Highlights of the week included Cow Appreciation Day, a spaghetti dinner hosted by the Appleton Fox Cities Kiwanis Club, and an animal presentation by the Fox Valley Herp Club. The week's activities culminated with a viewing of "Remember the Titans" starring Denzel Washington, national spokesperson for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Mission Statement "Inspiring and enabling all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens."

CLUB NEWS

RECENT GRANTS (January 1 - April 30)

The Taco Bell Foundation awarded $10,000 to support the development of new teen programming. The grant will help the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley establish a new teen dance troupe, expand teen dance offerings during its weekly Thursday night teens-only activities, and introduce "Dance, Dance, Revolution" equipment and activities into the Club's teen center. Proceeds from Governor Jim Doyle's 2nd Inauguration benefited Boys & Girls Clubs throughout the state of Wisconsin. The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley received $18,000 to support ongoing programs and operations. The Community Foundation of the Fox Valley Region has awarded $5,500 in support of the Teen Dance program at the Locust Street location from its opportunity fund. The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley also received $3,075 from the Fox Valley Community Arts Fund. The Myra M. & Robert L. Vandehey Foundation, Ltd. has awarded $15,000 in support of the Summer Youth Development Program. More than 300 children from ages 6 18 are expected to attend each day. The program runs from June 12 and continues each weekday through August 25. Appleton made a gift in the amount of $10,000 to be used to support Club operations.

CENTER FOR GRIEVING CHILDREN OFFERS GOLF COUPON BOOK

If you love golf or know someone who does you may be interested in purchasing a Green Saver golf coupon book. The book is $20. Ten dollars from each book sold through the Club goes directly to the Center for Grieving Children. With coupons equaling more than $2,300 in savings plus five mystery coupons, one use can pay for the price of the book. Courses represented include: Winagamie Golf Club, Utica Golf Club, Westridge Golf Club, Reid Municipal, and many more. To order your book, call Pete Reinl at 920-831-9905. The Center for Grieving Children is a safe place where grieving children, teens and families in the Fox Valley area receive compassionate peer support, education, opportunities to remember and commemorate their loved one, and the chance to express their feelings in an accepting environment.

IT JUST TAKES ONE

With the demand for Club services continuing to expand, there's never been a more important time to contribute to the Club's annual fundraising appeal. This year, It Just Takes One...our 2007 Annual Campaign has a goal of raising $90,000 in personal gifts from our friends and supporters. One person can make a tremendous difference in the life of a child and have an equally significant impact on the future of our community. A gift of $200 can support a full year of Club involvement for a young person in need. A gift of $100 can purchase an entire month's worth of art supplies for our Arts program. A gift of $50 can fund 10 hours of tutoring and homework help support the kind of support that turn an "F" into a "B", turn failure into success. With your help we will be able to continue to provide a safe place, opportunities to learn and grow, and guidance and support to thousands of kids who need us most. To donate, visit our Web site at www.bgclubfoxvalley.org or call us at 731-0555.

KEVIN BARRY VISITS CLUB

Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Kevin Barry recently visited members of the Club as part of the Club's Triple Play initiative. This year, Triple Play will serve more than 1,200 in the Fox Cities. Its goals are to incorporate healthy living and active learning into every aspect of the Boys & Girls Club experience; to include programs that develop fitness, positive use of leisure time, and skills for stress management; and to develop and sustain positive relationships with others. After addressing the kids in the Club's auditorium, Kevin answered questions, signed autographs, and played pool.

IMAGEMAKERS PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST

We're joining a nationwide search to identify talented young artists. The competition is part of Boys & Girls Clubs of America's ImageMakers National Photography Contest. Sponsored by Circuit City Foundation, the contest is part of a comprehensive initiative encouraging artistic skills, cultural enrichment and creativity in the medium of photography. Thirteen members entered their images in our Club's contest and two have been selected to move on to the regional competition. Our winners were Olivia Smith, age 8, and Erick Vargas, age 11.

2007 YOUTH OF THE YEAR: DEVIN ROBERSON

When Devin Roberson had to leave the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley a couple of years ago due to family circumstances he never dreamed he would one day be named Youth of the Year. Devin, 14, was chosen from a group of seven finalists for this recognition. He is in the eighth grade at Madison Middle School and active member of the Keystone Club. When he was 11, Devin joined the Club because, he said, "I felt that I could just be a kid and hang out with my friends. There was no pressure to do anything besides respecting everyone and anything in the Club." One of the reasons Devin joined the Club was to find respite from problems at home. Unfortunately a couple of years into his membership, he had to leave and live with relatives outside the Fox Valley. Upon his return home, Devin resumed his Club membership. He says being away has given him a new perspective about the Club. "It's not just a place to hang with your friends or to have fun at, it's also a place to learn and grow so that in the future we will be able to make decisions for ourselves and think about what we are going to do with our lives," he says. Devin credits many of the staff members at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley for giving him support when he needed it. "They have helped me to get where I am today and for that I am grateful," he says. "They make me feel comfortable around adults. I feel respected when they talk to me. I can talk to them like I've known them forever." Devin enjoys sports, and plays "just about any sport that involves a ball." He says his favorite group activity is the Keystone Club (a teen leadership group) because one of the goals of the group is to make the Club a better place for everyone so that they feel like they're at home while at the Club. Participants in Youth of the Year were interviewed by Terry Bomier and Nancy Johnshoy, members of the Board of Directors and Greg LemkeRochon, Chief Professional Officer. Finalists were required to write a speech which was delivered to Club members, friends, and family. Devin went on to participate in the state Youth of the Year regional competition held in Madison. Other participants included Rachel Yanez (runner up), Tyler Layoff, Branden Driver, Dylan McCauley, Latoria Bishop, and Terral Wallace.

VINTAGE IN THE VALLEY

The fourth annual Vintage in the Valley wine and cheese event was held March 10 at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel. The event raised nearly $50,000 to support the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley and was co-title sponsored by Keller Inc. and Carew Concrete & Supply Co. Inc. The approximately 450 guests enjoyed a number of varieties of wine and beer donated by Flanagan's, General Beverage, von Stiehl winery, Wisconsin Distributors, General Beer and Stonecellar Brew Pup. Cheese was donated by Simon's, Union Star, Vern's Cheese, and Arla Foods. For the first time, the event was held on a Saturday evening and many commented that it was a great opportunity to gather groups of friends and neighbors. Wine connoisseurs could be found in abundance in the Cellar Select Room, sponsored by Ahern Fire Protection, where a wide variety of varieties and styles of wine were sampled. Three bottles of select wine were given away as door prizes to Cellar Select ticket holders. The prize wines, which ranged in value from $350 to $675, were sponsored by Appleton Cardiology Associates, Silton, Seifert, Carlson & Gamble, S.C., and Weidert Group. Special thanks to all of our supporters!
