02. Language Menu:

Here you can select the Language. (Tamil or Other Indian Languages are available as options.) Other Indian Languages option will work only in Elango Multilingual Bundles.

03. Keyboard Layout Menu:

Here you can select your favourite keyboard choice from among the available keyboard options available in the respective packs. (i) Elango Tamil 2000 Personal (Mini) Pack: Tamil '99 and Transliteration Keyboards. (ii) Elango Tamil 2000 Office (Normal) Pack Typewriter, Tamil '99 and Transliteration Keyboards. (iii) Elango Tamil 2000 Professional (Jumbo) Pack Elango Phonetic, Typewriter, Tamil '99 and Transliteration Keyboards. (iv) Elango Tamil e-Tutor Tamil '99 and Transliteration Keyboards. (v) Elango Tamil 2000 NT Pack - Elango Phonetic, Typewriter, Tamil '99 and Transliteration Keyboards. (vi) Elango Tamil 2000 2000 Server Pack - Elango Phonetic, Typewriter, Tamil '99 and Transliteration Keyboards. (vii) Elango Tamil 2000 MAC Pack - Elango Phonetic, Typewriter and Tamil `99 Keyboards.

04. Font Encoding Menu:

Here you can select either Monolingual (TAM) or Bilingual (TAB) encoding depending on the need. If you select TAM encoding, you have to use TAM fonts and if you select TAB encoding, you have to use TAB Fonts. TAM (Monolingual): In the Monolingual mode, you will get all the Tamil characters as separate characters. This is ideal for print and publishing and wherever aesthetics is very important. This has all Tamil characters as a single entity. So, there won't be any problem between the character and mathra. For example, ki is stored as a single character and not as ka and kokki (as in bilingual encoding). Hence there is no chance for the combined characters to break while line-break or hyphenation or while applying kerning which sometimes result in an unusual look. In TAM encoding, if you want to type English in between Tamil text, you need to change the font to English font in the respective application and switch OFF Scroll-Lock or Num-Lock key. TAB (Bilingual): In the Bilingual mode, you will get both English and Tamil characters in the same TAB font. In case you want to type °ð¢¹ê£ñ¤, you need not change the font for `K' & `°ð¢¹ê£ñ¤'. You can choose any of the TAB font, switch OFF Scroll-Lock (or Num-Lock), type English character (`K') and switch ON Scroll-Lock (or Num-Lock) that will allow you to type Tamil characters (°ð¢¹ê£ñ¤). During this operation, your Elango keyboard interface should be running behind the application. However, in the Bilingual mode, if you type ki, it will be stored as two characters i.e, ka and kokki. You won't get a single character ki. Sometimes this causes a problem when this character is in the end of the line (or) when you increase character space. The TAB-Bilingual mode is very useful for Mail & Internet communications. For print and publishing, it is advisable to use Monolingual (TAM) fonts.

05. Import/Export Menu:

Import Menu :

Export Menu :

Here you can convert the text file from one encoding to another encoding scheme using Import Menu e.g. an old version of Elango encoding to a new version of TAM or TAB encoding. Also reverse conversion of new encoding (TAM or TAB) to older encoding is possible using Export Menu. If you have old Tamil text typed in any of the old versions of Tamil software in any application like PageMaker, you can convert the old text to new format without the need to retype the whole text into the new package. The following options are available under IMPORT and EXPORT menus. IMPORT Elango 1 TAM Elango 2 TAM Elango 3 TAM Elango 2 - Elango 3 EXPORT TAM Elango 3 TAB - TSCII TAM - Vanavil TAB - CDAC Bi

Vanavil - TAM Kaniyan - TAB Indoword - TAM ShreeLipi - TAM CDAC Mo - TAM CDAC Bi - TAB MurasuAnjal TAB Roman - TAB TSCII - TAB TAM - TAB TAB - TAM

TAM - CDAC Mo TAB - MurasuAnjal TAB - Kanian TAM - Indoword TAM - ShreeLipi TAB - Roman TAB - WEB TAM - WEB TAB - TAM TAM - TAB

If you have a PageMaker file stored in any old encoding e.g. Elango3, select the text alone, make a copy, open the Notepad and paste it. Save the file in a text format. Here do not apply fonts. Your notepad window will be like this,

Go to the Import/ Export menu in Elango Tamil 2000. Choose Elango3 to TAM. Select your appropriate Text (. txt) File. You will get a new text file with an extension (.TM) in the same folder. Now in PageMaker, go to Place option in the File menu.

Select the (.TM) file and click OK. Sometimes the .TM files may not display in the above dialogue box. To make the .TM files to display, select 'All files' from "Files of type". Now you will see the .TM files. When you select the file and click OK the following dialogue box will appear.

In the above dialogue box select "Text only" option and click OK. The following dialogue box will appear.

In the above dialogue box select `Windows test file (ANSII)'. Don't select `DOS Text file format'. When you click OK, you will be getting the cursor loaded with text. Place the cursor into your page. After placing the text file, apply any one of the TAM Fonts. In case of English text in between in old Tamil text, remove English text before conversion. Otherwise English text also will get converted as unreadable Tamil encoding. Please note that re-formatting may be necessary after placing the converted text file in PageMaker. Roman encoding is the Tamil text files stored in English scripts in Transliterated form. This can be converted to TAB Tamil script using the "Roman - TAB" conversion option in Import menu. Similarly you can convert Tamil (TAB) script to English Transliteration form using the "TAB - Roman" conversion option in Export menu. You can also convert any old encoding e.g. CDAC Mono to another old encoding like SreeLipi by first Importing the text file using "CDAC Mo - TAM" and subsequently exporting the converted file (.TM ) using "TAM - ShreeLipi". Similar bi-directional conversions are also possible between TAM and TAB.

E. Tamil Keyboard Layouts

1.1 Tamil '99 Keyboard Layout

1.2 Tamil '99 Extended Keyboard Layout

1.3 Tamil '99 KeyBoard Methodology

This layout is an International Standard for Tamil Keyboard Layout approved by the Tamil Nadu Government (G.O. No. 17). This is working on sound-based combination. 1. The keyboard has the twelve vowels Ü, Ý, Þ, ß, à, á, â, ã, ä, å, æ, å÷ and aaytham ç, the eighteen pure Tamil consonants (combined with the first vowel Ü), the five grandha consonants ú, û, ü, ý, þ and the letter ÿ. Also additional Tamil symbols like ðø¢Á, õó¾, âí¢, Ïð£ò¢, «ñø¢ð®, «îî¤, ñ£îñ¢, õ¼ìñ¢, è£ô¢, ܬó, ºè¢è£ô¢ are provided in the Tamil '99 Keyboard. These symbols are widely used in Tamil Calendars, Panchangams, Tamil accounting, etc. These symbols are available only in TAM-monolingual fonts. Personal(Mini) Pack doesn't support TAM fonts and hence Mini Pack user will not be able to use these symbols. only However Office(Normal) and Professional(Jumbo) Pack users will be able to use these symbols while using the TAM font encoding.

2. The pulli, which symbolizes a pure consonant, is provided as a separate key (lower case f). The following combination will work with all the 18 consonants and 5 grandha consonants. è + (¹÷¢÷¤) = è¢ (or) è + ¢ = è¢ ú + ¢= ú¢ 3. A consonant symbol followed by a vowel produces a vowelised consonant. ñ + Ý = ñ£ î + Þ = î¤ ð+à=¹ û + à = û§ õ + â = ªõ ó + ä = ¬ó í + å = ªí£ ô + å÷ = ªô÷ ï + Ý = ï£ ò + ß = ò¦ ê+ á=Å ú + á = ú¨ ü + ã = «ü û + ä = ¬û ö + æ = «ö£ þ + å÷ = ªþ÷

4. A consonant symbol followed by the same consonant symbol automatically puts pulli for the first consonant symbol. This is to save typing time of the operator. è + è = è¢è If you want to type Üð¢ð£, just type Ü + ð + ð + Ý (4 key strokes) instead of typing Ü + ð + ¢+ ð + Ý (5 key strokes). 5. Similarly, when the same consonant symbol is typed three times continuously one after another, then the first consonant symbol alone gets the pulli automatically, and the second consonant symbol does not get a pulli, since when the third consonant symbol is typed the automatic pulli feature is temporarily disabled. This feature will be restored immediately after that. è + è + è = è¢èè è + è + è + è = è¢èè¢è If you want to type the word ê¤è¢è£«è£, just type ê+Þ+è+è+Ý+è+æ Similarly for Üð¢ðð¢ð£, type Ü+ð+ð+ð+ð+Ý 6. When the first vowel Ü is typed after a consonant symbol, this disables temporarily the combining of any stroke with the previous stroke. Hence typing any vowel will not join with the previous consonant symbol. Similarly the auto pulli feature will also be disabled for the next stroke alone. This auto pulli

feature gets restored immediately after the next stroke. The vowel Ü works as the delinking symbol. è + Ü + Þ = èÞ è + Ü + è = èè è + Ü + è + è = èè¢è ( not ( not ( not è¢èè ) è¤ ) è¢è )

7. The same auto pulli feature is provided when a soft consonant symbol is followed by the corresponding hard consonant symbol. The soft and hard consonants pairs are (é, è), (ë, ê), (ï, î), (í, ì), (ñ, ð), (ù, ø). é + è = é¢è -- To get êé¢èñ¢ just type ê+é+è+ñ+ ¢ ë + ê = ë¢ê -- To get ñë¢ê÷¢ just type ñ+ë+ê+÷+ ¢ ï + î = ï¢î -- To get Þï¢îï£÷¢ just type Þ+ï+î+ï+£+÷+ ¢ í + ì = í¢ì -- To get ñí¢ìðñ¢ just type ñ+í+ì+ð+ñ+ ¢ ñ + ð = ñ¢ð -- To get ê¤îñ¢ðóñ¢ just type ê+Þ+î+ñ+ð+ó+ñ+ ¢ ù + ø = ù¢ø -- To get ñù¢øñ¢ just type ñ+ù+ø+ñ+ ¢ 8. The glyphs like kombu, kokki, etc., which work as a vowel modifiers, can be got by typing the caret (^) sign first and then the corresponding vowel. When you want to bring the following glyphs ¤ , ¦, §, ¨, ª, «, ¬ which are made available in the Tamil '99 Extended Keyboard, first press ^ (shift+6) and then the appropriate mathras. Please refer to the Tamil '99 Extended Keyboard Layout (with ^ Combination) in the User Manual for the respective key stokes. To view the Tamil `99 Extended Keyboard, select `Options' menu and choose `Onscreen Keyboard Map' and click on `Tamil `99 (with ^ Combination)'. Press ( ^ + f ) you will get Similarly, ^ + s ^ + w ^ + d ^ + g ^ + t ^ + r ^+c ^+. = = = ¦ = § ¨ = ª = « = = · ¬ © ¤ ¢(¹÷¢÷¤) mathra alone

^ + e =

^+2 = ^+3 = z ^+4 =

^+7 = ` ^+8 = ' ^+9 = ^+0 = " "

Out of these six dead keys, the pulli ( ¢) and the two kokkis ( ¤ ¦) are available in the TAM and TAB font coding as separate symbols. So, they can be got by typing these dead keys followed by one space, as done in the manual typewriter. 2. The pulli followed by the following 18 consonant symbols and 5 grandha characters will produce pure consonants. E.g. ¢ + è = è¢ ¢ + ô = ô¢ ¢ + ù = ù¢ ¢ + ñ = ñ¢ ¢ + ú = ú¢ ¢ + ü = ü¢

3. The sign ' ¤ ' followed by the following 17 consonant symbols (except ®) and 5 grandha characters will produce kuril Þ consonants.

E.g.

¤ + é = é¤ ¤ + ÷ = ÷¤ ¤ + ó = ó¤

¤ + ö = ö¤ ¤ + ý = ý¤ ¤ + î = î¤

4. The sign ' ¦ ' followed by the following 17 consonant symbols (except ¯) and 5 grandha characters will produce nedil ß consonants. E.g. ¦+ ê = ê¦ ¦+ ð = 𦠦+ ò = ò¦ ¦+ û = û¦ ¦+ õ = õ¦ ¦+ ô = ô¦

5. The sign ' A ' followed by the following 4 consonant symbols only will produce kuril à consonants. E.g. A+ð=¹ A+õ=¾ A +ò=» A +é=±

9. The following 5 grandha consonants followed by the sign § , produce kuril à consonants. E.g. ú + § = ú§ ü + § = ü§ þ + § = þ§ û + § = û§ ý + § = ý§

10. The following 5 grandha consonants followed by the sign ¨ , produce nedil á consonants.

E.g.

ú + ¨ = ú¨ ü + ¨ = ü¨ þ + ¨ = þ¨

û + ¨ = û¨ ý + ¨ = ý¨

11. The following 8 characters can be got by typing either as full characters or as combination characters as in typewriter. E.g. Shift + Z = û Shift + B = þ ¤ + û = û¤ ¤ + þ = þ¤ ¦ + û = û¦ ¦ + þ = þ¦ ¢+ û = û¢ ¢+ þ = þ¢ (or) (or) (or) (or) (or) (or) (or) (or) à +E =û Ã+E =û à + ¤ + E = û¤ Ã + ¤ + E = þ¤ à + ¦ + E = û¦ Ã + ¦ + E = þ¦ à + ¢+ E = û¢ Ã + ¢+ E = þ¢

12. The following 3 characters can be got by typing as full characters only. (The position `Q' (i.e.) the position of second half of µ is left blank) E.g. ] = ý q=µ

13. The two characters ³ and Æ, which are not available in the manual typewriter, can be got as follows E.g. A+ë=³ B+ë=Æ

II (B). Keyboard Sequences for Enhanced Typewriter KeyBoard Layout: 1. The conventional layout lacks many of the symbols available in the computer keyboard. Also the Tamil symbols, now available with the Tamil '99 keyboard are also not available. In order to make these symbols also available for the conventional typist, in an easy way, it is proposed in the Enhanced Typewriter Keyboard Layout to make the A (upper case A) as the escape key. This key is vacant in the Typewriter keyboard. Once this key A is pressed, all the symbols in the computer keyboard become available in the same positions as shown on a computer keyboard. The layout of all these keys are shown in Enhanced Typewriter Keyboard Layout (with `A' Combination). 2. Note that this escape key is only for the symbols, and not for the numerals and the English letters. If any key other than those mentioned here is pressed, the effect of the escape key will be nullified, and the latest pressed key only will be activated. 3. The three numeral positions 2, 3 and 4 are shown in this layout. They correspond to the symbols of half, three quarter and quarter. This is easy to remember. These symbols are not available in the TAM and TAB coding schemes. For this, the positions 141 (half), 157 (three fourth) , and 158 (quarter) are reserved.

4. The Tamil symbols ðø¢Á , õó¾ , âí¢ , Ïð£ò, «ñø¢ð® , «îî¤ , ñ£îñ¢ , õ¼ìñ¢ have also been provided, in the same places as in the Tamil `99 layout. Note that these symbols are available in the TAM code only and not in TAB. 5. The copyright symbol can be obtained by typing c after the escape letter A. The bullet sign can be got by typing the full stop after the escape sequence A. Note that among the symbols, only the full stop will not be available as such, after the escape symbol. 6. The non-breaking space (160) ... is available in the upper case N position.

è£----è¤ ----è¦ ----° ----Ã----ªè ---«è ---¬è ---ªè£---«è£ --ªè÷ --4.

kA or kaa ki kI or kii ku kU or kuu ke kE or kee kai ko kO or koo kau

The below 5 Grandha charactors and the letter sri can be typed like this,

ú¢ ----û¢ ----ü¢ ----ý¢ ---þ¢ ---ÿ -----

S sh j h x sr or sri

5. The below 8 Tamil Symbol characters can be typed like this, (These symbols are available only in Mono-lingual Encoding i.e., only in TAM font)

ï£÷¢ --- ^ + Z ñ£îñ¢ -- ^ + X

õ¼ìñ¢ - ^ + C ðø¢Á --- ^ + V õó¾ --- ^ + B Ïð£ò¢ -- ^ + A ªïñ¢ðó¢ -- ^ + S «ñó¢ð®__^ + D è£ô¢_ _ _ ^ + 4 ܬó_ _ _ ^ + 2 ºè¢è£ô¢_ _^ + 3

6. The character 'r' ( ó¢) never appears after 'n' ( ù¢ ). So if a 'r' character appears after 'n', it must be a 'R' ( ø¢ ). This 'intelligence' has been fed into the keyboard driver. The following words can be typed like this,

ñù¢øñ¢ ïù¢ø¤ -èù¢Á --

manRam or mandram n-anRi or wandri kanRu or kandru

7. The same applies for 'tr'. Small 'r' ( ó¢) never follow a big 'R' ( ø¢) and small 'r' never gets repeated ( ó¢ó - not common ). So if two 'r's are appearing next to each other, it must be RR ( ø¢ø). ie, tr - ø¢ø¢

«ð£ø¢ø¤ ï£ø¢øñ¢ «î£ø¢øñ¢

pootri n-aatram thootram

8. When 'n' is typed immediately after a space, carriage return or tab, you will automatically get 'n-' ( ï¢). Also if a 'th' follows 'n', the 'n' will be switched to 'n-'. The following line will render the 'n's correctly when typed in Tamil mode. ie, nt - ï¢î¢

Þõù¢ ïì õï¢î£ù¢

9.

ivan nadanthu vanthaan

When 'd' after an 'n' will switch the preceding 'n' to 'N' ie, nd - í¢ì¢, ndr - ù¢ø¢

èí¢«ìù¢ kandeen ñí¢ìðñ¢ mandapam

ïí¢´ --

nandu

10. njc can also be typed as njj ie, njc = njj¢
