Explanation Key Poll Average -- The average of The Associated Press media poll and USA Today-ESPN coaches poll. Others receiving votes are calculated in order received. Computer Average -- The average of Anderson & Hester, Colley Matrix, Richard Billingsley, Kenneth Massey, David Rothman, Jeff Sagarin, Matthews Scripps-Howard, and the Peter Wolfe computer rankings. The computer component will be determined by averaging six rankings. The highest and lowest will be disregarded. Schedule Rank -- Rank of schedule strength compared to other Division I-A teams divided by 25. This component is calculated by determining the cumulative won/loss records of the team's opponent (66.6 percent) and the cumulative won/loss records of the team's opponents' opponents (33.3 percent). Losses -- One point for each loss during the season. Quality Win Component -- The quality win component will reward to varying degrees teams that defeat opponents ranked among the top 15 in the weekly standings. The bonus point scale will range from a high of 1.5 points for a win over the top ranked team to a low of 0.1 for a victory over the 15th-ranked BCS team. The final BCS standings will determine final quality win points. If a team registers a victory over a team more than once during the regular season quality win points will be awarded just once. Quality win points are deducted from the team's total of poll average, computer average, schedule rank and losses.

*Bowl

(Continued from Page 1B) failed to finish the AP media poll's top five. The Hokies are 1-2 in the Gator Bowl. They lost to Tennessee 45-23 in 1994 and North Carolina 42-3 in 1997. Last year, they defeated Clemson 41-20. The Buckeyes, who beat the Wolverines 26-20 on Saturday, return to Tampa, where they lost 24-7 to South Carolina last year in what turned out to be John Cooper's final game as coach. Jim Tressel replaced him this year. In addition to Miami, three other teams have clinched berths in BCS games as conference champions -- Illinois (Big Ten), Oregon (Pac-10) and Maryland (ACC). The SEC and Big 12 champions have yet to be decided, and then two at-large teams will be chosen to round out the field for the four BCS games -- the Rose, Orange, Fiesta and Sugar bowls. In the Mountain West Conference, league champion BYU is penciled in for the Liberty Bowl (against Louisville) unless it somehow manages to work its way into a BCS game, with Colorado State likely headed to the New Orleans Bowl (against North Texas) and Utah to the Las Vegas Bowl against a Pac10 team. Washington and Washington State already accepted bowl bids. The Huskies are in the Holiday Bowl against a Big 12 team, and the Cougars are set for the Sun Bowl against a Big Ten team. Marshall and Toledo, both from the MidAmerican Conference, also have bowl berths -- the Thundering Herd in the GMAC Bowl and the Rockets in the Motor City Bowl.
