintain a distance of at least 8 inches (20cm) between the transmitter's antenna and any person while in use. This modem is designed for use in applications that observe an 8 inch separation distance. 1.3 Interference Issues Avoid possible radio frequency (RF) interference by following the following guidelines: · The use of cellular devices in aircraft is illegal. Use in aircraft may endanger operation and disrupt the cellular network. Failure to observe this restriction may result in suspension or denial of cellular services to the offender, legal action or both · Do not operate in the vicinity of gasoline or diesel-fuel pumps unless use has been approved and authorized · Do not operate in locations where medical equipment may be in use · Do not operate in fuel depots, chemical plants, or blasting areas unless use has been approved and authorized · Use care if operating in the vicinity of protected personal medical devices, i.e., hearing aids and pacemakers · Operation in the presence of other electronic equipment may cause interference if equipment is incorrectly protected. Follow recommendations for installation from equipment manufacturers 1.4 Mobile Application Safety Avoid potential interference with vehicle electronics by correctly installing the Aercept Vehicle Tracker.

3. Product Overview 3.1 General Description The Aercept Vehicle Tracker from CalAmp is the ideal solution for consumer and commercial applications using Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) for vehicle information and control messages.

User information is easily accessed using your Internet browser. This Installation Manual covers the basic installation of the Aercept Vehicle Tracker for the professional or novice installer.

LMU-1400 Antenna Mounting The LMU-1400 requires two antennas: a GPS antenna (square) and an RF antenna (rectangular) to communicate with your cellular network. Antennas are mounted using your choice of wire ties or double-sided adhesive tape (not provided). Antenna location is critical to system operation. The provided antennas can be installed as a combined GPS/RF antenna or separately to accommodate a wide variety of vehicle models. The GPS antenna must be mounted flat with raised square portion facing up (see Figure 1a). The GPS antenna can be mounted in the dash at any location where metal does not cover it. The most common locations for antenna placement are near the gauge cluster or above vents (see Figure 1b). Wrap excess antenna cables in a figure eight and mount away from the LMU-1400 and antenna.

LMU-1400 Antenna Connection Connect the GPS antenna and RF antenna coax cables to the LMU-1400 (see Figure 2a). Coil the remaining antenna cable and secure with wire ties (see Figure 2b).

STEP 1b. LMU-1400 Mounting Mount the LMU-1400 where it will not be exposed to damage from people or objects. The LMU-1400 should not be exposed to direct sunlight or excessive heat generated by vehicle operation. Suggested mounting locations include: under the dash above the knee bolster under center console behind the glove compartment in the trunk The most common locations for mounting LMU-1400 are near the gauge cluster or under the dash above the knee bolster (see Figures 3a and 3b).

STEP 1. LMU-1450 Mounting The LMU-1450 contains both GPS and Cellular antennas; the GPS antenna is located under the product label side of the LMU-1450 Tracker. It is critical the LMU-1450 be mounted horizontally with the GPS antenna facing upwards and no metal covering it to allow a clear line of sight with the satellites.

DO NOT MOUNT THE LMU-1450 ABOVE OR NEAR ANY AIRBAGS For proper mounting, ensure the area you wish to mount the LMU-1450 is clean. Use a damp towel or alcohol clean wipes if necessary. Peel off adhesive and mount the device in a horizontal position with the GPS antenna (product label side) facing the sky (see Figures 4a and 4b). If required, use wire ties (included) to strap the device down to ensure a secure mount. Suggested mounting locations include: Above Above Above Above Gauge Custer Radio (prevent interference by routing power harness away from radio wires) Air Vents Air Duct

The LMU-1450 Tracker does not have external antennas. Correct placement and mounting of the Tracker in accordance with the supplied installation instructions is critical to the proper operation of the Tracker. STEP 2a. OBDII Harness Mounting Locate and remove the OBDII port connector from the current vehicle mounting position (see Figure 5a). If the LMU OBDII harness connector does not fit in the original factory mounting position, an optional flange has been supplied (see Figure 5b).

Plug the LMU OBDII harness connector into your vehicle's OBDII connector (see Figure 6a). Tape together the LMU OBDII harness connector and the OBDII connector to prevent loose connections that may occur from normal vehicle operation vibration (see Figure 6b).

Re-mount the LMU OBDII harness connector in the vehicle original location (see Figure 7).

STEP 2b. Standard Harness Wiring The Standard Harness requires connection to power in the vehicle. This connection will provide constant power, ignition, and ground for the LMU Tracker. This harness can also be used for optional features depending on the configuration of the LMU Tracker. It is recommended that the Power is obtained from the Ignition Harness of Vehicle. Red Wire-Connect this wire to Constant +12VDC in the vehicle. Note: There is one 3 amp fuse inline. Brown Wire-Connect this wire to TRUE IGNITION in the vehicle. Note: It is recommended to install a fuse inline (3amp max) "not supplied". Black Wire-Ground this wire to a metal surface in the vehicle.

STEP 3. LMU-1400 and LMU-1450 Power Up Test Plug the 20-pin connector from the harness into the LMU-1400 or LMU-1450 (see Figure 9a).

Confirm LMU Operation The LMU must acquire a GPS signal and communicate with the wireless network. Best conditions for confirming LMU operation occurs when the vehicle is outside in open area away from tall buildings and trees. The LED's will begin to flash at approximately 60 seconds after power up (see Figure 9b). Verify LMU Communication Verify the LMU has registered on the wireless network by checking the GSM status LED (orange LED) light. The LED will light up solid indicating successful registration. (See Table 1 for LED status definitions.) Verify the GPS receiver acquired satellite communications to obtain your GPS position by checking the GPS status LED (yellow LED). The LED will light up solid indicating a GPS lock. (See Table 1 for LED status definitions.) If the GPS receiver does not have a location lock within 15 minutes, check antenna location and placement or LMU-1450 positioning. Table 1-LED Status Definitions

5. Optional Features 5.1 Starter Disable Feature OBDII Wire Harness/Adding Starter Disable The Starter Disable feature requires true ignition power (+12VDC when the key switch is in the ON position, during cranking, and when the vehicle is running) for proper operation. To have ignition power, the ignition wire (Brown on the 20-pin connector) must be cut, an in-line fuse (3-5 amp max; not supplied) must be added and reconnected to vehicle ignition power. Cut the ignition sense wire (brown on the OBDII wire harness) closest to the fuse. Tape the exposed end by the fuse with electrical tape (see Figures 10 and 11).

Using a butt connector, tie Brown wires from the disable relay and the 20-pin connector together and crimp them into one end of the butt connector. Crimp the other end of the butt connector to the fuse (3-5 amp max) (not supplied) and connect to the ignition wire of the vehicle.

Using another butt connector, crimp the green wires from the disable relay and 20-pin harness together. Locate and cut the starter wire in the vehicle. Connect the Red wire from the disable relay to one side of the cut starter wire. Connect the Blue wire from the disable relay to the other side of the cut starter wire. The yellow wire from relay connector is not used (cut off or tape the end.)

5.2 Payment Notification Output #2 (refer to Appendix 7.1) sends a 30 second negative pulse through the Yellow Wire. Plug the optional Piezo (see Figure 12) to P5 connector of 20-pin harness.

5.3 Battery Back-up If the optional battery is installed, there should be room to mount the battery within 1 ft of the LMU-1400 or LMU-1450. Plug the optional Battery Back-Up (see Figure 13) to P2 connector of 20-pin harness. Mount the backup battery to something solid (that does not move while the vehicle is in motion) using wire ties.
