Undercarriage Propel Systems

Cat® Undercarriage propel systems provide the hydraulic power and electronics for superior track motion control! These solutions are engineered for optimum performance when integrated with the undercarriage model selected. The propel systems are available in either open or closed circuit configurations, depending on how you utilize your machine.

Open Circuit vs Closed Circuit Systems

If your application requires your machine to travel less than 10% of the total working time and remain stationary for longer periods, such as drilling, shredding or crushing, an open circuit propel system is recommended. The open circuit propel system utilizes a closed center valve to control and divert flow from load-sensing pumps so it may be used for other functions, allowing for maximum utilization of the machine's installed hydraulics. However, if your application requires your machine to perform its work by moving about frequently, such as dozing or moving materials from one location to another, a closed circuit propel system is recommended. The closed circuit propel system utilizes an over-center pump for each propel motor, to provide the dedicated flow required to propel the machine for a high percentage of its duty cycle.

Sizing The System

Required Tractive Effort (lbs)

Gradeability: A measure of the slope that a machine can climb assuming you are not slip limited and the selected undercarriage has sufficient tractive effort. Find the Gross Machine Weight of the machine on the x-axis. Draw a vertical line from the Gross Machine Weight on the x-axis to the curve that represents the required gradeability. Draw a horizontal line from the point where the vertical line intersects the gradeability curve over to the y-axis. The value that the horizontal line intersects on the y-axis is the required tractive effort.

Tractive Effort: A measure of the maximum force that a machine can exert assuming you are not slip limited. Find the machine's desired speed on the x-axis. Draw a vertical line from the required speed on the x-axis up to the curve that represents the tractive effort value found above (Interpolation may be required). Draw a horizontal line from the point where the vertical line intersects the tractive effort curve over to the y-axis. The value that the horizontal line intersects on the y-axis is the required engine horsepower for travel.

Performance -- When you select a Caterpillar control system, the software can be optimized (tuned) by the OEM to meet the machine's specific requirements. If your machine is equipped with a Cat engine, the engine performance information can be utilized to optimize power management and emissions, thereby increasing the machine's efficiency. Control -- Caterpillar can meet your control needs by offering electronic controls with an optional radio remote. When a controls package is selected, you will receive added peace of mind with the included Un-Commanded Motion Detection (UCMD) system. The UCMD system monitors and restricts movement of the machine that the operator has not commanded. Flexibility -- Caterpillar propel systems are scalable to match the breadth of your product line which will reduce service complexity across a family of machines.
