THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD MANNERS

(With some emphasis conduct)

Adab, or manners, is a very important characteristic of Al-Islam. When exalting the Sunnatur Rasoolallah (saw) many Muslims devalue the regular, well-known, way of old-fashion good manners. It is also important to know that Al-Islam even has its own types of etiquettes and the Prophet (saw) would familiarize himself with the cultural etiquettes of others to implement them in advancing The Deen. Akhlaq is an important term to cover in understanding adab. Akhlaq literally means the nature of someone, or the way they've been created. We commonly translate it as conduct. `Amaal, or deeds, is also a term that we will cover, insha'Allah. Narrated Abdullah ibn Sarjis The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "A good manner of conduct, deliberation and moderation are a twenty-fourth part of prophecy." Tirmidhi transmitted it. Narrated Abdullah ibn Busr al-Aslami The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The best person is he who has a long span of life and whose action and conduct are good. Transmitted by Tirmidhi. Narrated AbuHurayrah Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: There are two qualities which can never coexist in a hypocrite: good conduct and comprehension of religion. Transmitted by Tirmidhi. Narrated Masruq Abdullah bin 'Amr mentioned Allah's Apostle saying that he was neither a Fahish nor a Mutafahish. Abdullah bin 'Amr added, "Allah's Apostle said, 'The best among you are those who have the best manners and character.' " Narrated Ibn Abbas The Prophet cursed effeminate men (those men who are in the similitude (assume the manners of women) and those women who assume the manners of men, and he said, "Turn them out of your houses." The Prophet turned out such-and-such man, and 'Umar turned out such-and-such woman. Narrated AbuHurayrah The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The most perfect Muslim in the matter of faith is one who has excellent behavior; and the best among you are those who behave best towards their wives. Transmitted by Tirmidhi saying this is hasan sahih tradition. Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "I was sent to perfect good character." Al-Muwatta Hadith
