AVSR1 Puts People Back To Work

On 2,100 acres of the former Larson Ranch near 170th Street and Highway 138, First Solar is putting people back to work building the largest solar generating plant in Los Angeles County. Today more than 180 workers are involved in all the aspects of construction, including the installation of posts, tilt brackets, and rails that will hold more than 3.5 million First Solar photovoltaic modules. When complete in 2013, the AVSR 1 facility will generate enough electricity to power 75,000 average California homes.

Worker Spotlight Javier Pomposo, Civil Supervisor

Javier is a site supervisor from Fairmont responsible for seeing that work crews have the materials and equipment they need. "I enjoy going to work every day and being able to provide for my family," said Javier. Project Update

Recent benchmarks include: About 25% of site preparation is complete with 90,493 posts and 6,300 feet of conduit installed on more than 356 acres. 90% of the temporary fence screening is installed for Phase 1. The coiled anti-perch wire that resembled concertina wire has been removed and an alternative has been identified. $25 million has been committed to California vendors to date and another $20 million is anticipated. Commenced demolition of the old farmhouse south of Highway 138, across from the fenced AVSR1 site. Since the start of construction in July 2011, AVSR1 has logged over 167,000 man-hours without a lost time injury.

James Lamon, First Solar's Senior Vice President of Engineering, Procurement and Construction, explained to a group of community leaders last month that First Solar is deeply committed to hiring locally for AVSR1. As of early February, 30 residents of the communities of Antelope Acres, Fairmont, Neenach, and Oso have jobs at the site, representing 16 percent of the on-site workforce. Counting these local residents there are 114 workers from the Greater Antelope Valley representing 61% of the AVSR1 workforce. First Solar is always looking to hire locally and encourages applicants to contact First Solar for opportunities as the velocity of construction increases during the next few months.

About AVSR1

Antelope Valley Solar Ranch One (AVSR1) is a 230 megawatt (MW) photovoltaic solar power plant currently in construction th near the intersection of 170 Street and Highway 138. When construction is complete, AVSR1 will provide enough clean, renewable energy for about 75,000 average California homes while displacing approximately 140,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year--the equivalent of taking about 30,000 cars off the road. Construction began in July 2011 after several years of planning and permitting. Construction will continue for the next two years with portions of the project becoming operational in 2012.
