The Marketing Conference covers a wide array of general topics applicable to a core audience, as well as more targeted sessions on display (point of purchase) and packaging. The Product Development Technical Conference, titled "The Practical Application of Technology," presents the most exciting advances in R&D, with in-depth sessions on the latest trends in skin care, cosmetics, hair care, fragrance, personal products, aromatherapy and laboratory equipment. On Monday, Oct. 14, from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m., perfumer consultant Geraldine O'Keefe will lead a session titled "The Building Blocks of Perfumery: Note by Note." In this unique class, leading perfumers will take you through the development of a fragrance, note by note, introduce you to the genealogy of fragrances, and instruct you on writing profiles that can lead to a truly great fragrance. Then on Tuesday, from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m., session leader Suzanne B. Grayson, President, Grayson Associates, will present "Anatomy of a Lipstick: How Marketers Can Develop a Dynamite Lipstick Formula and Shade Range." All three Master Classes in the Product Development track will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 15. The day will begin at 9:00 a.m. with a three-hour class titled "Controlled Release Systems in Cosmetic and Personal Care." In this class, moderator Dr. Sam Shefer, Executive Vice President, Salvona, LLC, will instruct formulators, product development chemists, and marketers on the current state of the art of controlled release. From 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Dr. TK Shyam, Director, R&D, Arizona Natural Resources, will lead a class titled "Formulation with New Cosmeceutical and Topical Nutraceutical Ingredients." This session is geared to address the challenges facing those in the industry formulating with cosmeceutical and topical nutraceutical ingredients. The final Master Class, titled "Understanding and Using Fragrance Chemistry to Enhance Consumer Benefits" will take place from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m., and will be lead by Stephen Herman, Vice President-New Technology Development, AFF International. This session will analyze and explain the variables that lead to a commercially successful product, and include topics such as fragrance duplication and aroma chemicals, the effect of age on smell, aromatherapy, and pheromones.

ICMAD HOSTS SPECIAL CONFERENCE SESSION AND YOUNG DESIGNERS AWARDS DINNER DURING HBA GLOBAL EXPO

The Independent Cosmetic Manufacturers and Distributors (ICMAD) has planned its Young Designer Awards dinner to coincide with HBA Global Expo this year. The Young Designers Competition was created by ICMAD in 1999 to showcase the design talent in personal care packaging design. The goal of the competition is to encourage and develop young creative talent that will build the future of the cosmetics industry. Three designs will be chosen from dozens of entries submitted by students at six highly acclaimed schools of design from New York to California, judged by industry packaging and design experts. Criteria for winning packaging includes uniqueness, ability to be reproduced economically and ease of use and storage. The ICMAD winners will be honored at a dinner to be held on Tuesday, October 15 in New York City. The ICMAD will also be making a special presentation as part of the HBA Educational Program. On Tuesday, October 15th from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m., ICMAD will present, "A Global Look at Today's Import and Export Challenges." This session will be led by Pamela Viglielmo, President of The Gramercy House and will cover regulatory considerations, payment, and freight forwarding issues in doing business around the world. ` EXECUTIVES FROM ESTEE LAUDER, REVLON, AND PROCTER & GAMBLE TO BE HONORED AT THE FIRST ANNUAL INDUSTRY AWARDS DINNER

On Monday night, October 14th at the New York Hilton, major players in the cosmetic and personal care industry will be honored for their significant contributions at the First Annual HBA Industry Awards Dinner. Neil Scancarella, Executive Vice President, Research & Development for Revlon, Inc., will receive the Lifetime Achievement in Product Development Award. Mr. Scancarella has made a lifetime of contributions to the advancement of technology in the personal care and cosmetic industry. He is also being recognized by his peers for his technical competency, leadership, vision and managerial skills throughout his distinguished career. The Packaging Executive of the Year will be bestowed upon Roger Caracappa, Senior Vice President, Global Packaging, for the entire Estée Lauder Corporation. Mr. Caracappa was overwhelmingly selected by packaging suppliers in the cosmetic, personal care, and fragrance industry, for his devotion to packaging excellence throughout his career. For the past 10 years, he has spearheaded all Promotional Marketing for Estée Lauder U.S.A. and Canada as well as Marketing Operations and Merchandising for Makeup, Treatment and Fragrance. The New Product R&D Technical Team Award will be presented to Lee Ellen Drechsler, Section Manager, R&D; Tom Rabe, Principal Scientist, Global Color Cosmetics; and Ed Smith, Research Fellow, all from Procter & Gamble Cosmetics for their work on Max Factor Lipfinity and Cover Girl Outlast. These products both feature PermaTone, a unique complex of pigments and siliconebased polymers that is resistant to abrasion and virtually impervious to food oils. In addition to these Industry Awards, the Category Leaders and Grand Prize Award will be announced for the Third Annual International Package Design Awards. Gilbert Faconnage, exhibiting for the first time at HBA, is the private label division of Groupe Batteur, a French cosmetic, soap and pharmaceutical group based in Normandy.
