Types of Solar Panels

Folding 60W

Polycrystalline Panels

Polycrystalline solar cells are a blue colour, with the individual crystals being visible from multiple angles. The cells are cut to a square shape which gives the best power production for a given panel size. Aiming is not critical as the cells are picking up the light from many different angles.

Monocrystalline Panels

Monocrystalline solar cells appear black in colour, are of a rigid construction and do not fill the entire panel area. As a result they only effectively pick up light when correctly aimed towards the sun. They are durable in construction but do not perform quite as well as polycrystalline cells in excessive heat.

Amorphous Panels

Amorphous solar cells are of a non crystalline structure and are purple in colour. They are flexible and their wiring gives them better performance in shaded conditions. To achieve the desired output the panel has to be much larger than monocrystalline or polycrystalline panels.

What are solar cells?

Solar cells are the building blocks of solar panels. They are solid state semiconductor devices that convert light directly into electricity. They are usually made of silicon with traces of other elements and are first cousins to transistors, LED's and other electronic devices.

How do they work?

A solar cell consists of layers of semiconductor materials with different electronic properties. In a typical polycrystalline cell the bulk of the material is silicon doped with a small quantity of boron to give it a positive or p-type character. A thin layer iranha on the front of the cell is doped with phosphorous to give it a P R negative or n-type character. Light consists of particles called photons. When the light hits the solar cell, some of the photons are absorbed in the region of the junction, freeing electrons in the silicon crystal. If the photons have enough energy the electrons will be able to overcome the electric field at the

junction and are free to move through the silicon and into an external circuit. As they flow through the external circuit they give up their energy as useful work (turning motors, lighting lamps, etc) and return to the solar cell. This solar cell (photovoltaic) process is completely solid state and self contained. There are no moving parts and no materials are consumed or emitted.

A. 12V 10amp B. 12V 20amp The INTELLIGENT Battery Charger series feature a 'charge isolated switchmode charging circuit' for charging lead-acid batteries that is highly efficient. The purpose is to charge a 12V/18~250A/h battery as quickly and safely as possible to the highest practically attainable capacity, and maintain this capacity indefinitely. During charging there is a current meter or LED indicating that the unit is charging.

There are 3 stages in charging: 1. Detecting stage - detects the 'at rest' state of the battery. 2. Constant Current - charging the battery at highest capacity until charged to 80%. 3. Constant Voltage - supplies a constant voltage of 14.7 V to the battery and continues to do this for a maximum of six hours. During this time the current will reduce gradually until the battery is fully charged.

OUTBACK BATTERY CHARGER

A small, light weight, portable petrol powered battery charger that really works! Quickly charges a vehicle's battery for farms, camping, boating, 12V lighting or anyone working outback. It's fast and fuel efficient using a Honda 4 stroke OHV motor. It can supply enough charge for a flat battery to start the car or tractor in approximately 5 minutes. A Power Inverter is a device that takes in 12 or 24 Volt DC power and inverts it up to 240 Volt 50hz AC power. This power can be used for a variety of applications, from charging computer batteries, to power tools such as a drill or grinder.

Inverters have two ratings: - Peak, the absolute maximum output usually for a very short period of time. - Continuous, their continuous output. These ratings are in watts. To determine the most suitable inverter you must know the power requirement of what you wish to run. If unsure, contact us. The AC output of inverters is divided into two basic styles, pure sine wave and modified square wave. Both will run most appliances, however some scientific or medical equipment will only operate correctly on pure sine wave. It is critical to ensure the correct style of inverter is obtained. - Output, Inverters are available in a wide range of outputs from 140 watt to 5000 watt; Too small and an inverter will not do what you intended. Too powerful and it will only consume the power it needs, but will cost you a little extra. Our advice is don't undersize!

What Size Solar Panel do I need to Run My Fridge?

The following are some examples of a quick way to determine the solar power required to MAINTAIN A BATTERY running a 40L Engel fridge in varying circumstances.

The formula we will use is: 1/ WATTS ÷ VOLTS = AMPS 2/ AMPS - 10% = USEABLE AMPS 3/ USEABLE AMPS X SUNLIGHT TIME = TOTAL AMPS SUPPLY IN A GIVEN TIME

EXAMPLE 1

If we take a typical situation of approx 6 hours of useable sunlight during the day (remember, direct sunlight - no cloud cover), a 50 watt solar panel and a 40L Engel fridge (that uses 2.2 Amps per hour):

This means the fridge could run for 10 hours using a total of 22 Amps.

EXAMPLE 2

If we take a typical situation of approx 10 hours of useable sunlight during the day, a 60 watt solar panel and a 40L Engel fridge (that uses 2.2 Amps per hour):

1/ 60 WATTS ÷ 12 VOLTS = 5 AMPS 2/ 5 AMPS - 10% = 4.5 USEABLE AMPS 3/ 4.5 AMPS X 10 HOURS = 45 AMPS in 24 HOURS

This means the fridge could run for 20 hours using a total of 44 Amps.
