STEVE SPRIGGS

Dear Comrades, PRESS RELEASE Contact: CalVet, Veteran Services Division 1-800-741-8532 May 17, 2011 DMV Now Offers Veteran's Plates Online SACRAMENTO The State of California's specialized veteran's license plates are now available for purchase online. Previously, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in conjunction with the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) has offered these specialized license plates through in person and mail-in sales only. This new online system of purchasing will make it easier for all California motorists to show their support for veterans and the men and women serving in our military. "These plates are available for any motorist to buy. The more plates purchased the more our state is able to help veterans," said Peter J. Gravett, CalVet Secretary. "Every plate purchased basically covers the cost of filing a claim for a veteran, so that he or she can get the benefits they have earned." "We are pleased to now offer the sale of veteran's plates online to our customers," said George Valverde, Director of the California Department of Motor Vehicles. "These plates reflect the rich and storied history of the contributions of California Veterans to our state." These plates have several models that help honor and recognize specific veteran groups, military units and services. In addition to these plates, over 200 insignias are available to put on these plates to help signify which organizations or military affiliations each motorist represents. To view all available logos for your cars, motorcycles and trucks, go to http://www.cacvso.org/page/20111-19-59-license-plate-logos/. The cost for sequential plate is $30 and $10 more for personalized plates. With online sales CalVet expects the annual sales of these plates to rise. All proceeds from the sale of veteran's plates are used to expand veteran's service in your community. Since the inception of the Veterans plate program in 1995, approximately 24,500 Veteran plates have been issued with $6.8 million raised and distributed by the California Department of Veterans Affairs to benefit participating county veteran service offices and to commemorate veteran organizations. * * * * * *

COMMANDER

This will be my Final newsletter article as I am finishing my fourth term as Commander/ CEO of Newport Harbor Post 291. It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve with an outstanding group of Legionnaires who have made up the Post 291 Exec-Board. I would like to also take this time to personally thank, and acknowledge the work of the Post 291 House Committee. The Post has many Legionnaires who have been successful in the business world. The Post 291 House Committee has done a fabulous job of managing the day-to-day operations of the Post. They hold a Staff Committee meeting, followed by a House Committee meeting every week. These meetings last three to four hours. We are lucky to have such dedicated Legionnaires that make up the House Committee and Exec. Board. I want to congratulate the newly elected and appointed officers of The American Legion Newport Harbor Post 291, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 291, the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 291 and The American Legion Yacht Club. I am confident that they will continue to work together to make Newport Harbor Post 291 the choice for anyone wishing to join the American Legion Family. For the first time in many years, Newport Harbor Post 291 will host the 5th Area, American Legion Dept of CA meeting the weekend of June 11-12. The 5th Area of the American Legion in CA is made up of the five "Districts" (Counties) of Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, San Diego and Imperial. All of the District Commanders and 1st Vice Commanders will be in attendance. The incoming 5th Area Vice Commander is Newport Harbor Post 291 member T. Robert Carolan. Bob will be installed at the June 23-26, Dept of CA State Convention in Ontario. Congratulations Bob!!! By the time that you read this article, we will have finished the Memorial Day ceremonies at Pacific View Memorial Park and at Newport Harbor Post 291. The Guest Speaker at Pacific View is LtCol Ben Watson, who recently returned from Afghanistan where he led the 3/1 Marines. While deployed in Afghanistan, the 3/1 Marines pacified a large area, but lost 14 Marines in the process. We will help LtCol Watson honor his fallen Marines and he will help us honor all veterans. For God and Country, Steve Spriggs, Commander 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 Newport Harbor Post 291 3

KEN WIDDALL

I'm looking forward to the upcoming Convention this month. It is being held at the Ontario Convention Center, 2000 E. Convention Center Way, Ontario CA June 24-26. And for the first time ever, our very own Color Guard will be competing for the State title. We want to wish Commander Al Hoyo all the best and hope they bring home a 1st place win. Good Luck! As everyone knows, this year, like every other year, the 4th of July means lots of fun and enjoyment at the Post. It also is time to renew your membership. I will be at the Post from early morning until 12 noon. If you would like to renew your membership at that time, please bring your check or cash. We do not accept credit cards for membership on the 4th. I will be happy to get you paid up for the year 2012. What I'm about to tell you is very hard for me. You see I and the American Legion Post 291 have lost a true patriot and friend. On the evening of May 4th at approximately 8:45 pm, 48 year old Kevin Garland of the Mountain Fife and Drums was tragically killed by a suspected 20 year old driver on his way home. Kevin was the magnificent leader of the Mountain Fife and Drums. They have performed for the Pacific View Cemetery and Post 291 for the past three years. While I attended the Christian burial of this wonderful man, I was told that Kevin would want the group to go on and complete its prior commitments because that's the kind of person Kevin was. May God bless Kevin and may he rest in peace. For those of you who would like to do something special for a veteran, I have a suggestion for you. Every third Thursday of the month, our Auxiliary packs up sandwiches, sodas, clothes, socks, and personal items and drives to the Long Beach Veterans Hospital at 6 pm. They visit with some very unfortunate fellow veterans and have a little get-together. They play Bingo with the patients and have conversation, one on one. It really means a lot to have someone visit a patient who for whatever reasons has very few friends or family in the area. It does the patients good to win at Bingo, as for some unknown reason every patient seems to win a prize at Bingo. If you feel that you would like to participate or contribute, feel free to call our office and they will be happy to give you the details. For God and Country, Bill Dunn 1st Vice Commander

Soon you'll receive raffle tickets and meal tickets for our big 4th of July event, our biggest fundraiser of the year. Many people buy both event tickets and raffle tickets, even if they can't attend. That's a great way to support our Legion programs. Please support your Post!

We need raffle prizes for our 4th of July celebration. If you'd like to donate a "dinner for two" gift certificate from a local restaurant, or a gift card from area retail stores like Target or Home Depot, we would be very appreciative. Volunteer lists are posted in the main hall. Please sign up soon, so we have enough helpers to make this a great event. We'll need at least 80 people. For the most part, we're asking helpers to do a two-orthree-hour shift. We have parking problems resolved for volunteers, and we'll get that information to you via email along with assignment notes. We've got great, talented and helpful folks here at the post, and volunteering is a great way to make new friends. As usual, I invite you to get the latest Post news from Facebook, American Legion Post 291 Newport Harbor. (Don't forget the "Newport Harbor" part or you'll get a useless business site) From Memorial Day to Labor Day we'll run Saturday musical entertainment on the patio, so come on down and enjoy the view and music. Burn your own is pretty much always available. Lastly, I look forward to working with our new commander, Jess Lawson. He's already shown his leadership skills at the Post, District, and state levels. Before he's too far out the door, I must thank Steve Spriggs and his wife, Jan, for helping me to handle this job for the past four years. Of course that's what real leaders do, mentor the next generation, and I'm grateful for their guidance. I hope to see you all on 4th of July. For the good of the Legion Ken Widdall

KENDALL MADSEN

Dear Auxiliary members, It is June which means all of our Officers for the 2011-2012 term have been elected. I want to congratulate the new and retiring officers and a huge thank you to those stepping down. Your service and leadership have been invaluable to our success. On June 9, we are having our Installation Ceremony and I encourage everyone to attend and meet the Executive board members of the Auxiliary, the Squadron and the Legion. A few of the Annual reports were awarded at the May District meeting (see list at right) I'm hoping I'll need a wheel barrel for the remaining awards that will be presented at the June District meeting. A very well deserved Joy Cernich, received the Unit 291 Auxiliary "Member of the Year" for her continued support, not only for the tireless work as our treasurer and fundraiser, but for the work she continues to do for our Veterans and the many programs our Unit supports. Congratulations Joy! The Department of California is holding their annual Convention in Ontario from June 23-26. I recommend attending, as it is a great way to learn about all of the Auxiliary programs and meet other Auxiliary members from around our great state. This is the year of the Post family and we all need come together and work as a team to support all of our programs and facility! To kick it off, we are having Saturday Night at the Movies. The movie is FREE and popcorn and candy are offered for a donation. All proceeds go to support Troop Shipping, a program that is near and dear to all of the families. And as of this writing Memorial Day ceremony is a week away. As it is a day off from work, it is also a day of remembrance. If you have never been to Pacific View or the Post for the ceremony, you are missing a very inspiring day. I'm sure this year will be a very emotional day as the founder of the Mountain Fife and Drum Corp., Kevin Garland was tragically killed weeks ago in an auto accident. Our prayers go out to Kevin's Family, his close knit community and his loved ones. I hope to see you around the Post! Hope you were able to attend ALYC's 45th Opening Day. Jon Reynolds, Staff Commodore, did his usual great job as MC and Rear Commodore Floyd Sanford pulled it all together. The ceremony was followed by a boat parade that gave the traditional cannon salute to other Yacht Clubs in the harbor. A good time was had by all.

ALYC runs fun Lido 14 races every month?

We have been running "LIDO CLASSICS" once a month every month for the past 8 years! This is a grass roots type of fun, casual, but competitive day of Lido racing, held right out front on the bay. We get 6-10 boats each month, from all over Southern California. Very often Father and Son or more often Father and Daughter teams (Moms too). In addition we get folks new to racing as well as some local rock stars tuning there skills for the next big regatta! Races are usually on a Sunday with a 1:00pm start. We race 4-5 five short races and finish around 4pm. Racing is always followed by trophies and fun at The American Legion Post 291. For more information and schedules go to www.lidoclassic.com or call Scott Porter (P.R.O.) at 949-279-7575 Next race is April 10th...See ya on the water
