LLB (Hons) Law

The LLB (Hons) Law is a three-year, full- time programme. It is an internal Law Degree awarded by Staffordshire University, UK that is identical to the LLB (Hons) Law programme offered on campus in the UK. Graduates of the LLB (Hons) Law degree will be eligible to qualify as Attorneys-at-Law to practice in Sri Lanka after successful completion of the Sri Lanka Law College examinations. Graduates may also qualify as Solicitors or Barristers in England after completing the relevant professional studies and training requirements set by the respective professional bodies. Year 1 of the programme focuses on the study of legal sources and institutions as well as study skills relevant to Law including the use of appropriate information technology. The LLB core modules learnt in Year 1 and Year 2 provide the foundation principles of legal knowledge. These include a detailed study of the Law of Contract, Criminal Law, Tort, Land Law, European Community Law and Equity and Trusts. In the final year, students will have the opportunity to choose four modules from a set of optional modules taking into consideration their interests and career aspirations.

Admission Requirements

The minimum qualifications required for admission are 2 Passes at GCE (Advanced Level) Examination and 5 Passes, inclusive of Credit Passes for English and Sinhala/Tamil, at GCE (Ordinary Level) Examination. Students with pending A/L results may also apply. Those with additional qualifications may receive advanced entry to higher levels of the programme. (Please contact Student Counselors for details.)

Programme Structure

Teaching and learning is based primarily upon lectures, tutorials and workshops. Whilst lectures are very important, the main emphasis is on tutorials and workshops that promote group as well as independent learning. Workshops take a variety of forms: discussions, individual and group presentations, or tasks such as dealing with a previously unseen problem or interviewing and advising a client. These develop both legal capabilities and skills such as interviewing and problem solving. Level 1 The Level 1 is a one-year full-time programme. Career Opportunities

Graduates will be able to enter the employment market with the advantage of strong legal skills and will be equipped to embark on the further stages of training for a professional career as Barristers or Solicitors in the UK and Attorneys-at-Law in Sri Lanka, after successful completion of the professional studies and training requirements set by the respective professional bodies. Alternatively, LLB (Hons) Law graduates may pursue careers as Legal Executives, Company Secretaries, Human Resource Managers, Educationalists, Consultants and Researchers.
