employees from ACE Group ditched their desks and daytimers. They were buzzing around the Philadelphia area as volunteer teams helping nonprofits of their choice -- some cleaned the park near the Philadelphia Museum of Art, others built a Habitat for Humanity home, and another team provided reading mentoring. The employee efforts reached nonprofits around the world, as 5,000 people (about half of the company's workforce) participated in 150 community projects. That special day of volunteer dedication was an extraordinary way to celebrate the company's 20th anniversary, but also indicative of the ACE Group of Companies' commitment to philanthropy. "Instead of patting ourselves on the back, we wanted to thank the communities where we work for their support," explains Eden Kratchman, executive director of the company's philanthropic arm, ACE INA Foundation. Stressing that employee engagement is key, Kratchman says: "We're getting a lot more people involved. We're asking our executives, who can help build and expand relationships with nonprofits, about nonprofit partners doing work in the community. We're making sure we're interacting with and identifying opportunities in our global markets." ACE and its employees are part of a growing trend. Corporate giving has become proactive, strategic, and focused, according to three studies released this year from the Committee to Encourage Corporate Philanthropy (CECP). When a company gives, its goal is to maximize both societal and business impact.

This report also suggests that corporate relationships with nonprofits are evolving into more in-depth, mutually beneficial partnerships. One respondent commented that some corporate philanthropy programs are considering their funding less as "grants" and more as "investments."

"The trend continues to be funding the issues we want to solve. There are a myriad of ways for corporate multi-level support."

Are arts and cultural organizations in the Greater Philadelphia Region recognizing the trend and responding with strategy that gets them a slice of the philanthropy pie? "Yes," answers Kratchman. "In the last few years, leaders in the nonprofit arts community have approached businesses, saying, `Let's look at what will work for you.' They don't use a template, soliciting everyone to do the same thing. They are tailoring what they can offer a company to bring it home." Released in February 2006, the Board of Boards Summary Report shows similar conclusions from 30 top CEOs. They reveal that although no two companies will share an identical blueprint for success, checkwriting alone cannot return full business and societal benefits. What's needed are philanthropy programs integrated with core business models. Kratchman adds, The arts community has an opportunity -- to urge businesses to capitalize on what the arts bring to the city and region, saying, `Be part of a positive trend.' Studies show that the cultural vibrancy of a region is directly linked to its economic vibrancy. Some businesses may not know that. "Strategic corporate philanthropy is growing strong roots as more businesses apply the theory and collaborate with nonprofits for mutual benefit. Arts and cultural organizations will want to determine how to best respond and attract the support they need."

According to a report, Adding It Up 2004: The Corporate Standard, published in June 2006, companies are turning their gaze inward, reevaluating their philanthropy strategy. Although much of their giving is now reactive, companies want to be increasingly proactive with their contributions, aligning them under a cohesive and unified company approach.

Business Volunteers for the Arts® Business professionals are matched on management consulting projects with arts organizations. Business On Board ® Business professionals are trained in nonprofit governance and matched with an arts board; workshops for arts organizations improve board development. Business On Call ® Business people offer behind-the-scenes, hands-on assistance to arts and cultural organizations. The Technology ConnectorsTM Software training, strategic technology planning, project support, help desk, and other tools and resources are provided to arts organizations with the participation of technology professionals and companies. Friends of the Arts Network Young business professionals participate in a wide variety of exciting cultural events. Resources Bank Matches used office furniture, equipment, and supplies donated by businesses to arts and cultural organizations that have expressed a need.

VOLUNTEERING HAS BEEN A WAY OF LIFE FOR HEATHER

Newcomb, vice president - media relations, Commerce Bank. She has taught English as a second language, served as a literacy tutor, and even worked with horses and people in physical therapy. When she considered her next volunteering commitment, she wanted it to support the arts.

"I wanted to explore and invest in Philadelphia's arts community," Newcomb explained. "Personally, I am both a photographer and a creative writer. I have a passion and interest for the arts and a larger appreciation of the role the cultural arts play in our lives and community. As a volunteer, I wanted to share my time and career experience to support the arts." After some Internet searching and word-of-mouth advice, Newcomb considered the Arts & Business Council's Business Volunteers for the Arts (BVA) program. "After talking with the Council staff, I realized that BVA would be a great fit -- a wonderful chance to lend my professional skills to arts and cultural organizations needing my specific expertise," she said.

This would result in time to focus on producing performances and programming. By spending a little time at Arts & Business Council program orientations this fall, arts/cultural staff can learn ways to find more hours in a day to effectively manage your operations. Attendees will learn about services and resources that are designed to improve organizations' capacity, enabling arts leaders to dedicate more time to missions and less on operations and management. This streamlined, comprehensive approach to delivering services essentially presents a one-stop shop for arts managers to improve operations, simplify communication, and reduce time spent managing projects and volunteers. Whether a board member, executive director, volunteer coordinator, education director, or programming manager ­ arts/cultural staff will walk away with new ideas to make managing and administration easier.

While on BVA assignments with Germantown Historical Society and Astral Artistic Services, Newcomb found the opportunity to stretch professional skills she gained during her career but does not typically have the occasion to apply in her current position. "I enjoy orchestrating focus group studies and have significant experience conducting audience research, developing moderator guides, administering interviews, and analyzing the results," she said. "Being able to utilize this expertise to

Natural Fit for Philly Natives

AFTER SEARCHING HIGH AND LOW, THE ARTS & BUSINESS

Council found top-notch talent in its own backyard! Three Philadelphia area natives have joined the staff: Craig Stover, Alyson Schwartz, and Charlotte Baloche. Craig Stover joined the Council's staff as director of technology programs & services to spearhead efforts that engage technology professionals and companies to support the region's arts and cultural organizations' technology needs. Stover brings 12 years of experience working with numerous arts and cultural organizations in the Philadelphia area, for which he has designed web sites, installed systems and networking, coordinated exhibitions, and managed administration of services. Also, Stover is an exhibiting artist, teaches and lectures at art centers throughout the region, studied at Tyler School of Art, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The University of the Arts. The Council welcomes Alyson Schwartz as vice president, business development & special initiatives, to help the organization achieve development goals, engage companies and professionals in support of Council programs, and lead the Council's region-wide initiatives that foster and promote connections between the business and arts communities. With 14 years of experience in marketing, special events, and public relations, Schwartz most recently served as vice president of marketing with the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce (GPCC). Schwartz earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Bachelor of Sciences degree in Communications from the University of Delaware. She has participated in the Council's Business Volunteers for the Arts (BVA) program and also serves as a board member of the Settlement Music School's West Philadelphia Branch. As program associate for the Council, Charlotte Baloche provides administrative and programmatic support for The Technology Connectors, Business On Call, Friends of the Art Network (FAN), and Resources Bank programs. Prior to joining the Council, Baloche worked at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she coordinated survey research of students to collect population and

The Arts & Business Council served a variety of arts and cultural organizations last year (FY2006) -- they were diverse in disciplines as well as size of operating budget.

As another way we're working to make your life a bit breezier, the Council's web site is undergoing an overhaul! Soon, arts/cultural managers and business professionals will enjoy the site's new functionality, including easier registration for events and programs, fast access to simplified online reporting, and better access to Council support.

COUNCIL BOARD WELCOMES STEPHEN BURDUMY

The Arts & Business Council of Greater Philadelphia recently appointed Stephen Burdumy to its board of directors. A partner in the DrinkerBiddle law firm, Burdumy is a managing partner in the firm and practices in its Corporate and Securities and Investment Management Groups. He has more than 20 years of experience as a corporate lawyer, handling corporate, securities, merger and acquisition, divestiture, and financing transactions.
