Message from the IWA president

The global water industry faces many challenges such as climate change, attaining ever more stringent wastewater discharge limits, the provision of adequate sanitation and safe drinking water and workforce capacity...to name a few. The International Water Association recognises the important role that the next generation of water industry professionals will play in meeting these global challenges. In the not too distant past the water profession was regarded a sound but often unexciting career. How that has changed! Now societies recognise the critical and central role of water in human and ecological well being. The water world uses techniques and technologies ranging from biotechnology to advanced computing and new materials many of which are the domain of the younger generations. All of this is being accompanied by huge investment in water systems to meet sustainability goals and by the internationalization of water companies How wonderful it must be to be young and in this field! I warmly welcome your participation in this conference and look forward to meeting you in Berkeley.

About The IWA Young Water Professionals Programme

Since its inception in 2001, the IWA Young Water Professionals Programme has continued to develop as the premier global network for young professionals working in all facets of the international water industry. With four key working areas; connecting people, career development, sector support and programme development, the YWP program aims to inspire, connect and nurture the next generation of young water professionals. During the next twelve months we will showcase a number of initiatives including a pilot mentoring programme, a web-based resource for career opportunities and development, as well as a working area for YWPs in developing countries. When added to existing initiatives including the YWP and Programme Development Awards there has never been a more exciting time to be a young water professional studying or working in the international water industry.
