INTRODUCTION

ARN-DMC115 is high performance digital magnetic compass for land, sea and air applications. It gives tilt compensated heading angle with high accuracy and reliability. The data output is available on RS232, RS485 and MODBUS RTU digital interfaces. It measures the earth's magnetic field in three axes and orientation of gravity. The roll and pitch angles are calculated with Aeron's high accuracy MEMS digital inclinometer. This information is used to compensate body orientation in calculating heading. The proprietary digital filter reduces the noise to provide accurate heading information even in dynamic conditions. The use of solid-state sensors make ARN-DMC115 a rugged digital magnetic compass for reliable operation in variety of environment. The heading measured from this sensor is magnetic heading from north.

DATA OUTPUT FORMAT

On RS232 and RS485 interfaces sensor gives outputs angles in form of a string through transmit pin TX. This data is composed of ASCII characters and the packet is of the format, R:SXXX.XX<space>P:SXXX.XX<space>H:SXXX.XX\r\n The contents of this data packet are as described below, String/Character Name R: P: H: S XXX.XX \r \n Description Roll header Pitch header Heading header Sign Angle Carriage return Line feed Range <space> or `-' Range as per device -

On MODBUS RTU interface, details of query and response are the following

MODBUS query details; [Slave ID] [Function code] [Base address] [Number of registers] [CRC] Slave ID: It is device ID, could vary from 1 to 255. This ID is mentioned at the bottom of the sensor or last number in serial number of device Function code: Read input register, value is 04 Base address: This is fixed number, value is 00 00 Number of registers: This is fixed number, value is 00 06 CRC: It is to be calculated based on the preceding data, CRC 16 standard. For example: 01 04 00 00 00 06 70 08 Response details: [Slave ID] [Function code] [Number of bytes] [Roll angle] [Pitch angle] [CRC] Slave Id: Returns the device ID. Function code: Read input register, value is 04 Number of bytes: It is fixed, value is 12 Roll angle: 4 Bytes data Pitch angle: 4 Bytes data Heading angle: 4 Bytes data CRC: 2 Bytes data, It is to be calculated based on the proceeding data, CRC 16 standard Example: 01 04 12 xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx xx CRC On MODBUS RTU interface, user can program Slave ID and select required Baud Rate.

CALIBRATION PROCEDURE

The procedure to calibrate the module is the following. - Open Hyper Terminal program and connect device with PC - Press +++++ within 2 seconds after power up. This opens configuration Menu as following USER CONFIG: 1. Sel Baud Rate: (9600 - 0, 19200 - 1, 57600 - 5) Select appropriate and press ENTER. The change in Baud Rate will reflect after resetting the device. 2. RESTORE FACTORY CALIBRATION - Y/N? Press Y to restore, any other key will be taken as No If Yes is pressed, you'll be asked for confirmation by a message "ARE YOU SURE - Y/N?" 3. CALIBRATE MAGNETOMETER - Y/N? Press Y to perform user calibration. Before pressing Y, keep DMC horizontal, ready to be rotated in X-Y plane. DMC displays following, Rotate in X-Y plane Calibration %, approximate heading The user is required to rotate 360deg until the calibration percentage is 100%. Following this user is required to keep the DMC on one side i.e. Roll = 90deg. and then press any Key to continue. DMC displays following Rotate in X-Z plane Calibration %, approximate heading Rotate again 360deg and wait for calibration to be 100%. Press any key and restart device. The calibration process is completed. Mind presence of changing magnetic field because of electrical objects in vicinity.
