president's message

Dear Friends, This year, with your generous support, the Greater New York Chapter has been able to again expand programs, increasing our funding for both research and patient services. Our Chapter is serving more patients, expanding clinic hours, providing additional support group meetings and increasing the number of medical and augmentative communication equipment on loan. In addition, we have added in-home and respite care services through the Barry Barkoff Respite Care Program. Thanks to the hard work of our ALS advocates in New York State, our Chapter has received support from the State to expand our clinics and patient programs. On a federal level, our Chapter advocates have made a difference in encouraging legislation to advance our cause. Our own New York Congressman, Eliot Engel, introduced the National ALS Registry Act (H.R. 2295), which passed the full House Energy and Commerce Committee on September 27th 2007. This important achievement moves the Bill forward to the final stage of the legislative process in the House of Representatives. Finally, keep your eyes open as we roll out a new look in future Chapter publications. The ALS Association has unveiled a dynamic new logo, shown below, and theme line that underscores its commitment in the fight against Lou Gehrig's Disease. The new logo of the ALS Association a hand touching a vibrant red-letter "A" visually represents its unending, heartfelt pledge to fight on every front to improve life for those living with Lou Gehrig's Disease. The visual identity reflects The ALS Association's three focused areas of expertise and commitment: research, advocacy, and comprehensive care and support services for all PALS. It has been an exciting year for us at the Chapter. With your support, we look forward to continuing to grow our commitment to serve the hundreds of people living with ALS in greater New York and northern and central New Jersey. Best Wishes,

In Memory of SUSAN HUFFORD

Susan Hufford, board member of the Greater New York Chapter and trustee on the National Board of The ALS Association, died on November 28th, 2006 after a year-long battle with cancer. After her husband, Emmy award winning actor, Michael Zaslow's death in 1998, Susan played a leading role in advocacy efforts, joining the Chapter's Board as Public Policy Chair and serving as a trustee on The ALS Association National Board. As president of Michael Zaslow's ZazAngels, Susan worked tirelessly to raise awareness and funds for ALS by producing five Broadway Theater benefits, including Tuesdays with Morrie starring Jerry Stiller which raised over $1 million for ALS research. In 2005, Susan published Not That Man Anymore: A Message from Michael, written by Zaslow and Hufford, which chronicles Michael's year-long battle with ALS.

12th Annual Lou Gehrig Sports Awards Benefit

Honoring Claire and Leonard Tow

On November 1, 2006, supporters of the Greater New York Chapter gathered for the 12th Annual Lou Gehrig Sports Awards Benefit at the Marriott Marquis New York. Claire and Leonard Tow were honored with the Jacob K. Javits Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of their leadership in the fight against ALS. In 1999 Claire was diagnosed with ALS. The Tows have since donated millions of dollars to medical research to eradicate ALS. With Bob Costas as Presenter and Jeremy Schaap as Master of Ceremonies, the Benefit also honored New York Yankee great, Yogi Berra, and captain of the 1980 United States Olympic Hockey Team, Mike Eruzione with the Lou Gehrig Sports Award in recognition of their personal and professional achievement. For yet another year, BBDO showcased humorous videos, highlighting the athletes, and a moving profile of PALS, Adele Zinberg and Marlene Fraehmke and their families. After accepting his award, Yogi Berra offered inspiring words to the attendees by remarking, "I never met Lou Gehrig. But the great Bill Dickey, the one who `learned me all his experience,' was Lou's roommate and closest friend. And he told me all about him. He told me he could do everything on a ball field. He told me about his dignity and humility. He didn't have to tell me about ALS we've lost too many people too young to this terrible disease. Thinking about my good friend Catfish Hunter, it's very hard. But we can't give up. All of us need to keep the faith, keep pitching in, keep working. We can't stop." The Benefit raised $900,000 for the Greater New York Chapter, supporting patient services and research programs.

Although able to communicate to her U.S. Representative and Senators with an Augmentative Communication device, PALS, Fern Cohen, also left behind a letter so she could tell her full story. "I was teaching French, Spanish, and English as a Second Language in a high school in East Harlem, when I began to trip and fall inexplicably, and my speech started to slur. Once an avid bicycle-rider and in top shape, I now felt a cloud of fatigue cutting my workouts short. It was 2003, I had received my coveted tenure. I was fluent in three languages and was proud of the place I had carved out for myself, including a fulfilling and rewarding teaching career, and a co-op apartment. Along the way, I had completed a Masters degree at NYU too. Slowly, my world began to fall apart and finally in January, 2004, I knew the reason why. ALS was robbing me of my abilities, and I learned I was dying." Today, I can no longer speak and I need my wheelchair to get around. Always fiercely independent and self-sufficient, I now rely on aides 24/7 to help me with the most basic tasks toileting, showering, cleaning etc. My respiration is failing, and I use a ventilator at night, and for a few hours during the day. I was always on the go; now, I am forced to plan out every activity, every outing. But through it all, I choose to live and fight to find a cure, because now there is none."

WHAT IS ALS?

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a fatal neuromuscular disease that attacks the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. As these cells or motor neurons die, the muscles they control become weak and then nonfunctional. As the disease progresses, people with ALS become paralyzed, while their minds usually remain unaffected and aware of their bodies' deterioration. ALS became known as Lou Gehrig's Disease when the New York Yankee great died of it in 1941. Outside of the United States, ALS is often referred to as Motor Neuron Disease.

MISSION

To lead the fight to cure and treat ALS through global, cuttingedge research, and to empower people with Lou Gehrig's disease and their families to live fuller lives by providing them with compassionate care and support. As one of The ALS Association leading chapters, the Greater New York Chapter plays a major role in promoting the mission of The ALS Association by . . . Providing a comprehensive range of support services for patients and their families in the Greater New York area including New York City's five boroughs, Long Island, Westchester and Rockland counties and northern and central New Jersey. Funding aggressive, cutting edge research to find a cure that utilizes the newest techniques and fosters collaborative initiatives among government agencies, the private sector and scientists. Supporting The ALS Association's national advocacy program to expand government support of research and elicit programs to make treatments and care accessible and affordable for all ALS patients. Heightening awareness of ALS in order to stimulate volunteerism, scientific and healthcare community activism, and public support that is essential to the fight against ALS.

FACTS ABOUT ALS...

ALS can strike anyone. It occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or social-economic boundaries. ALS is not a rare disease. Over 5,600 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with ALS every year--15 new cases every day. Each year, the number of people who learn they have ALS is about the same as those who find out that they have multiple sclerosis. The average life expectancy of an ALS patient is two to five years from diagnosis. About 20% live five years or more and up to 10% will survive more than ten years. ALS is not contagious. Approximately 5 to 10% of ALS is familial, occurring more than once in a family lineage. The care of an ALS patient can cost up to $200,000 per year, depleting entire savings of patients and relatives. While there is no cure for ALS, with the proper medical management and support, people with ALS can lead more independent and productive lives.

ADVOCACY

An important aspect of The ALS Association Greater New York Chapter's work is raising awareness about ALS and advocating for legislation critical to those living with ALS.

Each spring, chapters of The ALS Association from across the country travel to Washington, D.C. for National Advocacy Day and Public Policy Conference. In 2006, over 700 delegates representing 43 states went to Washington to meet with their Representatives and Senators to ask for co-sponsorship of the ALS Registry Act (H.R. 4033/ S. 1353) and to allocate funding for ALS in the Department of Defense. THE ALS REGISTRY ACT The ALS Registry Act (H.R. 4033/S. 1353) would authorize the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to create and maintain a single nationwide ALS registry. The establishment of a national ALS registry will help identify the incidence and prevalence of ALS in the U.S. and collect data which is urgently needed for ALS research, disease management, and the development of standards of care. A national ALS registry also will promote a better understanding of the disease, help to determine causes of ALS and significantly enhance the nation's efforts to find a treatment and cure for ALS. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE APPROPRIATIONS ACT Studies, including those conducted by the Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Veterans Affairs and researchers at Harvard University, repeatedly have shown that ALS occurs at a greater rate in military veterans. By including ALS in the DOD's Neurotoxin Exposure Treatment Research Program, Congress will enable important ALS research to continue at DOD, help to determine why those in the military are at a greater risk of the disease, and ensure that our nation takes appropriate action to protect the health and lives of our military men and women. Importantly, research conducted by the Department of Defense will also yield important clues and data about ALS that will benefit all people suffering from the disease and will help make progress in finding a treatment and cure for ALS. Due to the dedication and hard work of ALS patients and their families and supporters, previous accomplishments from National Advocacy Day efforts include: Passage of the historic legislation to eliminate the 24-month Medicare waiting period for people with ALS. Increased annual federal funding for ALS research from $15.1 million in 1998 to an estimated $50 million in 2006, including funding from the National Institute of Health, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Establishment of a presumptive disability ruling for ALS at the Social Security Administration, helping to ensure timely access to disability benefits for people with ALS. Two Congressional hearings dedicated solely to ALS, including a hearing held in 2005 by the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor and Health and Human Services. Most other diseases have not been the sole subject of a Congressional hearing, let alone two in less than five years.

The Milton Safenowitz Post-Doctoral Fellowship for ALS Research

In memory of her husband, who passed away in 1999, Greater New York Chapter board member, Marilyn Safenowitz established the Milton Safenowitz Post-Doctoral Fellowship for ALS Research, with a $1 million grant from the Milton and Marilyn Safenowitz Family Foundation. These grants encourage bright young investigators to enter the field of ALS. The ALS Association is especially committed to bringing new concepts and methods into ALS research, and young scientists play an important role in this process. The 2007 Milton Safenowitz Post Doctoral Fellowship Projects are:

Determining the Contribution of Mitochondrial Dysfunction in ALS Pathogenesis

Sandrine Da Cruz, Ph.D., working with Don Cleveland at the Ludwig Institute at the University of California, San Diego, will study the role in ALS of the mitochondria, the cellular power supplies that fuel all metabolic reactions, using genetically manipulated mice. Knowing how the mitochondria contribute in ALS will guide therapeutic efforts in the disease.

The ALS Association Announces 2007 Research Funding: New Efforts Promise Accelerated Progress

The ALS Association announces new projects that build on the most recent progress in understanding the disease process in order to devise effective treatment. Proposals include several approaches to find ALS biomarkers, molecules that specifically can report the onset, presence, and progression of the disorder to speed diagnosis, increase efficiency of clinical trials, and provide focused targets for developing new, effective therapies. Funding for these projects began August 1, 2007. The grants awarded include funding to researchers around the world. The ALS Association currently funds more than 20 international grants in more than 12 different countries. The criteria for funding are based on innovative, cutting-edge science regardless of the country in which it is produced. In some cases, studies abroad offer unique opportunities. This is the case with stem cell research as legal requirements to conduct this research vary widely from country to country. For genetics studies, some countries may offer particular population characteristics or

The Metabolome of the Cerebrospinal Fluid: Signature for ALS

Gurudutt Pendyala, Ph.D., working with Howard Fox, M.D., Ph.D., at The Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, Calif., will seek to find a marker of the disease in the products of metabolism of the human body as well as in animal models for ALS. A reliable and reproducible set of metabolic biomarkers would allow faster diagnosis, streamlined clinical trials, and a window into the changes that could provide therapeutic targets.

Molecular Controls over Early Specification and Differentiation of Corticospinal Neurons (Upper Motor Neurons)

Caroline Rouaux, Ph.D., working with Paola Arlotta, Ph.D., Massachusetts General Hospital, will build on progress achieved with funding from The ALS Association in projects originating under the direction of Jeffrey Macklis, Ph.D., at Harvard. These investigators have found some of the control signals that guide stem cells in the developing brain to send their long extensions, called axons, down the spinal cord to connect to the lower motor neurons that contract muscles. The information should give important insights into stem cell therapy for ALS that could show a way to produce upper motor neurons to replace the dying ones.

Effect of Astrocytic Nrf2 Activation on the Onset and Progression of Motor Neuron Degeneration in an ALS-Animal Model

Marcelo Vargas, Ph.D., working with Jeffrey Johnson, Ph.D., at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, will examine the role of a defense system present in the cells that surround and aid the motor neurons. This experiment should define whether the Nrf2 system is a way to affect the disease process and therefore a promising avenue toward effective therapy.

The grants awarded include funding to researchers around the world. The ALS Association currently funds more than 20 international grants in more than 12 different countries.

cultural and socioeconomic factors. Ireland for instance provides a relatively homogeneous population with health information maintained in databases enabled by socialized medicine, a situation that is particularly useful for looking at likely risk factors for ALS.

"Ask the Experts" Conference

The Greater New York Chapter hosts 3 "Ask the Experts" ALS Symposia annually in New Jersey, New York and Long Island, giving PALS and family members an opportunity to ask ALS researchers and specialists questions about current research and care topics for those living with ALS, as well as participate in a series of workshops on patient care.

Long Island

The Long Island Symposium featured researchers who participated in the Axon Dynamics Workshop, funded by the Chapter and held at Banbury Center, Cold Spring Harbor, NY. Speakers included Lucie Bruijn, PhD, Science Director and Vice President for the ALS Association; Erika L.F Holzbaur, PhD, Professor, . Department of Physiology, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine; and Jonathan D. Glass, MD, Professor of Neurology, Director, ALS Center, Emory University School of Medicine. The Banbury workshop focused on the most recent progress in the complex fiber of nerve cells called the axon. The axon is what enables nerve cells to convert the electrical charge of their activation into a chemical message. For motor neurons, that conversion takes place as much as a meter away to contract muscle. This represents an extreme challenge for a single microscopic cell and is the very signal interrupted by the disease process in ALS. Participants look to the rapidly evolving knowledge of axon dynamics to see more clearly places where potential therapy might correct the effects of the disease process.

Left to right: Chapter Board Member, Rod Nichols; The ALS Association National Chair, Allen Finkelstein; Symposium Moderator, Stephen Sclesa, MD; and Presenters Tom Maniatis, PhD and Nicholas Maragakis, MD at the New York Symposium.

Quality Care at Our ALS Centers

Several studies within the last 10 years have shown that ALS patients who receive a wide range of care at a multidisciplinary clinic have an increased chance of living longer and have an improved mental outlook. Because ALS impacts physical and psychological functioning in numerous ways, a multidisciplinary team approach to care is the most well-planned and comprehensive approach offered to patients and families. People living with ALS (PALS) in the Greater New York and northern and central New Jersey area that seek expert, multi-disciplinary, patient-centered care need to look no further than the 3 Chapter sponsored clinics: Beth Israel ALS Center in Manhattan, the ALS Clinic at Stony Brook University Hospital in Long Island and Robert Wood Johnson ALS Center in New Jersey. All 3 centers are members of the North East ALS Consortium (NEALS), which takes advances in ALS research and translates them into clinical trials for patients as rapidly as possible. PALS, caregivers, and other support persons will find that our dedicated health care professionals provide all-encompassing support which is crucial when trying to organize and cope with the numerous challenges of ALS care. Geared toward helping patients live more productively and independently, the Centers provide a coordinated program of medical treatment, rehabilitation techniques and psychological support in a warm and compassionate environment. Comprehensive assessments, diagnostic and follow-up tests, education and treatment are individualized for each patient. Clinic visits, which are scheduled quarterly, consist of time spent with the neurologist, nurse, occupational and physical therapists, speech therapist, nutritionist, respiratory therapist, and social worker, who rotate through the patient's assigned private exam room. This "one stop shop" approach spares PALS the inconvenience of multiple visits. Medical expertise, prescriptions and referrals are only a phone call or email away for our center patients between visits. Additionally, our PALS have access to cutting edge research and may participate in clinical trials. Roundtrip transportation can be provided by the Greater New York Chapter Harold and Ruth Lopatin Transportation Program for PALS who qualify. For more information visit www.als-ny.org or contact Chris Dunn at 800-672-8857. For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact our Patient Services department at 800.672.8857 or one of the ALS centers listed below.

Network of Clinical Investigators Stands Ready for ALS Trials

The ALS Association, through its TREAT ALS initiative, has put in place a partnership with the North East ALS Consortium (NEALS) to provide a network of clinical investigators that will be ready to test promising compounds in patients with ALS and provide opportunities for training of newer investigators to participate in clinical trials for ALS. Launched 2 years ago, TREAT ALS (Translational Research Advancing Therapy for ALS) is a drug discovery program and clinical trials process that accelerates discovery and testing of clinical candidates. The TREAT ALS/NEALS Clinical Trials Network will now expedite multi-center trials of compounds identified through the TREAT ALS program or any other compounds that appear to hold promise for ALS. The network will facilitate training of ALS centers including centers certified by The Association, and the existing trials network of NEALS will provide rapid translation of promising laboratory results into clinical trials. The ability to partner effectively with government, industry, and contract research organizations (CROs) is a key aspect of the TREAT ALS/NEALS Clinical Trials Network.
