Scott's Thoughts

received many affirmations of what the Lord did in our hearts and lives through our Multi-Generational emphasis. Sunday's Phenomenal Finale was a wonderful evening of praise and fellowship as we celebrated our unity and diversity. Hopefully we accomplished far more than merely a seven-week teaching series. I hope we will see a continued "cultural shift" in the way we go about ministry and mission. One element that was deeply appreciated by many was our shared meals. We will continue to encourage our entire church family to purposefully get together for dinners in various homes. Debbie Jansen mentioned a similar emphasis from another church that had a great impact on her life. "Chicken and Chatter" was the name used to describe the shared evenings. I love that name and will not hesitate to borrow it for our own ongoing activity! Something significant occurs when people cross the threshold of another person's home. Relationships grow and friendships deepen. Our goal in the coming year will be to encourage and facilitate these Chicken and Chatter gatherings! Participant will bring a dish to share as three or four families come together for an evening of food and fellowship in various homes. The host family will provide the mail dish. Participants will rotate between homes. If you would like to participate, please complete a tear-a-way slip from your worship bulletin when you come to church. We'll gather the names of interested families and coordinate these Chicken and Chatter opportunities. Our goal is to bring people together who have yet to meet. This will be a tremendous, ongoing avenue for furthering our multi-generational experience at Alsbury! Thanks, Debbie, for the GREAT idea! On Sunday, November 28, we'll begin a one-month emphasis on the international mission work of Southern Baptists. The annual Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for international missions provides 50% of the funding of denominational mission work beyond our borders. Prayerfully and sacrificially give to allow our church family to surpass our goal of $7,500! Phyllis and I fully intend to give and we hope you will too. I am so deeply thankful for the privilege of serving the Lord as Alsbury's senior pastor. You are a blessing to my life! I look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

Children's Church is offered during the 9:15 hour. Children small groups meet at the 9:15 and 10:30 hours. Youth small groups meet during the 10:30 hour. Adult small group bible studies are offered during the 9:15 and 10:30 hours.

There will be no activities at Alsbury on Wednesday, November 24 as families prepare for Thanksgiving celebrations. C.O.W. (Church On Wednesday) will resume on December 1 at 6:30 pm. The final C.O.W. of 2010 will take place on December 15. We will celebrate that night with the annual Alsbury Kids Christmas Party! preparation for the coming of our Savior, Christ. Is that where your heart is today? In over a month and a half we will celebrate the birth of the greatest gift ever to walk this planet. On Sunday, November 28, we begin preparing our hearts in anticipation of the birth of God's son, our only hope of freedom from sin in our incapable state and human effort. As we celebrate that hope, love, joy, and peace may our hearts echo with that of the psalmist. This December may we wait with our whole beings. For in our Lord is unfailing love and full redemption. We anxiously prepare for a baby born to redeem us all from sin. Your brother in Christ, Brock Songs we worship with: -Exalted/Yahweh (Chris Tomlin) -Lead Me to the Cross (Brooke Fraser/Hillsong) -Majesty (Charlie Hall) These songs can be found at

Out of the depths I cry to you, LORD; 2 Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. 3 If you, LORD, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand? 4 But with you there is forgiveness, so that we can, with reverence, serve you. 5 I wait for the LORD, my whole being waits, and in his word I put my hope. 6 I wait for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning. 7 Israel, put your hope in the LORD, for with the LORD is unfailing love and with him is full redemption. 8 He himself will redeem Israel from all their sins. Psalm 130: 1-8 (NIV)

The end of the year fast approaches. I am uncertain what kinds of feelings and thoughts that idea prompts in you, but no matter the destination of your mind as you gaze ahead to the close of 2010, let me encourage you to remember some crucial things. The end of November is the start of the Advent season for our church and many around the world. Advent finds its roots in liturgical traditions that are not particularly common to Baptist circles, but the richness of the intent of such tradition is worth noting in the case of Advent. In short, Advent is the time of

Parents' Night Out

This month our ministry to families with specialneeds children takes place on the last Saturday of November (November 27) from 5 to 8. Parents get much-needed respite while their children enjoy three hours of recreation and playtime with new friends. In December we will provide parents who rarely get the opportunity to celebrate New Year's Eve with a date night! On December 31st we'll give our PNO parents that treat! This is a great place for meaningful ministry! Contact Keara Kirk at [email protected] for information. You can enroll your children or you can commit to serve! You'll be glad you did!

Saturday, November 27, 5 to 8

Fifty percent of the funding for international mission work by Southern Baptists is received through the annual Lottie Moon Christmas Offering. Our 2010 offering goal is $7,500. If our support averages $20 per person we will easily meet our goal! Prayerfully give to the Lottie Moon Offering in December.

2011 Church Budget Preparations

Committees and councils should be working on their budgetary needs for the coming year. Scott Sharman will gladly help your team develop a reasonable and productive budget if needed!

International Missions Work

A trip to Reynosa, Mexico is stilled planned for late December, 2010. Most churches who partner with the Reynosa orphanage have canceled their support trips because of the violence in Mexico. The orphanage is a great distance away from where drug cartel violence has occurred. Our mission team remains committed to going and has the support of our Missions Council. We will purchase Christmas gifts for each orphan at a cost of $20 per child. A return to Morogoro, Tanzania, Africa is also planned for July, 2011. Pray about how you can join others from Alsbury in international missions.

Every Sunday a team of watchmen keep an eye on the church property, keeping our people safe as they gather for worship and discipleship. Jim Francisco is looking for a few new team members. You can serve on a rotation basis. Your job is simply to be the eyes and ears of the Alsbury family. Contact Jim at [email protected]

Our consistent support of our church budget allows for continued ministry and missions through Alsbury Baptist Church. As we give to the Lord through the Alsbury budget we make a difference both today and for generations to come.
