2.0 Introduction

ThisinstallationmanualdetailsthepreferredprocedurefortheinstallationofClipsalPower Filters970MF10and970MF20. TheseproductsaredesignedtobeinstalledwiththeClipsal970SeriesSurgeDiverters;to provideadditionalprotectionandfiltering.Forconvenience,theprovisionoftwosetsofeach terminalontheMPFallowsinputandoutputwiringtobeconfigured,atwill,toeithertopor bottomterminals.Onlyoneofeachoftheterminalsisrequiredtobeconnected. Theseunitsarepackagedin"DIN43880"profileenclosures,forsimpleinstallationonto switchboardDINrails.Theycanbeselectedforusewithdistributionsystems,withmaximum RMSvoltagesof275V(L-N)atfrequenciesof50/60Hz.

3.0QuickInstallationOverview

Installinthefollowingmanner: 1. ensurethatpowerisremovedfromtheareaandcircuitstobeconnected 2. snaplocktheMPFand970totheDINrail 3. installtheappropriateupstreamovercurrentprotection 4. connectwiringtotheindicatedterminals 5. testcircuitandapplypower.

4.0 Typical Installations

TheMPFshouldbeinstalleddownstream,butinthesameswitchboardasthe970SurgeArrestor. AlthoughitistechnicallypreferabletoinstalltheMPFpriortotheRCD,thisdecisionis generallybestbasedonwhichismostconvenientandsimplesttoinstall.Aspertheinstallation instructionssuppliedwiththe970SurgeArrestor,thisshouldbeinstalledbeforetheRCD. ItmaybepossiblethatforsomeinstallationstheRCDwillbeinstalledbetweentheSurge ArrestorandtheMPF.

Forconveniencetwo"PhaseIn",two"PhaseOut" andtwo"Neutral"terminalsareprovided.Onlyone ofeachoftheterminalsisrequiredtobeconnected, allowingtheinstallertoconfigure,atwill,toeithertop orbottomterminals.

5.0 Protection Concepts

To Protected Equipment

Tooptimiseeffectivenessofinstalledprotection, aconceptof"Unprotected"and"Protected"wiring shouldbefollowed. WiringfromtheincomingmainstotheMPFshould beconsidered"Unprotected"andkeptremotefrom allotherwiring(approximately300mm)where possible.WiringontheequipmentsideoftheMPF shouldbeconsidered"Protected".

ConnectionofPhaseTerminals

· Thephaseconductormustbepassedthrough theMPFviaone"PhaseIn"andone"PhaseOut" terminal.

TYPICAL INSTALLATION

Phasewirefrom970mustfeedthroughtpowerfilter, andalsohaveappropriateovercurrentprotection.

Main Switch

Theseparationof"Protected"from"Unprotected" wiringisrecommended,inordertominimisethe riskoftransientsconductedon"Unprotected" wiringcrosscouplingonto"Protected"circuits, thuscompromisingthelevelofprotectionavailable fromtheMPF.

Overcurrent protection (10 or 20A) required for Mains Power Filter. Preferably installed at (1).

6.0Mounting

ConnectionofNeutralTerminal

· A tleastoneoftheMPF"Neutral" terminalsmustbeconnectedto Neutral.Ashortdirectconnection is required. A lternatively,ifallowablebylocal regulation,theNeutraltotheprotected equipmentcanbepassedthroughthe MPF,ineither"Neutral"terminaland outtheother.Thisimprovesdevice performance. MPFsaredesignedtoclipto35mmtophatDINrails.Unlessotherwisemechanically restrained,usehorizontalDINrailswiththeMPFfixingclipstothebottom,(ie.labeltextthe correctwayup). Unitsmustbeinstalledinanenclosureorpanel, toprovidetheappropriatedegreeofelectricaland environmentalprotection. Onlyuseenclosuresthat: · donotcausetheMPFtemperaturetoexceed55°C · provideadequateelectricalandsafetyprotection · preventtheingressofmoistureandwater.

Overcurrent Protection

· A sdetailedonpage6 (9.FusingandIsolation)overcurrent protection is required to be installed upstreamoftheMPFtoensureitis notoverloaded.

7.0ConfigurationandProtectionModes

TheMPFproducts,whenconnectedwiththe970SurgeArrestor,provideaprotectionmode optimisedfortheprotectionofsensitiveelectronicequipmentinanAustralian/NewZealand MENdistributionsystem(theTN-C-Ssystem). The970SurgeArrestorInstructionsrecommendthe970beinstalledfromLinetoEarth,while theMPFprovidesthefilteringandsecondaryprotectionbetweenPhaseandNeutral.

8.0ConductorTermination

EachMPFterminalisdesignedtoacceptwiresizesfrom1.5mm to6mm solid or stranded conductor.Insulationshouldbestrippedback8mmbeforeterminatingintothetunnelterminal.

WithalowvoltageInsulationTester(<250V),insulationbetweenany"PhOut"and"N"terminal shouldbeabove10Mafteroneminute. DonotattempttoopenortamperwiththeMPFunitsinanyway,asthismaycompromise performanceandwillvoidwarranty. Donot"Megger"orperformothertypesofelectricalteststhatapplyvoltagesgreaterthanthe nominaloperatingvoltagebetweenPhaseandNeutral.TheMPFwillattempttolimitthese voltagestherebyaffectingthetestresult.Wherethesetestsmustbeperformed,firstremove theMPFfromcircuit.

Donotuseexcessiveforcewhentighteningtheterminal. Wheretwowiresmayneedtobeterminatedintooneterminal,themaximumpermissiblesize is4mm2each.

9.0FusingandIsolation

OvercurrentandshortcircuitprotectionmustbeinstalledupstreamofeveryMPF,toprovide protectiontotheunititself,theloadandthewiringincaseoffaultsituations.Thisalsoprovides ameansofisolatingtheMPF.Thisisanimportantsafetyconsiderationandisrequiredinthe eventthatanyfuturemaintenanceortestingisneeded. OvercurrentprotectionbyHRCorcircuitbreakermustbefittedintheupstreamcircuit.The ratingusedshouldbethesmallestof: · currentratingofMPF · currentratingofwiring. Overcurrentprotectioncanbeinstalledeitherbeforeorafterthe970SurgeArrestor. AustralianwiringregulationsAS/NZS3000specifiesthefollowingupstreamprotectionfortwo commonwiresizes. Cable Size 1.5mm2 2.5mm2 HRC Fuse or CB 16A 20A Rewirable Fuse 12A 16A

12.0FacilityProtection

Powerfiltersformanimportantpartofthemuchlargerlightning,surgeandtransientprotection philosophy. Protectionmayberequiredforcommunicationcircuits,equipotentialbondingandalsothe protectionofthestructureoffacilityfromdirectlightningstrikes. Thelevelofprotectionandthedegreeofattentiondedicatedtoeachofthepointswillrequire carefulconsiderationforeachsite.Thedegreeofprotectionrequiredisdeterminedbythe individualsitelocation/exposurewiththeaidofriskmanagementprinciples.

Forexample1.5mm2wireisratedtocarryupto16A,howeverifa10AMPFwereinstalledina circuitwiththiswiring,a10AovercurrentdevicemustbeinstalledupstreamtoprotecttheMPF frominadvertentoverload.If1.5mm2wirewereusedtoconnecttoa20AMPF,asthewiring isratedtoamaximumof16A,theovercurrentprotectionwouldhavetobea16AHRCfuseor CBtoprotectthewiringagainstoverload.

10.0ThreePhaseSystems

Threephasecircuitscanbeprotectedbyappropriatelyinstallingthreeseparate970/MPF combinations. DonotdisconnectupstreamEarthorNeutralconnectionssupplyingtheMPFswhile powerisstillappliedtotheMPF,asthismaydamagetheMPFand/orload.

11.0MaintenanceandTesting

Beforeremovinganyunitfromservice,ensurethatpowertothedeviceisisolated. ReplacementofanyMPFunitsshouldonlybeundertakeninaccordancewithallrelevant ElectricalandSafetyStandards,bysuitablyqualifiedpersonnel. Unitscannotbeserviced,theymustbereplaced. MPFunitsshouldbereplacedorinspectedifthe970SurgeArrestorrequiresreplacement, indicatedbytheredflaginthewindow.TheMPFshouldbe: · visuallycheckedforanydamage · resistancechecked,betweenany"PhIn"and"PhOut"terminals.Thisshouldbeless than0.5.
