Reasons for publishing in BioMed Central's journals

· Open Access Open Access · Research articles published in BioMed Central's journals are freely available online via BioMed Central's website, the National Institutes of Health's electronic depository of full text articles, PubMed Central, as well as many other major international archives. In many of our journals, most of the non-research content is also open access. ·

Starting a new independent open access journal with BioMed Central

BioMed Central enables groups of researchers to start new, open access journals, or convert existing journals to open access. In all these journals, the entire content becomes open access, not just the research. Editorial control remains with the researchers, whilst BioMed Central provides them with a complete publishing system free of charge. There are many reasons to start a new, open access journal. Some researchers want to provide a "home" for a new branch of their speciality; some feel that nuances within contemporary research are poorly served by existing journals; others feel there are not enough journals in their field. For some researchers, however, the reason is to provide an open access alternative to existing journals. Rapid publication

Open access is a sustainable model for the publication of biological and medical research

The traditional business model for scientific publishers relies on restricting access to published research, in order to recoup the costs of the publication process. This restriction of access to published research prevents full use being made of digital technologies, and is contrary to the interests of authors, funders and the scientific community as a whole. The traditional subscription-based model is also becoming increasingly unsustainable, as increasing amounts of research are being published whilst library budgets remain static. In contrast, BioMed Central's open access publishing model treats publication as the last phase of the research process. Article-processing charges (APCs) cover the cost of the publication process to allow free and immediate access to the research articles. APCs ensure transparency and allow publishers to compete to provide the best service at the best price. By coupling the cost of publication to research budgets, APCs ensure that the journal publishing system can scale to cope with an ever increasing volume of research. BioMed Central is committed to showing that open access provides a viable alternative that better fits the needs of the scientific community.

· All articles published in BioMed Central journals are included in PubMed and all major bibliographic databases so that your work can be found easily and cited by researchers and clinicians around the world. ·

Included in PubMed, Google and all major bibliographic databases

· This means that your article can be freely redistributed and reused by yourself and others as long as the article is correctly attributed. For example, you can post your article on your personal or institutional homepage and e-mail it to friends and colleagues. · No space constraints · Publishing online means unlimited space for figures, extensive data and video footage. · Tracking your manuscript pre- and post-publication · You can access private information about where your manuscript is in the peer-review process and, if published, see the number of times it is viewed or downloaded. ·

About open access

All research articles published in BioMed Central's journals are open access and in many of our journals, most of the non-research content is also open access. This means: 1. The article is universally and freely accessible via the Internet. 2. They are immediately deposited and permanently archived in PubMed Central, the free-access repository of peer-reviewed research in the life sciences run by the USA's National Institutes of Health, as well as other national archives. 3. The authors retain copyright of their articles and license the article under a Creative Commons license whereby they grant any third party the right to use the article freely as long as its integrity is maintained and its original authors, citation details and publisher are identified.
