Installation Note for 900ul Injection Upgrade Kit (G1363A) for 1100 Series Autosamplers

1. In this note we describe how to install the 900ul injection upgrade kit into a 1100 Series autosampler. General Information The injection upgrade kit can be installed in any 1100 Series autosampler. Due to the higher load on the drive mechanism, the maximum system pressure is limited to 200 bar (2950 psi). When using the 900ul analytical head, the syringe ejects up to 900ul into waste. Therefore it is recommended to install a separate waste tube (shipped with the start-up kit of your autosampler) to the waste outlet of the autosampler. NOTE: Do not connect a waste outlet directly to the plastic waste tube (connected to port 4 of the injection valve). This can lead to siphoning effects, as that will influence the precision of the autosampler. Installing the 900ul Upgrade Kit The installation of the upgrade kit is divided into three parts: exchanging the analytical head with the 900ul injection volume and extending the loop capillary to comply with the new injection volume, exchanging the needle and configuring the system. Before beginning this procedure, go to the Change Piston Mode. If you have ChemStation software, select the View menu, and Diagnosis. Select Maintenance, ALS Maintenance Positions and Change Piston/Start If you have the Control Module, select System, Tests, Autosampler, Change Seal, and Start. Part 1: Exchanging the Analytical Head 1. Remove the two capillaries from the analytical head assembly. 2. Remove the two fixing bolts, and pull the analytical head assembly away from the autosampler. 3. Install the 900ul analytical head assembly in the autosampler (reuse screws from original assembly). Make sure the large hole in the analytical head is facing downwards. 4. Connect the loop etension to the upper side of the analytical head and connecct the union to the loop extension. 5. Connect the loop capillary (connected to the needle) to the union of the loop extension and reinstall the bottom capillary (connected to port 2 of the injection valve) to the analytical head. 6. Connect the waste tube (shipped with the start up kit of your autosampler) to the waste outlet. 7. Install the front cover. 8. Select End/Done in the ChemStation or on the Control Module.

Part 2: Exchanging the Needle Assembly WARNING: To avoid personal injury, keep fingers away from the needle area during autosampler operation. DO not bend the safety flap away from its position or attempt to insert or remove a vial from the gripper when the gripper is positioned below the needle. Before beginning this procedure: go to the Change Needle Mode. If you have ChemStation software, select the View menu, and Diagnosis. Select Maintenance, ALS Maintenance Positions and Change Needle/Start. If you have the Control Modules, select System, Tests, Autosampler, Change Needle and Start. The needle will be positioned 15 mm above the needle seat. When the needle has reached its change position, remove the front cover. 1. Select the Needle Down/Down Arrow selection until the needle is aligned with the hole in the safety cover. 2. Remove the sample loop fitting from the needle fitting. 3. Loosen the fixing screw and lift out the needle. 4. Select Needle Down/Down Arrow. Repeat the selection until the needle arm has reached its lowest position. 5. Insert the slitted needle from the upgrade kit. Align the needle in the seat and push it down, then tighten the screw firmly. 6. Reconnect the sample loop fitting to the needle fitting. 7. Use the Needle Up/Down Arrow to lift the needle to a position about 2mm above the seat. 8. Ensure the needle is aligned with the seat. If required, bend the needle slightly until the needle is aligned correctly. 9. Install the front cover. 10. Select End/Done in the ChemStation or on the Control Module.

Part 3: Configuration of the System Agilent ChemStation Software Configuration 1. If not already displayed, pull down the View menu and select Method & Run Control. 2. Pull down the Instrument menu and select More Injector and Configuration. 3. Change the Syringe volume to 900ul and press OK. 4. Select Instrument, Set up Pump. Change the maximum pressure limit to 200 bar. Control Module Configuration 1. Press System, Configure, Autosampler from the Analysis level. 2. Select 900ul from the Syringe Volume pull down menu and press Done. 3. Press Settings and select the Agilent 1100 Pump from the pull down menu. 4. Press Pressure and change the upper pressure limit to 200 bar and press Done. NOTE: If the autosampler is not connected to a 1100 Series pump, make sure that the pressure limit of your pump is set to 200 bar.
