P.L.(ENG) DEFINED SCOPES APPROVED BY BOARD OF EXAMINERS

Following are examples of defined scopes of practice that the APEGA Board of Examiners has approved for Professional Licensees (Engineering). Scopes for individuals will vary, even within the same discipline; however, the scopes below may be used as a guideline in developing scopes of practice. It is important that the defined scope of practice accurately describes the applicant's knowledge and abilities, and falls within the scope of engineering.

CHEMICAL

1) Within the discipline of Chemical Engineering: The process design of oil and gas gathering, production and processing facilities using process simulation software, equipment/instrument sizing design tools and specifications, development of PFD/P&ID drawings and other related process design documents. 2) Within the discipline of Chemical Engineering: Design and specification of piping systems, separation equipment, storage tanks and flare stacks in oil and gas production facilities and wellsites. 3) Within the Discipline of Chemical Engineering: Design and direct the implementation of surface well site facilities, including associated gathering, disposal, gas processing and compression facilities. 4) Within the discipline of Chemical Engineering: Supervise and participate in the process engineering development, evaluation, design, implementation, operation troubleshooting, monitoring and optimization programs utilized within the oil and gas industry.

CIVIL

1) Within the discipline of Civil Engineering: Design, evaluation, testing, repair, restoration and inspection of building envelope systems for new and existing buildings and structures. 2) Within the discipline of Civil Engineering: Inspecting, reporting on and project management for the maintenance of road bridges. Design of maintenance and rehabilitation projects for road bridges. 3) Within the discipline of Civil Engineering: Managing, planning, reporting on, supervising and directing the development, construction and maintenance operation of commercial and institutional buildings. Verify the structural loads and design procedures, loads and effects, limit state design, working stress design in accordance with all applicable building codes. 4) Within the discipline of Civil Engineering: Planning, designing, reporting on and construction supervison of sanitary and storm water collection systems, water distribution systems, site development and local roadways for residential, commercial and industrial land development projects. 5) Within the discipline of Civil Engineering: Design and specify structures for and direct the construction and maintenance of aerial and underground electrical utility distribution systems.

6) Within the discipline of Civil Engineering: Designing and reporting on the development, construction and inspection of roadways, water distribution systems, sanitary and storm sewer collection systems and earthwork for roadways and site grading. 7) Within the discipline of Civil Engineering: Design, inspect and report on the construction and maintenance of steel support structures and steel and concrete foundations within industrial facilities. 8) Within the discipline of Civil Engineering: Planning, designing and reporting on roadways, including associated intersection improvement, stormwater management, earthwork, site grading and utility relocations. 9) Within the discipline of Civil Engineering: Designing and reporting on the development, construction, maintenance and operations of roadways. 10) Within the Discipline of Civil Engineering: Design and construction management of: site grading, geometric design and construction management of roadways, gravity sanitary sewers, storm water collection and water distribution systems. 11) Within the discipline of Civil Engineering: Designing, inspecting, reporting on and directing the development, construction, maintenance and operation of earthworks, urban and rural roadways and gravity, sanitary and storm sewer collection systems. 12) Within the discipline of Civil Engineering: Designing, analysing and reporting on sanitary sewage collection, water distribution and stormwater collection systems that serve municipal, industrial, institutional and commercial facilities. Undertake river flood risk assessments and analysis. 13) Within the Discipline of Civil Engineering: Design of earth works, and road, highway and railway systems including associated drainage facilities and managing, reporting on and directing their construction. 14) Within the discipline of Civil Engineering: Planning, designing, reporting on and construction supervision of sanitary sewer collection, water distribution, storm water collection and drainage systems, local roadways and earthworks for site grading.

ELECTRICAL

1) Within the discipline of Electrical Engineering: Design of low voltage and medium voltage power and control systems for oil and gas, pumpstation and refinery facilities. 2) Within the discipline of Electrical Engineering: Design of telecontrol/SCADA and control systems for electrical utility systems, substations, transmission and distribution systems.

3) Within the Discipline of Electrical Engineering: Design, inspect, specify, advise, evaluate and report on up to medium voltage electrical systems for the purpose of construction, maintenance and operation as they apply to institutional, industrial, commercial and residential buildings. 4) Within the Discipline of Electrical Engineering: Design, commissioning and analysis of automation, control and safety systems, data acquisition and communication systems and low voltage electrical power and control systems. 5) Design and implementation of low voltage electrical power systems and control systems for industrial facilities. 6) Within the Discipline of Electrical Engineering: Design low-voltage power distribution and associated control systems for industrial facilities. 7) Within the discipline of Electrical Engineering: Design, specification, programming, configuration, implementation and commissioning of control systems (DCS, PLC), Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) control systems, data communications systems for industrial facilities. 8) Within the discipline of Electrical Engineering: Design and specification development for transmission substation and isolated generation facilities including protection, control and layout. 9) Within the discipline of Electrical Engineering: Design and implementation of low and medium voltage electrical power and control systems for oil, gas and industrial facilities. Design and implementation of electrical heat tracing systems for industrial facilities. 10) Within the discipline of Electrical Engineering: Design of medium and low voltage power, control and instrumentation systems for oil and gas production and storage facilities. 11) Within the discipline of Electrical Engineering: Design of medium and low voltage electrical power and control systems for oil and gas facilities. 12) Within the discipline of Electrical Engineering: Design, study and report on electrical protection and control systems for electric utility substations and generation facilities. Design and specify excitation and governor control systems for generation facilities. 13) Within the Discipline of Electrical Engineering: Design of low voltage (<600V) power and control circuits; design, specification, programming, configuration, implementation and commissioning of instrumentation and control systems for industrial facilities.

INSTRUMENTATION

1) Design, specification and commissioning of control, communication, data acquisition, instrumentation and related low voltage power systems. 2) Design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of industrial instrumentation, automated control and SCADA systems for oil, water and industrial facilities. 3) Design of instrumentation and control systems for natural gas and liquid transportation systems. 4) Design and implementation of instrumentation and control systems associated with oil and gas production and processing facilities, upgraders, refineries and chemical plants. 5) Within the discipline of Instrumention: Configuration, installation, and commissioning of control systems (DCS, PLC) for refining and petrochemical facilities. 6) Specification, design, implementation, troubleshooting and audit of measurement and control instruments and systems associated with oil and gas production and processing facilities, upgraders, refineries and chemical plants. 7) Within the discipline of Instrumentation: Design, programming and configuration, commissioning, start-up and maintenance of control systems, safety shut down systems and data communication systems for industrial processing facilities. 8) Within the discipline of Instrumentation: Design, specification and implementation of instrumentation and control systems for upgrader and refining facilities. 9) Design, specification, configuration and implementation of instrumentation and control systems for petrochemical and oil and gas facililties. 10) Wtihin the Discipline of Instrumentation: Design of instrumentation and control systems for oil and gas facilities. 11) The design of instrumentation systems pertaining to processes within the oil and gas industry.

MATERIALS 1) Within the Discipline of Materials Engineering: Design, interpret and manage

quality systems including procedures and specifications in the procurement, inspection, fabrication, installation and maintenance of pressure equipment and piping for the petrochemical industry.

MECHANICAL

1) Within the Discipline of Mechanical Engineering: Design and manufacture of downhole stimulation and production tools for the completion of oil and gas wells using design pressure criteria of 105 MPa and less. 2) Within the discipline of Mechanical Engineering: Design and specification of mechanical packaging of electronic equpment for industrial and military applications, including modification as required for integration to mobile and static platforms. 3) Within the discipline of Mechanical Engineering: Design of lifting and support systems and specification of transportation devices. 4) Design, application and processing of high strength, heat treated, steel products for automotive and off road suspensions and agricultural applications. 5) Within the discipline of Mechanical Engineering: Designing of, reporting on and commissioning of mechanical systems (HVAC, plumbing, site services, and fire protection layout) for institutional, residential and commercial facilities which are not classified as `high buildings' as defined by the `Alberta Building Code'. 6) Within the discipline of Mechanical Engineering: Designing, substantiating, directing and reporting on the installation of modifications or repairs on aircraft or aeronautical products. 7) Within the discipline of Mechanical Engineering: The design, construction, maintenance and specification of piping and pipeline systems for industrial, chemical, oil and gas facilities. 8) Within the discipline of Mechanical Engineering: Application and installation design for non-road mobile and stationary engines, transmissions and appurtenances. 9) Within the discipline of Mechanical Engineering: Design and specification of piping systems, specification and selection of pressure equipment, pumps, and compressors for oil and gas production facilities. 10) Within the discipline of Mechanical Engineering: Designing of, reporting on and commissioning of mechanical systems (HVAC and related controls, plumbing, site services and fire protection layout) for commercial, institutional, residential and industrial buildings.

METALLURGICAL

1) Within the discipline of Metallurgical Engineering: Design, specify, supervise and inspect the fabrication methods and weld procedures for the construction, repair or alteration of pressure equipment, pressure piping and related steel structures for the oil and gas industry. 2) Within the discipline of Metallurgical Engineering: Review and develop welding procedure specifications and procedure qualification records for compliance to ASME/CWB regulations.

3) Within the Discipline of Metallurgical Engineering: Report on and develop preventive and predictive maintenance programs including inspection and corrosion mitigation plans; specify design, fabrication and inspection criteria for the repair or modification to pressure equipment, piping systems and associated components for petrochemical and oil and gas facilities. 4) Within the discipline of Metallurgical Engineering: Material and consumable selection, weldability analysis, preparation of welding procedure specifications, design and evaluation of destructive and non-destructive testing applications for industrial facilities.

PETROLEUM

1) Within the discipline of Petroleum Engineering: Oil and gas well test design and analysis; Planning, design and analysis of primary, secondary and tertiary recovery schemes for new and existing oil and gas reservoirs by using conventional reservoir engineering techniques and reservoir simulation; Oil and gas reserves assessment and economic analysis. 2) Within the discipline of Petroleum Engineering: Planning, evaluating and advising on the appraisal, development and production of primary recovery schemes, new and existing sweet service oil and gas reservoirs. 3) Within the Discipline of Petroleum Engineering: Economic and reserves evaluation of proven and probable oil and natural gas pools as well as assessment of unconventional coal bed methane resources. 4) Within the discipline of Petroleum Engineering: Economic evaluations of proven, probable and unproven oil, natural gas, and by-product reserves, including reserves evaluation of various secondary and tertiary recovery schemes. 5) Within the discipline of Petroleum Engineering: Provide welltest analysis, modeling, and interpretation services. Analyses include: pressure transient, deliverability, productivity, rate transient, production decline, tubing performance, and bottom hole pressures. Also provide advice on welltesting, and recommendations based on analytical results. 6) Within the discipline of Petroleum Engineering: Design and specification of operating conditions for oil and gas pipelines for upstream gathering, wellsite surface and subsurface facilities. 7) Within the discipline of Petroleum Engineering: Design and implementation of strategies for natural gas production enhancement using optimized wellbore tubulars and remedial artificial lift technology.

8) Within the Discipline of Petroleum Engineering: Design and implementation of oil

and gas well drilling, completion, work-over, artificial lift, optimization and abandonment projects.
