ickens describes the holidays as "a good time a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time the only time like it in the long calendar of the year."

The River Theater's adaptation of "A Christmas Carol," Charles Dickens' masterpiece, directed by Edward James, brings to life all the well-known elements of this short story about Ebenezer Scrooge and the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future.

You'll rediscover the simple magic that theater can bring, as well as your holiday spirit, in the River Theater's staging of this Dickens classic. The vivid and realistic characters come to life in the imagination of a boy reading the book for the

very first time. Viewers experience the familiar tale of greed, redemption and the true spirit of giving. The costumes, designed by Susi Brown, are very well done and put you in the proper time frame in history. Jeffrey Reynolds, "The Fiddler," provides musical flair for the entire performance and he and the cast appear in the theater's lobby to greet theatergoers at the end of the performance. In the opening scene, Jonathan (played by Tevan Goldberg) stomps in to do his homework. As he reads "A Christmas Carol," the characters come to life. From that point on, the characters tell the story. Scrooge (played by Jim Dott) is in his "counting house" on a Friday night. As people pass by and wish him "Merry

(played by Ken Dickerson), who makes 15 shillings a week, on which he supports a wife and family, is caustically asked if he intends to take the "whole day off" on Christmas. And as well-wishing people (Solicitor Mrs. Fezziwig, played by Susana Gladwin) ask Scrooge Continued on Page 3B

Butterfield Cottage, a historic property owned by the Seaside Historical Society, transforms into a delectable gingerbread house for the holidays as it hosts the society's annual Gingerbread Tea.

The Seaside Museum and Historical Society has laid a place for visitors to enjoy gingerbread spiced with a little history at its annual Gingerbread Tea, taking place from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday afternoons through Dec. 15.

t's starting to feel a lot like Christmas at Butterfield Cottage in Seaside, with antiques and decorations galore.

Visitors to the historic home will enjoy a variety of teas, homemade gingerbread and classical holiday music all served up in a festive Victorian environment.

It's a 17-year tradition that has become popular with people wanting to relax for a while and take a break. As you enter the cottage, volunteer Diana Schafer greets visitors and takes the money for the event. Next to her desk is the quilt that will be raffled off at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15. Each table at the Saturday teas bears a gingerbread house, each one unique, which will be auctioned off at the same time as the quilt raffle. A Seth Thomas clock with a wreath around it sits on the wall above the tables. It was carried to the coast on the Oregon Trail. The clock still works but the chime was disconnected when it interrupted the museum's board meetings every 15 minutes. The cozy kitchen downstairs adds warmth and atmosphere as people gather in the main room to enjoy the traditional tea and gingerbread treats. About 2:30 p.m. the first Saturday of the season, Kirkham's cell phone rang. His wife, Peggy, also a docent, informed him that because of the large crowd, they were running out of gingerbread! Volunteer baker Edyth Schwartz quickly mixed up another batch and it was there in less than 45 minutes, freshly baked and still warm. Other volunteers rushed around providing guests with hot tea and hot chocolate. For that first tea, Mark Mathre played the harp. The calming sounds greeted visitors as they were served their tea. Jeffrey Reynolds will play the violin during the December events. While you get into the holiday spirit, Butterfield Cottage has a lot of history to offer as well. The cottage was Seaside's first seashore resort. It became a major tourist attraction of the Pacific Northwest by 1888. Horace Seely Butterfield, a prominent Portland jeweler, built the cottage in 1893 as a pleasant place to get away in the summer. It was originally located at 21 N. Columbia St., across from today's Norma's Ocean Diner. Its original home site was built and located so close to the ocean in the early days that seawater sloshed up to the attic windows at times, according to museum docent Roy Kirkham. The Butterfields' daughter, Genevieve, had her bedroom in the attic. Kirkham also points out that in the early 1900s, Butterfield was somewhat of a visionary, as he was one of the first to build vaca-

tion homes near the Prom. The historic cottage was given to the Seaside Museum and Historical Society Dec. 5, 1984, and it was moved to its present location at 570 Necanicum Drive. Today, it has been interpretively restored to be used as a museum depicting a beach cottage and rooming house of 1912. Although the house was moved completely empty, with renovations, additions, wallpaper and period furniture, it has been restored to reflect some of its original history. The very low ceilings are made of beadboard, and there is a children's room, a lady's bedroom complete with bridal gown and a gentleman's bedroom upstairs, each with appropriate decorations. As a docent who tells people the stories and history of the house, Kirkham often has children visit. When he points out the sary, is still on view, and continues through Dec. 31. RiverSea Gallery is located at 1160 Commercial St. For more information, call (503) 325-1270. During Astoria's Second Saturday Art Walk, Shanahan Gallery will feature artwork created by local artists and priced affordably for display during the holiday season. The gallery will hold a reception from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8. Kathy Moberg, well-known for her beautiful pastel work, will participate by providing holidaythemed work pastels. Shawn O'malley will put the pencils to work and create O'malley-esque holiday-themed drawings, and Roy Western will show photographic winter landscapes and other images of the Oregon Coast. Also featured, Vicki Moore of Yakima, Wash., has collected hundreds of Mr. and Mrs. Claus figures and is now making a portion of them available for display and sale to the public. Shanahan Gallery

`A Christmas Carol'

Continued from Page 1B to make a contribution to the poor and destitute, he responds: "I will give nothing. I wish to be left alone. I cannot afford to make idle people merry." As Scrooge sleeps at his home, he is visited by Jacob Marley, his dead partner (played by Bob Goldberg), the ghost of Christmas Past. Scrooge then revisits his own past and the enthusiastic cast and fiddler accompany him, dramatically showing him it's not too late to change his ways. At one point, there is a dance scene, with couples do-si-do-ing and the fiddler merrily playing away. The audience responded with loud applause. Again Scrooge sinks into a deep sleep, only to be awakened by a laughing and chuckling "Ghost of Christmas Present" (Alex Batchelder). They, of course, visit the Cratchit household, where there is no Christmas dinner, and their son, Tim, is pronounced ill. It is up to Scrooge to change his future and that, of course, is the moral of the whole story. Playing at the River Theater through Dec. 16, make it a point to see this welldone holiday play.

hree holiday home tours in the region are inviting visitors to admire their creations.

Decorations range from "beyond belief" to "I don't go nuts," as one innkeeper says, to whatever the guests decide: Boreas Inn in Long Beach, Wash., invites guests of the inn to decorate the entire house however they choose.

As varied as the decorations are the homes and inns on display. After visiting an 1896 Queen Anne Victorian in Astoria's Uniontown and a brand new 5,000square-foot residence in Ilwaco, Wash., it will be hard to come home to the meager string of lights in the window and the lonely candle on the table. But maybe the decorators will inspire the rest of us to try a little harder. Who are they? There are only three ways to find out: 1. Silence won't solve any problems

Dear Annie: My daughter and her husband recently separated. My daughter said simply that she wanted to "find herself," which seemed totally out of character. My husband and I were hard on her, telling her she should make more of an effort to work things out. She suffered in silence for months until she finally broke down and confessed that her husband has been abusing steroids. She hoped he'd stop if she walked out, but he can't see that he has a problem. She stills loves him but said she can never trust him again. We live in a small town, and my son-in-law's family and everyone else thinks my daughter is terrible for leaving. She doesn't want anyone to know the real reason because she doesn't want people to think ill of him. It's been tough because his mother has been very mean, but my daughter refuses to let me tell his family the truth. Please warn people of the signs of steroid abuse. My daughter became suspicious when her husband got very moody and had no interest in sex. -- Sad Mom Dear Sad Mom: Many athletes use steroids in an attempt to gain strength and look more physically developed. However, there are serious side effects to steroid

abuse, and silence may not be the best way to help your son-in-law. You don't have to broadcast the details, but please encourage your daughter to talk to his parents and enlist their help. Surely they want what's best for their son. Here are some facts from the National Institutes of Health (nida.nih.gov/ Infofacts/Steroids.html): The major side effects from abusing anabolic steroids can include liver tumors and cancer, jaundice, fluid retention and high blood pressure. Other side effects include kidney tumors, severe acne and trembling. In addition, men can suffer from shrinking of the testicles, reduced sperm count, infertility, baldness and development of breasts. Women can develop increased facial hair, male-pattern baldness, changes in or cessation of the menstrual cycle and a deepened voice. People who inject anabolic steroids run the added risk of con-

tracting or transmitting HIV/AIDS or hepatitis. Scientific research also shows that aggression and other psychiatric side effects may result from abuse of anabolic steroids. Researchers report that extreme mood swings also can occur, including manic-like symptoms leading to violence. Depression often is seen when the drugs are stopped and may contribute to dependence. Researchers report also that users may suffer from paranoid jealousy, extreme irritability, delusions and impaired judgment stemming from feelings of invincibility. Dear Annie: I am a senior widower and have been wearing my wedding band on my right hand. I always thought this was proper, but I recently heard otherwise. Annie, I was married to my love for 43 years and want to remember her by wearing my ring. Am I correct in wearing it on my right hand? I really don't want to take it off. -- Need Guidance in Los Angeles Dear L.A.: Those who continue to wear their wedding rings on their left hands give the impression that they are still married. But you may wear your ring wherever you like. There are no rules.

Tomorrow's horoscope

As Mars continues retrograding through Cancer, going after what we want is neither straight nor direct just like the zigzag sidesteps of the vulnerable crab. What if we're not taken seriously? What if we don't get what we aim for? Saturn offers solid guidance, sharpening our ability to clearly identify self-created obstacles. SATURDAY'S BIRTHDAY (Dec. 8): Many people have ideas, but this year, you act on them and turn your flashes of inspiration into gold. An emotional growth spurt changes your lifestyle over the next seven weeks. May features an inheritance. Put it in the bank! A June career change is followed by a romantic change. Libra and Taurus adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 5, 23, 26, 31, 11. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Take a strong stance. Subtle moves will only be lost in the shuffle. You will be asked what you think. Seize the opportunity to arrest everyone's attention when it's your turn. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Your sacrifices are worthwhile. But part of the idea of sacrifice is that you do it without really knowing what the result will be. Giving without an expectation of return is divine. GEMINI (May 21-June 21): Some groups teach one another to be judgmental, and there's no shortage of scapegoats. Resolve to be different and go against ingrained tendencies. As the Irish say, "He who gossips with you, gossips of you." CANCER (June 22-July 22): Time to re-think the living situation. Roommate you can't stand? Kick `em to the curb. House too small? Find something more accommodating. Options are numerous. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): A recent change has people looking at you in a different way. And different is good. Others are generally more receptive to your ideas and are likely to seek your guidance. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Love releases life, gives it breathing room and a dance floor. Find reasons to love, even though there have been disappointments and downfalls along the way. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23): You are grateful for the hills and valleys you've had to forge through. After all, a person who hasn't faced calamity has no need

to be brave. Your wisdom helps an Aries. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21): It's not like you to be passive, and now you may be the only one standing up for what's right. Tonight, a partner is less needy. Paradoxically, you're more willing to give. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Your productivity ebbs and flows. Give that tedious task a more fascinating name, and you'll be able to attack it in the spirit of fun. Aquarius and Leo help you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The big lessons of the day are patience and perseverance. Of course you'd rather be learning lessons like how to spend all the money that seems to fall down from the sky wherever you walk. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Your voicemail is littered with messages of support, all of which will be a pleasure to return. It strikes you that kindness is a powerful, beautiful, inspiring force. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Since you are a bit unsure of your rights and the legality of a situation is still a bit foggy, put off signing anything. Tonight, you are as open and receptive as a sponge.
