r. Charles Cobb graduated from the Universit y of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), School of Dentistry in 1964. He received a Certificate of Specialty in Pe r i o d o n t o l o g y and a Master of Science degree in Microbiology, both from UMKC in 1966. Following two years of active duty with the U.S. Navy, Dr. Cobb returned to school at Georgetown University, graduating in 1971 with a PhD in Microanatomy. After graduation from Georgetown, he held teaching and research positions at Louisiana State University and the University of Alabama in Birmingham. In addition to teaching/research, Dr. Cobb recently retired from academics as Professor Emeritus at UMKC. Between academic appointments, Dr. Cobb enjoyed fifteen years of full-time private practice in the specialty of periodontics. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology, has published over 165 peer-review articles, and presented over 120 programs at regional, national, and international meetings. Lastly, Dr. Cobb retired from the U.S. Army Reserves with the rank of Colonel, and is one of the few Reservists to have received the "A" Specialty Designator from the Office of the U.S. Army Surgeon General and induction into the Order of Military Medical Merit.

"Periodontal Medicine Review and Update: 2011"

Systemic Implications of Inflammatory Periodontal Disease and Diseases of the Oral Mucosa: Selected Cases of Oral Pathology & Oral Medicine from Private Practice COURSE OUTLINE COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is primarily intended for the general dentist and dental hygienist with an interest in the role of inflammatory periodontal disease and the systemic response. The course will provide detailed information regarding the role of bacteria in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases, the host response, and the role of inflammation in various systemic diseases such as atherosclerosis, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, diabetes, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. In addition, the course will present a variety of pathology involving the oral mucous membranes, taken from private practice, and discuss their clinical characteristics, differential diagnosis, and treatment. Clinical cases will include lichen planus, pemphigoid and pemphigus, herpetic and aphthous lesions, and oral cancer. COURSE OBJECTIVES Those attending the seminar will become familiar with the: 1. Role of subgingival microbial biofilm, successional colonization, and the "Red Complex" microbes and their association with inflammation and the systemic inflammatory response; 2. Biologic plausibility for the oral-systemic link; 3. Relationship between periodontal disease and atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disease, and ischemic stroke; 4. Relationship between periodontal disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes, pre-term birth, low birth weight, fetal growth restriction, and pre-eclampsia; 5. The bi-directional relationship between the inflammatory periodontal diseases and diabetes; 6. And screening of the periodontal patient for potential systemic disease involvement. 7. Various types of oral mucosal diseases, such as: candidiasis, , aphthous stomatitis, oral herpetic diseases and herpes zoster, factitial injury, lichen planus, benign mucous membrane pemphigoid, pemphigus, leukoplakia, erythroplakia, and various types of oral cancers.
