Read Berg, Brook text version

Berg, Brook. When Marion Copied. Wisconsin: UpstartBooks, 2006. Unpaged. (ISBN: 1932146555) This book and accompanying lesson plans attack the very important issue of plagiarism. While the concept is a worthwhile one, this format seems to miss the mark. The story is about a group of animal friends who do a report on the Revolutionary War. Their teacher begins his class by reading three reports that were handed in for a recent assignment. All three were exactly the same, except the third mentions from where the information came. The discussion of plagiarism takes place next. While the included lesson plan does break down the skills for different grade levels, the interest level of this picture book is 1st or 2nd grade. Even though the format is geared toward the young elementary students, the text in the book is written for 4th grade and up. Berg would have been better to use Marion to teach the importance of knowing what information is needed and where to find that information to give credit to her source instead of putting the focus on the word "plagiarism." Making the report about a topic that younger elementary school students can relate to instead of the Revolutionary War would also help with the mismatch of interest level and content. The most valuable pieces of information are the included lesson plans. The plans could stand on their own as a good way to teach citation at all levels. Brook Berg is a Library Media Specialist in Minnesota who interestingly enough had a pet hedgehog named Marion. This is the third Marion book written. The others are What Happened to Marion's Book? and What Marion Taught Willis. Jamie Gotlieb Youth Librarian Douglas County Libraries
