Belden Unshielded MASS-TER cable offers users the construction advantages of both round and flat cable under one jacket. Designed to meet the assembly requirement needs of today's computers, computer peripherals, terminals, telecommunications systems, industrial control systems, and military communication systems. Unshielded MASS-TER combines the termination ease of Belden's popular Vari-Twist flat cable with flexibility and air flow enhancements of round cable. Tinned copper (.050 conductor spacing). MASS-TER is PVC jacketed in a round construction of preinsulated twisted pairs followed by a flat terminating section laminated to a clear PVC/ polyester substrate. Standard twist length is 18 inches followed by a 2-inch flat section. Because the conductor pairs are non-laminated, it is easier to fit MASS-TER around corners. Each adjacent pair is twisted in an opposite direction to reduce crosstalk. The Vari-Twist flat section of MASS-TER makes it easy to terminate from either the top or bottom of the cable. Belden MAS-TER will terminate to any standard IDC connector, resulting in bottomline cost savings. THE ADVANTAGES OF FIBER OPTIC COMMUNICATIONS OVER METALLIC SYSTEMS

Optical fibers emit no radiation, in computer applications. which ideally suits them for tougher standards

Because optical signals do not require grounding connections, The transmitter and receiver are electrically isolated and free of ground loop problems. Safe in hazardous or flammable environments. No chance of terminal-to-terminal ground potential shifts. Safe from sparking and shock. In digital computing, telephone, and video broadcast systems, the high signal bandwidth of fibers means increased channel repeaters. Extremely low attenuation rates result in longer cable runs and fewer repeaters. A single conductor fiber optic cable weighs about 9 lbs. per 1,000 ft. compared to coaxial cable which weighs about 80 lbs. per 1,000 ft. (about 9 times more). This lighter weight and smaller diameter duct space. means easier installation requiring less

Fiber optic systems are immune to electronic "bugging", because they must be physical tapped to extract data. Before fiber optics, Telephone companies used two pairs of copper wire to carry 24 two way conversations. Now, 1344 two way voice transmissions can be easily handled on one pair of fiber optic cable.

Step index multimode fiber derives its name from the sharp step like difference in the refractive or reflective index of the core and the cladding. Common step index fibers have core diameters of 100, 200, and 300 microns. For short distance applications, 3,000 ft. or less and low data-rate applications, a step index multimode fiber is a cost effective and efficient answer to data transmission. In graded index multimode fiber the lightwave rays are also guided down the fiber in multiple pathways. But unlike step index fiber, a graded index core contains many layers of glass, each with a lower index of refraction as you go outward from the axis. The effect of this grading is that lightwave rays are speeded up in the outer layers, to match those rays going the shorter pathway directly down the axis. The result is that a graded index fiber equalizes the propagation times of the various modes so that data can be sent over a much longer distance and at higher rates before light pulses start to overlap and become less distinguishable at the receiver end. Graded index fibers are commercially available with core diameters of 50, 62.5, 85 and 100 microns. THE BELDEN FIBER OPTIC CABLES LISTED ON THE FOLLOWING PAGE ARE ALL GRADED INDEX MULTIMODE GLASS CONSTRUCTION. The single mode fiber allows only a single lightwave ray or mode to be transmitted down the core. This virtually eliminates any distortion due to the light pulses overlapping . The core of a single mode or monomode fiber is extremely small, approximately five or six microns. The monomode fiber has higher capacity and capability than either of the two multimode types. For example, monomode fiber can handle a 16 channel video system for 15 miles without a repeater.

CABLE STRUCTURE Loose Buffer Currently two general cable constructions are employed to contain the optical fibers. The first is a loose buffer tube construction where the fiber is contained in a gelfilled plastic tube that has an inner diameter considerable larger than the fiber. This provides a high level of isolation for the fiber from exterior mechanical forces present on the cable. For multifiber cables, a number of these tubes (each containing a single fiber) are combined with the necessary longitudinal strength members. Note: For multifiber (4 through 18 fibers) and "multipurpose" loose tube cables, a breakout kit or assembly is required for attaching single fiber connections.

Core This is the boundary zone of the fiber. Its function is to provide a different refractive index at the core interface in order to cause reflection within the core so that the lightwaves are transmitted down the fiber. Coating Coatings are usually multi-layers of plastic applied to absorb shock and provide extra fiber protection. These buffer coatings are available from 250 microns to 1000 microns. The buffer coatings on optical fibers are commercially available in either mechanically strippable or chemically strippable form. Fiber Size The size of an optical fiber is commonly referred to be the outer diameter of its core and cladding. Example: 50/125 indicates a fiber with a core of 50 microns, and cladding of 125 microns. Coating is typically not referred to since it is not involved in the actual transmission of light, and is usually removed when joining or connecting fibers. A MICRON (uM) IS EQUAL TO ONE MILLIONTH OF A METER. 25 MICRONS ARE EQUAL TO 1/1000 OF AN INCH. A SHEET OF PAPER IS APPROXIMATELY 25 MICRONS THICK. Fiber Types Fiber can be identified by the type of paths that the lightwave rays, or modes, travel within the fiber core. There are two types of multiple pathway fibers, or multimode fibers, step index and graded index, and one category of single mode fiber (seeFig. #2).

Tight Buffer The second cable construction is a tight buffer design, such as that used in Belden BitLite products. In this cable a thicker buffer coating is placed directly on the fiber which is concentrically surrounded by a Kevlar layer for added strength and protection. An outer jacket then completes the structure. The result is a lightweight and highly flexible fiber optic cable. Breakout Style Breakout cable is a refined form of tight buffer construction. In breakout cable, a tightly buffered fiber is surrounded by Kevlar and a jacket, typically PVC. These single-fiber subunit elements are then covered by a common sheath to form the breakout cable. This "cable within a cable" offers the advantages of direct, simplified connector attachment, and installation.
