February Program

Sally King I' bet I' not the only one who feels like I' ll m m caught up in that old movie "Groundhog Day" where things are repeated over and over until you get them right! Because the snow canceled January's meeting, we will push all scheduled programs back one month. We will be covering raw edge landscape applique in February so come ready for fun. If you have a raw edge applique piece, bring it along for show and tell. We would also love to see books or patterns you have found helpful for this technique.

President's Prattle

Diane Miller Well, since we had a snow day for our January meeting, let's try it again. Push rewind and we will do January in February. Don't forget to bring any handmade quilt-type Christmas cards for show & tell. Our new UFO Challenge will require that you bring your OLD UFO for show & tell so we can see the before and after progress. You will receive points for each OLD UFO that you complete. To make my personal commitment more binding, I will put $5.00 in the guild kitty if I fail to complete my project by the end of 2011. So dig deep and find that UFO for show & tell! Check your calendars and be ready to sign up for a carpool to the February 19th One Stop Shop Hop in Lancaster, SC.

A number will be drawn and if you are the winner, you will receive 50% of the money collected. Think of all the quilting fabric and notions you could buy!! The rest of the money will go into our treasury to help fund our many philanthropic projects. For example, we will need batting, backing and notions to complete our current project of small quilts for local charities, etc. So come prepared with a few dollars at each meeting to purchase your tickets. How Much Fabric Should I Buy?

2011 Feb 19 5th Annual One Stop Shop Hop 476 Hubbard Dr. Lancaster, SC Quiltfest of Pigeon Forge, TN Preserves the timeless art of quilting.

2011 Quilt Extravaganza Swan Lake Quilt Guild Sat. 10-4, Sun. 1-4 Patriot Hall, 135 Haynsworth St. Sumter SC. $5 admission.

Here is a rule of thumb: * If you love a fabric and expect to use it in a border or major part of a quilt, buy at least 3 1/2 to 4 yards. * If you expect to use it as one of the major fabrics in a quilt, buy 2 to 3 yards. * If you expect to use it in string quilting, strip piecing or other small areas, buy 1/2 yard. * If you have no idea whatsoever what to do with it but love anyway, buy 1 yard.

Mystery Quilt!

Saturday, February 26th - 10 to 5 - $45

Susan Congdon, assisted by Billie Sprawls, will lead a group of 20 students in the construction of a Mystery Quilt! We have rented a triple-size classroom at the Center for the Arts on Laurens Street for this group class. When you register for the class (register at the Aiken Quilt Shoppe), you will receive the fabric requirements, and instructions for cutting your fabrics prior to class. During the class, Susan and Billie will provide step-by-step instructions for the construction to complete the mysterious pieced top. This should be a fun class, with prizes and drawings throughout the day. Lunch will be provided to students. At the end of the day, we can all "ooohhhh" and "aaahhhh" as we compare the distinctive designs made by students using the same pattern but different fabrics.
