28th Annual Challenge Cup Baker to Vegas Relay ­ April 21-22, 2012 Second Team Captain's M eeting, December 8, 2011 Race Coordinator Chuck Foote called the meeting to order. Teams assembled at 11:30 am for lunch. The meeting began at 12:00 noon.

He retired from the LAPD and most recently was coach Track & Cross Country at Valencia High School. Coach Pat Connelly presented the first in a series of Training lessons aimed at helping teams prepare for the race course. (See attached lesson # 1) Please contact Coach at (818) 231-1138 or e-mail at: [email protected] Team Update We stand at 280 teams and 12 on the "Waiting List" Deadline to pay Entry Fee December 15, 2011 is the final day for teams who participated in the race last year to pay the entry fee or be placed on the "Waiting List". Official Race "Tech" S hirt The deadline to send in the Team T-Shirt order form is: February 23, 2012. Academy Gift Store will be selling additional Tech shirts. Race Course comments Stage # 2 4.0 miles. (5) runners were under 7:00 min pace and (56) total under 8:00. Stage # 3 4.2 miles still a steep uphill no one under 7:00 and only (13) under 8:00. Stage # 14 10.7 miles and net gain of 845 feet (14) runners under 7:00 and 71 under 8:00. Review: Stage # 2 & 3 continue to be hard stages. The heat and low humidity prove to be the most difficult aspects of the early stages in the race.

Catcher Rule All Team Catchers will wear a Team Number. I will supply (10) Green Bib numbers to each Team Captain at the Briefing in Las Vegas or Baker. There is a (5) minute penalty for not wearing a Team Bib when catching the incoming runner. Exception: Runner number 20 race officials will supply the catcher for this runner.

Race Hotels LAPRAAC General M anager, Ruben Crane spoke and re-emphasized the importance of using the web site to book the Las Vegas Hotel formerly Hilton or the Riviera Hotels. January 19, 2012 deadline for the $89.00 room night. Check the web site. to make your hotel reservations. Hospitality Suites Hospitality suites on are also available. These suites are situated in the LVH Pavilion Area, which is adjacent to the ballroom where the award ceremony will take place. This is an excellent location for your agency to host a party prior to the awards ceremony. Every agency has a policy of its own on this subject. Here are some things to keep in mind: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. The Challenge Cup Relay donations are not deductible as a Charity. The Los Angeles Police Revolver and Athletic Club are classified as a 501 (c) 4. You can advertise for a sponsor by displaying this on your vehicles or running gear. Know the policy of your agency. Keep your commanding officer informed on a monthly basis. Keep accurate records of all income and expenses. Keep it all simple.

If you are having a Fund Raiser, we will do all possible to advertise your project. LAPD Northeast has a great idea for children's photos in uniform (see attachment). S worn Volunteer Officer Button is now activated. Entry into this race requires that each team submit a sworn volunteer officer who will work at an exchange point for a period of approximately 8-10 hours. This is one of the most important rules; failure of a sworn volunteer to report for an assignment is an automatic disqualification from the race. If your team's volunteer leaves his or her post without authorization this will lead to a severe penalty. Needless to say, your selection for this assignment is vital to your race effort.

This is the kind of volunteer I am looking for: 1. Self motivated worker 2. Reliable 3. Level headed Specialty positions 1. Light tower/generator driver. The volunteer for this position must have a vehicle capable of light towing. 2. Stage Directors. These are the officer-in-charge of Stage locations. I need veteran volunteers who can organize and deploy other officers to the various assignments. They must also be able to adjudicate any problems that occur at an exchange point. Each OIC will receive an Official Hat and T-shirt.

Due Date to submit Volunteer Form: 2-23-12 Communications Form Communication forms will be on line in January. Go to web site To all "New" teams or new Team Captains we will hold (3) of Communication seminars here at the Academy from 0900-1500. I strongly urge you to attend and learn what you can depend on to communicate on the race course. Reserve Level I & II Level II Reserves have been approved as members of any team who wishes to use them. Use of either a Level I or II reserve means a team must enter one of the Invitational categories. Runner without a Team Runners who work for large agencies must use the eligibly rule that states "A runner may run with their last area of assignment so long as their current assignment does not have a team." Keep in mind the category you choose to run in can be affected by using personnel not assigned to your station/area. Lateral Hires Rules committee met discussed and resolved an issue regarding the hiring of "Lateral Transfer employees". The Rule Book Chapter 6 section (5) states the cut-off of new employees is 12-31-11. Added to this section will be "Lateral Transfer employees" are eligible to run for their new agency so long as they are hired prior to 2-28-12. S pecial Numbers

These numbers will be printed on the decal that is attached to the running baton. I will send this to our announcer. At the Awards Ceremony, the program will include a special memorial of those who have passed away since our last race. Please refer to the (attached) M emorial Instructions. Caution Runner Ahead Sign & Team Sign Each team will provide their own "Caution Runner Ahead" sign along with their Team Number in reflective tape as per F/V rules. Teams can develop their own "Team Sign". A good reference to purchase your sign is Smitty's Sign Works in El M onte (626) 442-2164. Flashing Vest Requirement All night time runners will be required to wear an approved "Flashing Vest". We will have a supply of the vests available at the next meeting. I have researched every idea on these vests and there just are no other companies making a vest that can provide the level of safety we require. Vendor S how at the Las Vegas Hotel & Casino Awards Ceremony If you have a sponsor or know of a vendor who would like to be at the Awards Ceremony, please contact Lorri Grado at [email protected] or call (323) 221-5222 ext 203. The cost has been reduced to $600.00 per space. Vendor Operation at the Baker High S chool The Baker High School faculty, staff, and students extend every possible courtesy to the race. All of the proceeds from the vendors at this location will go directly to the school. The Challenge Cup office will be responsible for coordinating the vendors at the School. The fee for space at the site is $75.00. M ake your check payable to Baker Valley Unified School District. Baker S chool For 27 years we have supported the Baker School, it is our legacy to the children of that community. Our impact can be seen at every corner of the school. Our monetary donations go to supporting their Athletic Program. With all the cut backs from the state, the dollars we raise are vital so let's all do our part. This chart will give you a rough idea of what might be your starting time. Knowing the ability of your team is paramount to being assigned correctly and staying within the above boundaries. We will start approximately 31 teams per start time. The 3:00; 4:00 and 5:00 starts are in order of ability.

Vehicle Traffic on California Highway 127 & 178 Highway 127 from Baker to Shoshone and Hwy 178 from Shoshone to the state line will NOT be closed. This means we are going to share the highway with all other traffic. All Baker to Vegas related vehicles must have their Team Number displayed in All windows except windshield or will not be allowed to pass.

New Team Captains Seminar It is mandatory that all new teams attend this seminar. If you are a new captain of an existing team it would a good idea to attend as well. It will be at the LAPD Academy on January 11, 2012, from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. Lunch will be provided. Invocation, Color Guard & National Anthem Any department who would like to volunteer for any of these assignments should contact Chuck Foote at (323) 221-5222 ext 220.

Roster of possible runner's I will not be asking for department rosters. I will depend on you when the time comes to list your runners and alternates on the Runner Registration button. Below are the cut-off dates. This means that runners assigned to your station as of: LAPD cutoff DP # 1. Recruits who leave their academy for field assignments past this cut-of date are eligible up to the race date. Teams are made from what personnel are assigned to your station/area or agency on January1, 2012 with the exception of Lateral Transfers.

Team Plaque Every team running in the race will receive a "Finish Plaque".
