The Boeing 777, central to Air France's strategy

On 10 April 2009, Air France receives its 54th Boeing 777. This 777th Boeing 777, delivered by the aircraft manufacturer Boeing, will be the first plane in the fleet to sport the new Air France livery, unveiled in February 2009.

1 - Air France, one of the airlines which operates the most Boeing 777s

With 54 aircraft in April 2009, Air France operates one of the biggest fleets of Boeing 777s in the world. Over half the airline's long-haul fleet is made up of Boeing 777s.

Air France operates three versions of the 777, which can be broken down as follows:

- 25 Boeing 777-200ERs seating 264 passengers in three cabins: First (4 seats), Business (49 seats) and the Voyageur cabin (211 seats).

- 20 Boeing 777-300ERs seating 325 passengers in three cabins: First (8 seats), Business (67 seats) and the Voyageur cabin (250 seats) and,

- 7 Boeing 777-300Ers (nine in June 2009), seating 472 passengers on flights between France and its French Overseas Departments, equipped with the Business cabin (14 seats), Alizé (36 seats) and Voyageur (422 seats).

- 2 Boeing 777 freighters with a maximum payload capacity of 103 tonnes, able to carry a total of 37 pallets.

The average age of the Boeing 777 (3.1 years for the -300ER and 8.7 years for the -200ER, less than a year for freighters) means that Air France has one of the youngest fleets in the world.

2. The Boeing 777 is particularly well-suited to Air France's operating requirements

Considerable autonomy

The Air France Boeing 777 can fly non-stop over 14,000 kilometres, which is more than enough to cover the airline's longest route on the network, Paris - Santiago de Chile.

35 long-haul destinations are served by the Boeing 777. Overall, the Air France network, combined with that of KLM, serves 244 destinations in 104 countries (summer 2009). The network is well-balanced, which means that there is no economic dependence on any one geographic area. Air France therefore has a natural hedging against risks which could affect a particular market.

Substantial payload capacity

Thanks to its powerful GE 90-115B engines, the Boeing 777 can even cover very long distances, carrying heavy payloads.

The maximum payload for the Air France 777-300ER is around 57 tonnes (passengers and freight), and 40 tonnes for the 200ER. There is enough capacity in the forward hold for 16 pallets or 24 containers, while the rear hold has space for 20 containers. The Boeing 777-300ER can carry 23 tonnes of freight. In addition, the 17 cubic metre bulk hold can accommodate last-minute parcels and baggage.

Starting in autumn 2009, Air France will gradually phase in the new Premium Voyageur cabin on its long-haul international flights operated with the Boeing 777 and Airbus A330s and A340s.

Over equivalent distances, the Boeing 777 freighter is capable of carrying the same type of freight as the Boeing 747. Fitted out with a deck able to accommodate 3-metre pallets and a large side door, the Boeing 777 freighter has a maximum payload of 103 tonnes and can carry a total of 37 pallets. Thanks to its exceptional performance, the Boeing 777 freighter boasts the best operating costs per ATK (available tonne-km) and the best stage costs on the market, which boosts Air France's competitiveness.

Exceptional environmental performance

Boasting the latest technological developments and powered by the latest-generation engines, the Boeing 777 freighter posts the best energy and environmental performance of its category. It burns 18% less fuel than the Boeing 747, which translates into an identical reduction in CO2 emissions. Its second-generation GE90-110 engines

also comply with the most stringent regulatory constraints in terms of noise.

Economies of scale with the Boeing 777 -200, -300ER and freighter

The Boeing 777-200, -300ER and freighter are built to identical standards. By operating 54 of these aircraft, Air France is benefiting from economies of scale. The Boeing 777 passenger and freighter aircraft can, for example, be piloted by the same crew, and for the most part use the same spare parts.

3. The new Air France logo, now a global brand with a French identity

Designed by the Brandimage agency, the new logo is now just one word, reflecting Air France's ambition, now that more than half of its customers live outside France, to become a global brand.

The national colours remain present on the aircraft's tail fin and fuselage: · navy blue, predominant for 75 years, evokes the brand's historical capital and the airline's efficiency, · white, the colour of excellence, suggests well-being and the French travel experience, · the bright red accent, punctuates and energizes the brand, underlining both French chic and the attention paid to Air France customers by the airline's staff, both on the ground and on board. In order to minimize costs, the change of aircraft livery will be phased in gradually. The logo will be renewed in line with the deliveries of new aircraft and according to when they are due for repainting during maintenance operations.
