A fire deliberately set at an apartment building in the 3900 block of W. Argyle claimed the lives of a mother, her unborn child and a seven-year-old daughter. Detectives conducted a diligent investigation that included fanning through numerous pieces of surveillance camera footage from nearby gas stations and developing information that gang members, residing in the apartment complex, were in an ongoing dispute with rival gang members. Detectives reached out to the public by passing out flyers requesting assistance from the public that led to interviews of potential witnesses. Their tireless efforts proved successful after they located a witness who helped identify the offender. -MORE312-745-6110 · 3510 South Michigan Ave., Chicago, IL 60653 · Fax 312-745-6999

Officers responded to a call of a Person with a Gun when they smelled a pungent odor of marijuana emanating from a local business. The officers began conducting surveillance of this local establishment and noticed several individuals picking up clear plastics bags filled with cannabis. The offenders attempted to evade arrest after the officers identified themselves, but the officers successfully arrested four offenders and recovered more than four-thousand grams of cannabis, over eleven-thousand dollars in cash and a .380 caliber handgun. The keen efforts of these officers helped capture a convicted felon and drug dealer and reclaim a safer environment for community members. A Department Commendation was presented to: Lt. John R. McMurray, Sgt. Kenneth A. Bigg, Det. Daniel J. O'Connor, Det. Wade J. Golab, Det. Raul Alvarez, Det. Joseph P. McGuire, P.O. John D. Gregoire, P.O. Enyinnaya O. Nwagwu, P.O. Shaneice Neighbors, P.O. William C. Murphy, P.O. Richard J. Hanrahan, P.O. Cory D. Junious, P.O. James P. Desmond, P.O. Jaime Casillas, Metra Police Chief James Sanford, Metra Police Commander Thomas Dorsey, Metra Police Captain Robert Clanin, and Metra Police Det. Terrence Reilly. During the summer of 2009, more than a dozen armed robberies occurred at two separate Metra train platforms on the South Side. A victim was shot during one of the robberies. Detectives searched several surveillance videos that helped them obtain photos of two offenders. Armed with these photos, detectives showed the photos to community members near the platforms and reached out to the media in an effort to help identify the two offenders. The efforts of the detectives, officers and media paid off when police learned the names of the offenders and ultimately placed them in custody. These arrests led to the identity and arrests of two additional offenders. The intensive investigative efforts of the detectives and officers helped end an armed robbery pattern and remove four dangerous offenders from the community.
