Source-changeover systems for circuit breakers and switch-disconnectors 40 to 5000 A

Applications

To ensure a continuous supply of electrical power, certain installations are connected to two sources: c normal source N, c replacement source R used to supply the installation when the normal source is absent. The source-changeover system switches the load between these two sources. It can be automated to take into account the status of these sources before switching. Made up of two or three circuit breakers, Merlin Gerin sourcechangeover systems offer compact solutions optimising the essential functions: circuit protection, service continuity and energy management.

Manual and automatic source-changeover systems

Manual source-changeover system

This is the most simple type of source-changeover system. It is controlled manually by an operator and consequently the time required to switch from the normal to the replacement source can vary. The manual sourcechangeover system is made up of two or three mechanically interlocked circuit breakers.

Automatic source-changeover system

This the system most often employed. No human intervention is required and switching form the normal to the replacement source takes place in less than 1 second. This changeover system is made up of: c 2 or 3 circuit breakers, c 1 mechanical and electrical interlocking system, c 1 controller either: v provided by the customer or contractor, v or supplied as an option (2 models available offering basic or extended source and load management functions).

Choice of automatic controller

BA controller, for a simple source-changeover system (automatic switching between the normal and replacement sources depending on their status). UA controller, for a source-changeover system integrating the following automatic functions: c automatic switching between sources, c control and management of engine generating sets, c load shedding for non-priority circuits, c switching to the replacement source if one of the phases of the normal source is absent. A communication option based on the Schneider internal bus is available for the UA controller.

Automatic operation

(2) The controller is supplied by the ACP auxiliaries control unit. The voltage supplied to the controller must be the same as that of the ACP unit, the IVE unit and the motor mechanisms. If this voltage is the same as the source voltage, then the "Normal" and "Replacement" sources can be used to supply the ACP directly. If not, a BC type or equivalent isolation transformer must be used.
