ASSESSMENT Why does Majorca attract tourists and how can the harmful effects of tourism on the island be reduced?

TASKS:

You have to: · · · find out and describe what attracts tourists to Majorca; identify some of the problems caused by tourism in Majorca; suggest ways of reducing harmful effects of tourism in Majorca.

Your assessment must follow this structure: INTRODUCTION: You must: · Give some background about Majorca (eg: size, location, tourist numbers) · Say what will be in the assessment. You should also: · Include a map to show where Majorca is in relation to the rest of Spain. ATTRACTIONS: You must: · List human and physical attractions. · Include a map of Majorca. You should also: · Explain what attracts different types of people to different parts of Majorca, eg: where would you do for a family holiday?; where would you expect 18-30 year olds to go? · Compare climate graphs of London and Majorca. You could: · Annotate photographs to show natural/human attractions. · Complete a sketch map to compare the north and south of Majorca. · Produce graphs to show what attracts people to Majorca.

PROBLEMS: You must: · Describe the bad effects/problems that tourism has bought to Majorca. You should also: · List the problems under headings such as environment, local people, visual pollution. You could: · Explain how these problems have been caused.

SOLUTIONS: You must: · Say what has been done to reduce the worst effects of tourism. · How can the real needs of local people and tourists be looked after. You should also: · Link the problems already described with specific solutions. You could: · Provide some of your OWN solutions that you could implement as a tourist officer in Majorca. · Appreciate that problems posed by tourism are a world wide problem and that as such, it is not only Majorca that faces these problems. CONCLUSION: You must: · Answer the title of the assessment, using some of the information given earlier, ie: Why does Majorca attract tourism and how can the harmful effects of tourism on the island be reduced? You should also: Refer to the aims of the study, ie: · To find out and describe what attracts tourists to Majorca. · Identify some of the problems caused by tourism in Majorca. · Suggest ways of reducing harmful effects of tourism in Majorca. You could: · Evaluate how successful Majorca has been in overcoming problems faced by tourism.

SUCCESS CRITERIA: Level 3: You have described the physical and human attractions of Majorca. You have listed some problems Majorca faces and have stated simple ways in which they can be overcome. Level 4: You have described in detail the problems caused by tourism and have described how they can be overcome. You have used at least 2 sources of information. Level 5: You have explained why different groups of people go to Majorca. You have explained why Majorca has problems and have classified these problems under headings such as social, economic, environmental. You have drawn and presented conclusions that are supported by evidence. Level 6: You have explained and evaluated different approaches to managing problems caused by tourism in Majorca. You have devised your own enquiry questions and sequence of investigation and have drawn fully substantiated conclusions. Level 7: You have independently worked on your enquiry and have evaluated your sources, eg: are they biased? You understand that any solutions may have further consequences. You have considered ideas of sustainable development when examining ways of managing problems caused by tourism.
