HNE/ENVS 20-Year Anniversary

BLUE & GOLD MAKE GREEN! Celebrating the HNE/ENVS 20-Year Anniversary

The Human and Natural Ecology (HNE) Program at Emory began under the leadership of Dr. Larry Ragsdale in the late 1980's, with its first degree awarded in 1991. HNE was initially offered as a co-major, but transitioned to a full-fledged major in 1995. Over the years since, the program has evolved and matured into a full Environmental Studies (ENVS) Department incorporating HNE and Geosciences faculty and now awarding both undergraduate degrees and a joint masters degree with the School of Public Health. The program is still grounded in its interdisciplinary roots, but has 20 dedicated ENVS faculty. This year marks 20 years of graduates from this field of study at Emory and will be celebrated during Homecoming with a host of green-focused activities. Carlos Museum Special Exhibit

Ongoing | Special Exhibit: Life and Death in the Pyramid Age: the Emory Old Kingdom Mummy | Michael C. Carlos Museum

Emory's Old Kingdom mummy, acquired from excavations at Abydos in Middle Egypt by Emory Theology Professor William A. Shelton in 1920, comes from the twilight of Egypt's Pyramid Age. More than 4,000 years old, it is the oldest Egyptian mummy in the Western Hemisphere. Examinations on the Old Kingdom mummy at Emory Hospital and in the Carlos Museum's conservation lab reveal much about the little understood origins of mummification in Egypt using modern scientific procedures such as CT-scanning and radiocarbon dating. Through approximately 120 objects Life and Death in the Pyramid Age will explore the social and political changes that marked the end of the Pyramid Age. The exhibition will chronicle the development of Abydos, the burial site, and the cult of Osiris, shedding light on ancient Egyptian rites and rituals regarding the afterlife. With a link to the current excavations where the Old Kingdom mummy was found nearly a century ago, this exhibition records a significant turning point in ancient Egyptian history. · Text "Mummy" to 99699 for more information (Msg. & Data rates may apply) · Open to all · $8/Adults; $6/ Students, Seniors, and Children 6-17 yrs.; Free for Emory University Students, Faculty, and Staff, Carlos Museum Members, and Children 5 and under · carlos.emory.edu

... Songs of Aspiration, Hope, and Progress

First Congregational Church, Meridian Herald, and Emory University present the 2011 Atlanta Music Festival: Songs of Aspiration, Hope, and Progress, September 21-24, 2011. This significant collaboration will involve the Atlanta community through dialogue, master classes for young musicians, a dramatic re-creation of the inaugural performance of James Weldon Johnson's "Lift Every Voice and Sing," and a climactic concert featuring opera star and Atlanta native Indra Thomas, the Honorable Andrew Young as narrator, the Chancel Choir of First Congregational Church, the Morehouse College Glee Club, and the Meridian Chorale. History: In 1909, African Americans were denied admittance to the Metropolitan Opera Company's tour performances in Atlanta. Their response was the creation of the "All Colored Music Festival," which featured the most celebrated African American concert artists of the day, including Roland Hayes, Harry T. Burleigh, and Sisserati Patti. Having been excluded from opera week, the festival organizers invited the white community, who came in strong numbers. The Atlanta community will come together again through these events to commemorate our shared history, celebrate our progress, and lay claim to an inclusive, reconciled future. One hundred years later, we are still singing, but now together, advancing the "hope that the present has brought us." For more information, please visit www.atlantamusicfestival.org.
