Love Link

Dear Congregation, Another year has come and gone. They say time goes faster the older you get. I would vouch for that, but last night at supper even Sam, our 15 year old, said, "It seems like we just had Christmas, and now it's here again." We offered to let him skip it this year and wait until next year but, he wanted nothing to do with that. I don't blame him. Whether you are 15 or 55, it is hard to believe we are standing on the threshold of another year. I sincerely hope 2007 has been a happy year for you. It is my prayer that as you look back over the past twelve months you can trace god's hand in your story, leading through the joys and sorrows of the year to take steps toward becoming the person He wants you to be. Speaking of your story and god's hand in it, I want to give you a snapshot of where we are planning to go, god willing, in early 2008. January 6, the first Sunday of the new Year, we will ordain and install our newly-elected elders and deacons to their respective offices in our Consistory. I anticipate a grand kick-off to the ministry that lies ahead of us as we take a fresh look at the vision from god that must motivate and guide us. That day will lay the groundwork for the six weeks that follow. god willing, beginning January 13, we are going to experience an exciting emphasis called Life on Loan. This is going to be the time we dig into the powerful truth of how our story intersects with god's story. Did you know that you are writing a story? You write a few pages every day . . . by the choices you make . . . and the characters you meet. god is writing an even bigger story . . . a never-ending story. And your story is part of it. You and I only get one shot at this thing called life. We can live it for ourselves . . . or we can use it to serve others. We have no idea how long we will have to write our story. All that we have our loves, our talents, our resources, our opportunities is from god, and He is concerned with how we will use these to extend His grace to others. god has loaned us the lives we have. His expectation is that we would understand that fact and dedicate our lives to becoming an integral part of His timeless story. I am excited about this because it will be more than just a sermon series. Cookie and Louise, my partners in crime (that is, in god's vision for the ministry of CRC), are planning and praying about how to convey the dynamic message of Life on Loan to the children, youth, and adults of our congregation. I plan to use my final days of continuing education the week between Christmas and new Year to put the pieces together for this emphasis. Join us in praying and stay tuned for what we believe will be a great adventure to kick off 2008. One other important prayer request for you: at our December Consistory Meeting, after four months of praying, discussing, and consulting regarding our staff needs, the elders and deacons unanimously voted to use the finances committed to one Associate Pastor to hire a part-time Pastor to Senior Adults and a full-time (ordained or non-ordained) Director of Discipleship Ministries. More will be said about this in the future when we begin to solicit applications and initiate searches for both positions. In the meantime, we must all pray for god's leading!!! Thank you for a wonderful 2007. May god's mighty and loving hand lead us as individuals, as families, and as a congregation to discover and do His will in 2008. Have a Blessed new Year!
