American Society of Plumbing Engineers Northern California Chapter

Presents the

2009 Plumbing Engineering and Design Seminars

(March 10th, Tuesday in association with Tabletop Product Show)

Seminar #1 - From 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM (.15 CEU)

Acoustics and Vibration Control for Plumbing Systems

Presented by: Steve Pettyjohn of The Acoustics & Vibration Group (TAVG) The plumbing system can be the source of one of the most intrusive, unwanted noises in high-rise apartment buildings, hospitals, hotels, and dormitories. All piping has flow-induced vibration and noise, which is transmitted by the pipe wall and the water column. It is essential, therefore, that plumbing engineers understand the terminology and theory of the field of acoustics in order to reduce the acoustical impact of the plumbing systems they design. In this session you will learn about the causes of noise and vibration in plumbing systems, noise level criteria for different types of occupancies, and system design strategies to reduce and minimize the transmission of noise and vibration from plumbing systems. Speaker Bio: Mr. Steve Pettyjohn, Principal: Steve has extensive experience in designing facilities for optimum sound quality, sound transmission loss, measuring sound, analyzing data and developing realistic solutions to sound and vibration problems. The Acoustics & Vibration Group was formed in Sacramento by Steve in 1986 and he has completed over 2000 projects encompassing a wide scope of work. Clients have included school districts, retail businesses and commercial firms, architects, engineering and mechanical companies, governments and governmental agencies, developers, contractors, churches, and hospitals. Steve received a Master of Science degree in an acoustics multi-disciplinary program in 1979 from the Georgia Institute of Technology, School of Mechanical Engineering, and he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from OSU in 1972. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Acoustics in Oregon, the only state with a test for this discipline. He also attained certification by the Institute of Noise Control Engineers in 1981 and by the Vibration Institute as Vibration Specialist III in 1994. Steve is currently a member of The Vibration Institute, Acoustical Society of America, Institute of Noise Control Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers and American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers.

Seminar #2 - From 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM (.15 CEU)

Rainwater Harvesting/Catchment System Design

Presented by: Chuck Stewart of the Jay R. Smith Company Water conservation and management is becoming a nation wide issue due to accelerating water shortages: uncontrolled development and population growth; agricultural demands; and protection of wildlife habitat. Rainwater harvesting is a technology used to collect, convey and store rain from relatively clean surfaces such as a roof for later use. This is water that would otherwise have gone down the drainage system or into the ground. Rainwater harvesting is one of the most promising alternatives for supplying water in the face of increasing water scarcity and escalating demand. The attendee will gain a sound base and understanding of the components that make up rainwater harvesting system and their proper sizing and selection. Speaker Bio: Mr. Stewart has worked at Jay R. Smith for 21 years, and was recently promoted to Products Manager. The last 8 years he was the Manager of Sales Administration and prior to that spent 13 years as a Senior Product Designer and Sales Engineer in the Engineering Department. Mr. Stewart is a current member of the American Rainwater Catchment Systems Association (ARCSA), a past member of the Southern Building Code Congress International (SBCCI), and a Charter Member ASPE's Alabama Chapter.
