Avoiding urine marking by cats

There are some practical steps that you can take to help stop your cat urine marking in your house.

Neutering

Arrange for all cats in the home to be neutered.

Reduce conflict or stress

· Inmulti-cathouseholds,resourcessuchasfeedingstations,watersources, litterboxes (litter trays) and resting perches should be plentiful and distributed throughouttheenvironment.Thereshouldalwaysbeasmanyresourcestationsas there are cats, plus one additional resource station. · Ifintercataggression/tensionseemstobecontributingtothemarkingbehaviour, periodic(4­6hoursperday)orfullsegregation/separationofthecatsmaybe helpful.Alternatively,abellcollarononeormorecatsmayallowthecatstoseparate themselveswithintheenvironmentanddecreaseantagonisticencounters. · Discouragefree-roamingcatsfromspendingtimeonyourpropertybyremovingany attractants such as food sources or bird feeders. · Blockvisualizationoffree-roamingoutdoorcatsbyclosingblindsorcreatingvisual barriers.

Reduce the attractiveness of marked areas

· Tacticsincludeplacingaluminiumfoil,upside-downcarpetrunners,double-sided stickytapeorcitrusscentsatpreviouslytargetedspots. · However,thisoftenfailsascatstendjusttorelocate,especiallyiftheunderlying motivation is not addressed.

Create an acceptable spraying spot

Maintain litterbox hygiene

· Scoopwastefromlitterboxesdaily. · Changelitterboxesweekly.

Cleaning

· Cleansoiledareaswithanenzymaticcleanser. · Rinsethoroughlyanddryifapplyingapheromoneproductafterwards.

Medication

· Drugtherapymayberecommendedbyyourveterinarysurgeontocontrolurine marking. · Followtheveterinarysurgeon'streatmentrecommendations.
