How to Pray Effectively

The key scripture for this week's topic of discussion is found in James 5:16. "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." In order for "Prayer for a Change" to make a change and impact our nation, the prayers we offer up to God must be effective, they must be fervent, and it is an absolute necessity that our prayers "avail much". We are going to look at several keys to prayer as outlined in the Word of God to ensure we know how to pray effectively. Pray in the Will of God, Don't Ask Amiss - In James 4:2-3, it says "Ye have not, because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss." This means that many times we go without simply because we do not ask God. But when we do ask, we still go without because we ask amiss... or out of the Will of God. We ask "that [we] may consume it upon [our] lusts" or our own selfish desires. Bishop Kenneth Ulmer of the Faithful Central Bible Church in Inglewood, CA once said that the world's mentality is "to GIVE to GET", but the Kingdom mentality is "to GIVE to GET to GIVE." He went on to say that "God will get the blessing TO YOU, if He knows He can get the blessing THROUGH YOU." God is interested in the motive behind the gift, the motive behind the request. That is why when we ask anything of God, it should be with the right intent. Many Christian organizations have posed the question "What is the chief end of man?". The response: To Glorify God and enjoy Him forever. Therefore, everything we do, everything we think, everything we ASK should be to Glorify God. When Jesus taught us to pray in the eleventh chapter of Luke, He said "Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven." When Jesus was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, He said "Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done." (Luke 22:42). I thank God for His "nevertheless". I can imagine Jesus thinking (since He knew the beginning from the end), "Father, I don't want to do this. I already see the pain, I see the beating, I see the pure agony... I just don't want to do this." Then, as He was looking into the cup that was before Him. He looked down through the centuries, and He saw me, standing in the need of something only He could give me. And the love that only my Abba Father has for me overtook Him, and "Nevertheless"... Sometimes God's Will is not easy. Sometimes our desires do not line up with the Will of God. That's why Psalm 37:4 says "Delight thyself also in the LORD: and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart." When you delight yourself in God, He will change the desires of your heart. That's why the Word says, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Seek God, Seek His righteousness, (remember the prayer of the righteous man availeth much)... once you do this, THEN all these things shall be added... Pray God's Word Back to Him - This is something that Pastor William C. Chillis (my pastor) of Rhema Cathedral of Deliverance in Houston, TX always tell us to do. In Jeremiah 1:12, God says "I will hasten my word to perform it." When I first started doing this, I felt like I was being disrespectful to God. My prayers were "God you said I was the lender and not the borrower", "God you said I was above and not beneath"... I felt like I was being demanding. But God spoke to me and said, "It's not being demanding. You are letting me know that you know who I am. That you believe that what I say is true." God said "[My Word] shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it." (Isaiah 55:11) God's Word will NEVER fail. That is why it is vitally

important that we find a scripture (rightly divided 2 Timothy 2:15) for every prayer we offer up. The reason I added the "rightly divided" portion is that you can find a scripture to justify anything. Finding a rightly divided scripture, brings us to our final point... Ensure Your Prayers Line up with the Word of God - God is a God of Unity (Ephesians 4:1-6). The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit are always united. He is not the author of confusion. Therefore, if the Word of God says it, the Will of God will be in agreement. In John 15:7, it says "If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you." By ensuring our prayers are backed by scripture (again, rightly divided), we can be assured that we are praying in God's Will and will see the manifestation of His Promises. Pray for God's Will to be done, Pray that He will be glorified, Pray His Word back to Him, make sure your prayers line up with the Word of God.. and when you are offering up your requests ALWAYS have a "Nevertheless" in your Spirit. Prayer for a Change Lord, we come to you today, because we believe that pray does change things. Your word lets us know that "the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." God, we ask you today to purify our motives for prayer, make them holy, make them righteous. Let our motives glorify you. We know, God, that your will is what's best for us. We recognize today are dire need for more of you. We acknowledge, Lord, that without you, we can doing nothing, but, with you, all things are possible. God we need you more today than we have ever needed you before. We ask, Lord, that you would teach us to pray effectively. That you would give us a desire to pray without ceasing. We know that you are El Roi, the God who sees. You see right where we are and you see exactly what we need. I ask, Lord, that you would give us a greater hunger and thirst for you, for your righteousness. I ask, God, that you give us a Kingdom mentality. Lord, do a work in ME. Make me, Lord. Mold me... into the Woman of God that you have ordained me to be before the foundations of the world. You are the potter and I am the clay. Take away anything that is in me, that is not like you. Let me be crucified with you, Let my flesh die, so I can be pleasing to you and walk upright before you. Lord, help our nation. We declare and decree that the United States of America is One Nation, Under God, and it is In God We Trust. Bring us back to you. We rebuke the enemy in the Name of Jesus. I rebuke every unspeakable act that the enemy has tricked this society into accepting. Abortion, the Lord Rebuke you. Homosexuality, the Lord Rebuke you. Pornography, the Lord Rebuke you. Satan, you have had your fun, now its time for you to go. The blood of Jesus is against you. You have no rights and no authority here, and you have trespassed long enough! Lord, help our pastors and leaders. Give them to boldly declared the Your Word. With you, there are no gray areas. Right is Right, and Wrong is Wrong. There is either holy or unholy... Righteous or Unrighteous. Let your Word resound from the pulpits across this Great Nation like never before. Strengthen our leaders, O God. Speak to them. Speak through them. Send your Word with Power and with Might, but most importantly by YOUR SPIRIT. Lord, as we embark on this Prayer for a Change. Cover our children, Cover our families, Cover our friends, with the blood of Jesus. Cover everything connected to us. Raise up a hedge of protection, rebuke the enemy. Hem us in, Lord, behind and before as we wage war in the spirit and waive the bloodstained banner of VICTORY... IN THE NAME OF JESUS. AMEN. IT IS SO.
