PUBLISHERS' SAMPLE AND CANVASSING BOOKS Issued prior to the year 1877 in the collections of The American Antiquarian Society and the University of Pennsylvania (formerly) Michael Zinman

Compiled from cataloguing records of the American Antiquarian Society and from Canvassing books, sample books, and subscription publishers' ephemera, 1833-1951 in the collection of Michael Zinman, compiled by Keith Arbour (Ardsley, N.Y.: Haydn Foundation, 1996.) This listing does include prospecti or subscription papers which lack blank pages for subscribers' signatures, plus at least two of the following three samples of text pages, illustrations, and bindings. Note: Those located at the University of Pennsylvania are indicated by the Zinman item number used in Arbour's work. Marcus A. McCorison + 1810 + A] Day, Thomas To the gentlemen at the bar of the County of [blank]. The complaint that law books are excessively dear, is universal, and too well founded. There my be good reasons why such as are imported should, at this time, be charged high, but most of those reasons are inapplicable to such as are printed in this country. ... Thomas Day. Hartford, (Con.), April 1, 1810. ¶ Caption title ¶ [16] pp., 8vo., unpaged; 23 cm.¶ MiU-C This sample book is included in this list because it is the earliest example of a true book salesman's (or book canvasser's) sample book (or "dummy") that I have located. It was formerly in the hands of an Ohio agent of Day's, the publisher. It contains prospectuses for East's Reports in the Kings Bench in 9 vols., 8vo., at 3 dollars fifty cents per vol.; Bosanquet's and Pullen's Reports in 3 vols.; and Coke upon Littleton in 4 vols. royal 8vo. Pages [3-5] carry signatures of subscribers to East and to Bosanquet who resided in the Ohio towns of Lancaster, Marietta, Chillicothe, Gallipolis, &c. Pages [7-8] bear signatures of subscribers to Coke upon Littleton (many being the same as above) in the same towns (such as William Woodbridge of Marietta), as well as the signature of Lewis Cass of Zanesville. Pages [9-16], (lvs. 5-8) are imprinted with sample pages from Coke. Day complains that importers charge whatever the market will bear, driving up costs of law books beyond the reach of many purchasers. Furthermore, should an American printer issue a law book, his competitors immediately print their own version of the same, thereby spoiling the market for all.
