History of Ductile Iron

Grey Iron is being produced since hundreds of years. In1948,amajoreventoccuredwhensmallamountof magnesiumwereaddedtomoltencastiron. ItwasfoundthattheFlakyGraphitewerechanged to spheroidal shape, accordingly all mechanical propertiesofthemetalwerechanged,thenewmetal is called Ductile Iron.

This gray cast iron pipeline was in service for more than 330 years. Today such pipes are manufactured from ductile iron. Ductile iron possesses all excellent properties of gray cast iron. Furthermore it has much better mechanical properties.

In the previously used Grey Iron the carbon was present in flake form, rendering the material brittle.

In ductile iron the graphite particles appear as small spheres, eliminating any risk of crack propagation. The material is no longer brittle. It is strong and ductile.

Zinc Coating All SADIP pipesandfittingsarecoatedexternally by pure metallic zinc at the rate of 200g/m2which represents50%increaseoverISOstandards,then zinciscoveredbyabituminouspaintof120microns. Oneoftheparticularfeaturesofzinccoatingisits capacityforrestoringthecontinuityoftheprotective layeratpointswhereitislocallydamaged. Thezn++ionsmigratetoplugthedamagedareaand arethenconvertedintostableinsolublezincproductas shownbelow. ZinccoatingisconsideredthebuiltinCathodic Protectionduetothehugeamountofzincdistributed uniformlyalloverthepipe.Thetablebelowshowsthe amountofzincinkgsover1kmofthepipe.

Assembly of Push-On Joint

Themethoddescribedbelowisgivenasanexample. Themethodofmakingthejointandequipmentused mayvary,providingofcoursethattheprinciplesof assemblingandrecommendationsspecifiedwillbe strictlyobserved.

Cutting Pipes

Pipes must be cut on site as infrequently as possible byusingdisc-typecutter.Suchoperations,which requireparticularcare,mustbecarriedoutwithout fail in a plane perpendicular to the pipe axis.
