Generation No. 1

1. JAMES M.8 HOOKS (THOMAS7, THOMAS6, WILLIAM5, WILLIAM4, WILLIAM3, WILLIAM2, JOHN1 HOOKE)1,2 was born Abt. 1785 in Dublin Co., NC3. He married (2) LUCY MEEKS3 02 Jul 1848 in Upson County, Ga.4,5. She was born Abt. 18056. Notes for JAMES M. HOOKS:

************************************************************************ The assumption that James Hooks is the father of Louisa, Penelope, Ezekiel, Thomas and David is partly based on the following information. No "primary" sources have been found to confirm this assumption. ************************************************************************

Baldwin County History

Baldwin County, named after Abraham Baldwin, was created in 1803 by Creek cessions of June, 1802. The land was distributed by the 1805 Land Lottery. The Second (1807) Lottery of Georgia, Act of Legislature was passed on June 26, 1806. Four new counties were made out of parts of Baldwin: Morgan, Randolph (later to become Jasper County), Jones and Putnam. Portions of Wilkinson Co. were added in 1806, 1807, 1856 and 1872. Portions of Hancock County were added in 1807. Portions of Washington County were added in 1807, 1812 and 1826. Portions of Jones County were added in 1856. Milledgeville, named after John Milledge, was the state capital of Georgia from 1807 to 1868 & incorporated as a city in 1836. Jasper County was created December 10, 1807 from Baldwin County; number 31 in the order of creation, it was originally named Randolph County. (The present-day Randolph County was created on December 20, 1828). The name was changed December 10, 1812. Part of Jasper was set off to Morgan in 1815 and part to Newton in 1821. Jasper County was named in honor of William Jasper, who was an officer in Colonel William Moultrie's Second South Carolina Infantry, 1775. Jasper distinguished himself during the attack on Fort Moultrie, June 28, 1776 and was killed while planting the South Carolina Flag at the battle of Savannah, October 9, 1779.

Baldwin Co. Ga, Tax Digest Capt Bonnits District, 4th district Thomas owns 355 Ac. Purchased from self and (?) James Hooks is listed next with 50 ac purchased from Thomas. Tax records show Thomas having 355 arches - James is listed just after Thomas Hooks. James has 50 arches (355+50 = 405 (2 lots))

Baldwin Co., Ga. Tax Digest 1807 James Hooks and Thomas Hooks both in Baldwin Co. Ga. A note of interest is that on the 1807 Tax Digest, James Hooks is shown on the line following Thomas Hooks. I talked to one of the workers at the Georgia Achieves about this. She said at that time, you went in person to the tax office to pay your taxes. She speculated that Thomas and James had probably gone together to pay their taxes. Thomas is possible father to James.

Lee and Randolph County, Georgia History

In 1825, a portion of the territory ceded to the United States by the Treaty of Indian Springs, made in February 1825, between the United States and the Creek Indians, was made into Lee County. Three years later, in 1828, the County of Randolph was made from part of Lee County and had Lumpkin as its county seat.

Stewart County, Georgia History

On December 23, 1830, Stewart County was formed from a portion of the Randolph territory which included Districts 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, and portions of 31, 32 and 33. This included the city of Lumpkin which became the Stewart County seat. Later, portions of Stewart County went to form parts of Webster County, Quitman County, Marion County and Chattahoochee County. Stewart County was named for General Daniel Stewart, who was born October 20, 1759 in Saint Johns Parish, now Liberty County. General Stewart served in the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. He was the great-grandfather of President Theodore Roosevelt. He died in 1829. 1840 Census from Steward Co. Ga. Notes for JEMIMA ELIZABETH WILLIAMS: There is a Williams Family Cemetery near Yatesville on Triune Mill Rd. Pg 412, History of Upson Co. Ga. From Becki My grandmother gave me an oral history of her family, but she is 95 and she admitted that her memory was slipping. The information that she gave me is as follows: Her family's records were found in Upson County, Ga. Her mother was Jemina Elizabeth Hooks, m. 1896 to Willis Thomas Blackwell. She said that Jemina's father was J.T. Hooks, but could not remember the actual names and thought that she might possibly have it reversed. (T.J?) She said that J.T. was married to Epsie Caroline Shepherd. She also said that there was a Williams somewhere in the line, but she couldn't remember who. There are so many names that ring true... even though there are discrepancies. Does any of this fit with your information? HAZEL 13 Oct 1945, Atlanta Ga., . Notes for GEORGE BERRIEN HOOKS: George loved sports. As a young man he played baseball for the Grant Park Aces. A local Newspaper article written by Dave Jenkins reports: 'Fish Hooks, Grant Park Aces twirler, permitted no hits to the South Side Robins in seven innings to place himself among the honored sandlot hurlers. His team won 34 to 0. He fanned 12 and walked 4. With his team mates scoring 12 in the first inning, he was never in danger.' George enlisted in the Navy on February 17, 1941. He served as a signalman on the Ammunition ship USS Lassen. At the beginning of the war George had gone ashore to see the dentist in San Francisco. When he returned to the dock, the ship had left and no one could tell him where it was. When he rejoined the ship it sailed for the South Pacific. George recalls signaling the light cruiser Atlanta. Being from Atlanta, this was a big thrill for him. This would have been sometime between September 17 and November 13, 1942. George also went to North Africa and the Mediterranean. He was scheduled to go to Normandy also, but he became ill and was hospitalized in England. He was discharged from the Navy at the US Naval Hospital in Bethesda MD on November 24, 1944. He received his BA in Law on February 6, 1949 and practiced law until shortly before his death in October 1988.
