Checklist of the Birds of the Chaparrí Ecolodge, Chaparrí Private Conservation Area, Tinajones Reservoir and the community lands of Santa Catalina de Chongoyape

Compiled by: Rob Williams. Updated: 30 July 2007 Introduction This Checklist includes birds found in the Chaparri Private Conservation Area, including the Chaparri Ecolodge, the adjacent land of the community of Santa Catalina de Chongoyape, and the adjacent Tinajones reservoir. The list is largely the result of observations by the author but also includes records by other observers. The list has been compiled during the last 8 years since 30 October 1999. The list currently has 214 species. The Chaparri Private Conservation Area is a private community-owned and managed protected area that encompasses some 38,412 hectares, covering an altitudinal range from 150 m to 1350 m, which contain a range of habitats including semi-desert, sparse dry forest, lowland Prosopisdominated forest and foothill dry forest. Many areas of the reserve have been previously degraded by intensive grazing and uncontrolled timber extraction but under protection the natural vegetation is now recovering. At 214 the total number of species is high for a single locality in the Peruvian dry forest, but it should be born in mind that the list covers an area of nearly 40,000 hectares, with over 1000 m altitudinal range, and also includes a 2,000 hectare freshwater reservoir which attracts many species not normally found in such areas. Indeed, some 40 species have been recorded only at Tinajones Reservoir, while eleven more are principally recorded there but have also been recorded in other areas, but possibly only do so due to the presence of the reservoir nearby. This leaves a total of 163 species that are not mainly associated with the reservoir that occur in the reserve, agricultural and built up areas of the community. The abundance of each species has been categorized as follows: Common (C) = Will likely be seen daily and in good numbers in appropriate habitat. Fairly Common (FC) = Likely to be seen daily in small numbers in appropriate habitat. Uncommon (U) = Generally a scarce or very local resident or a scarce but regular visitor. Rare (R) = A rare resident species represented by only a few individuals or a few records of transients. Unlikely to be seen on a brief visit. Vagrant (V) = One or two records of wandering individuals recorded. Local species are indicated by L prefixing their abundance code (e.g. LC = Locally Common). Migratory species are indicated by (M) following their abundance code. 43 endemics to the Tumbesian Endemic Bird Area are indicated by a "T" in the endemic column. Species that occur at Tinajones Reservoir only are marked with a "" and species that mainly occur there but that have also been seen in other areas are marked with a "" in the Tinajones column Globally threatened species are named in bold type with code for the IUCN threat categories being given in parentheses following the English Name. The area supports one Critically Threatened (CR), one Endangered (EN), three Vulnerable (VU), and five Near-threatened (NT) species. Observers of rare or vagrant species of particular note are indicated by their initials in parentheses after the Scientific Name. The initials are listed after the observers in the list of acknowledgements. Please send any new or noteworthy sightings to Rob Williams at [email protected]

Notes 1. A confirmed record but it is considered possible that the bird may have been transported to Tinajones by people after having been captured at the coast. The bird was well seen by resevior engineers and was present for about a week before it disappeared. 2. A confirmed record but it is considered possible that the bird may have been transported to Tinajones by people after having been captured at the coast. The bird was apparently in poor condition and not seen to fly. 3. Reported based on a bird heard calling. Confirmation required. * The subspecies cassini of Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus is resident in the region, whilst migrants that are resident in the area during the northern winter are believed to represent the subspecies tundrius and anatum. There are also two reports of Black-necked Woodpecker Colaptes atricollis in Chaparri, however given that the local subspecies of Golden-olive Woodpecker has a black throat, the species is currently considered unconfirmed until a sufficiently well documented report is received. Acknowledgements We are grateful to the following people contributed observations of birds to this list: Fernando Angulo (FA), Tim Appleton (TA), Javier Barrios (JB), Ysbrand Brouwers (YB), Des Callaghan (DC), James Conder (JC), Martin Davies (MD), Gunnar Engblom (GE), Lars Jonsson (LJ), Mitch Lysinger (ML), Tino Mischler (TM), Xavier Munoz (XM), Lelis Navarette (LN), Bruce Pearson (BP), Heinz Plenge (HP), Robert Ridgely (RR), Noam Shany (NS), Tomas Salazar (TS), Ivan Vallejos (IV), Javier Vallejos (JV), Thomas Valqui (TV), Richard Webb (RW), James Williams (JW), Rob Williams (RSRW), Darren Woodhead (DW).
