Three Layers To Consider When Installing an App

Configuration Using screens, techniques documented with the product for how to configure/adjust/adapt the product

-

ALWAYS safe; ALWAYS upgrades; Do as much as you want

Extension Adding new forms, workflow, and even fields. The key is it is ADDITIVE to any logic supplied out of the box

-

ALMOST always safe; ALMOST always upgrades; Use this technique as needed for integration; Consider this technique if need to adjust the application in a way that is not supported by configuration Avoid if at all possible; Can cause problems with upgrades; Always see if it can be done as an extension first; If customize, carefully document and FOLLOW THE RULES Never reuse a field for a different purpose Don't change workflow copy, disable original, and modify your copy Change permissions by adding new groups not by changing existing permissions

Customization Making a change to any out of the box fields or workflow

Atrium in BMC

Atrium is the platform for BSM

-

Operating System for BSM

EVERYTHING must use Atrium technologies

-

Products from BMC needing functionality that is covered by Atrium are directed to use Atrium and NOT develop their own version

5

BMC Atrium Future

More capability Increased focus Going forward, will likely add

-

SRM Common "subsystems" Tasking, Costing, Notification Subscription are all good candidates

New attention to documenting best practices and use cases to the feature list

-

I have an xxx, where does it go? How to use the classes to model things (semantics not just syntax) More is under development

R&D Team Initiatives

2007 Drive to 5

-

Simplification Faster path to value for customer Compatibility between/across solutions Out-of-the-box integration of products

2008/2009 Realize BSM (plus continue the 2007 Drive to 5)

-

End user experience Service awareness Use Atrium

Upgrade/Compatibility Philosophy

Establishing the expectation that every product follow a fundamental set of philosophies about Upgrade/Compatibility

-

AR System & CMDB follow these already and demonstrate the goal

Upgrade

-

Automated, Automatic, Retains all data (converting is OK if needed) If an AR application, follows rules to preserve as best as possible customer extensions and customizations Every product must have clear, defined interfaces Must allow things using previous interfaces to still work cleanly with you This includes subsystems which are just components of a solution Cannot require upgrade of other parallel pieces when you upgrade Can have a dependency on specific version of something you are built on

Compatibility

Themes for 7.5

AR System

-

Increase usability of the interface Expand functionality for administrators creating custom apps or managing/maintaining packaged apps Continue to meet the expanding enterprise needs of customers

CMDB

-

Wholistic view of configuration Data integrity and quality

Atrium

-

Much more than just the CMDB Focus on service model

Themes for 7.5

ITSM

-

Business awareness Look and feel/simplification Software license management and Release management

SRM

-

Provide foundation for true "one stop self-service portal" Establish SRM as the next key application for IT

SLM

-

Bringing SLM functionality that is specific to a solution cleanly into that solution rather than requiring breaking out to SLM product to see the results
